SETTING INFORMATION

Base Name: Network Access
Classification: Communications Hub
Location: Nar Shaddaahttp://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Nar_Shaddaa/Legends
Affiliation: The Collective

Population: As the hub of HoloNet communication on both the Smuggler’s Moon and in Hutt Space at large, the Network Access requires hundreds of personnel to maintain and secure this vital location. As it stands there are roughly 350 security personnel, 125 network technicians, 50 custodians, and 30 operatives. All of these individuals are supported by numerous automated systems for both logistical and defensive means; allowing them to efficiently operate and defend the Network Access.

Accessibility: The Network Access operates countless data transactions and requires advanced security protocols to ensure it is not compromised. For this purpose, the Network Access was constructed within a district dedicated solely to its needs. Moving in and out of the Network Access would first require infiltrators to bypass heavy security and surveillance systems. Even if this did happen, numerous firewalls present a state-of-the-art challenge to slicers attempting to access any of the vital hub’s information. This makes the Network Access one of the most difficult places to access on the whole of Nar Shaddaa.

Description: Constructed long ago to serve as a communications hub across Hutt Space, the Network Access has cemented itself as one of the most vital locations on the Smuggler’s Moon. For thousands of years it has exchanged hands between numerous cartels, organizations, and governments. It is no secret that whoever controls the Network Access also controls the flow of information throughout the moon and Hutt Space. There are numerous areas within the Access, each one dedicated to various operations.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Network Data Centers

The network’s data centers are located in several secured alleyways throughout the Access. Each one contains countless servers, computers, and databanks. There are many failsafes in place should any of the centers be compromised. Each data center has its own backup power generator, and the gateways to each alley are shielded to prevent both matter and energy from passing through. Network technicians are often seen moving up and down these alleys to inspect the health of each tower, and ensure that none of them have been compromised.

Collective Core

The Collective core was constructed around the primary access point and serves as the heart of the Collective’s private network. It is in fact the central computer where the Collective’s A.I. mastermind is contained, free to access the billions of transactions that pass through the network. Only a select few individuals are ever allowed to approach the core, with those who aren’t subjected to lethal force if they do.

Security Base

All security personnel are permanent residents of the Network Access, and their home is an extensive inner base built into one of the Access alleyways. Inside the base is a security control room, several barracks, an armoury, training facilities, the mess hall, and recreation facilities. The base itself is guarded by the same defenses as the rest of the area, and contains emergency backup servers deep within on a closed network should the primary network ever be compromised.

DEFENSES

The Network Access is protected by numerous defensive systems, each one working in cooperation with the other to ensure the area is secured against brute force attacks, infiltrators, and remote slicing operations. Autoturretshttp://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Autoturret/Legends with both lethal and stun functions dot the various entrances and accesses throughout the area, with security surveillance systems allowing visual and audio feedback as well.

The security personnel stand watch in critical subsections, with several five man patrols set along timed routes which change frequently to prevent predictability. The personnel themselves are armed with blaster rifles, pistols, and wear personal defense armour. They are by no means soldiers, but with the support of automated defense they are able to hold their ground against nearly any assault the various crime organizations might send their way. Each guard is also given extensive training and conditioning, with regular evaluations to ensure their state of mind and loyalties aren’t compromised.

In addition to the guard force are the operatives; each handpicked to serve as the backbone of the security forces. They serve as the Access’ overseers, and in the event of remote attacks can conduct counter-slicing operations too. Because they serve the Collective directly, they are often privy to knowledge that the other personnel are not and coordinate directly with the A.I., granting them an informational advantage that no outsiders could possibility be aware of.

Lastly, there is a grid of passive defenses in the form of ray shieldshttp://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ray_shield/Legends, advanced firewalls, and encryptions. The floors of the Collective Core are constructed with shock-filaments, and when active can stun anyone without proper protection who might attempt to walk through the area.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

No one knows precisely when the Network Access was constructed, but it is to believed that the Hutts were the ones to order its creation. For thousands of years since it has served as the central HoloNet hub throughout Hutt Space. During this time many organizations have wrestled for control of the Access, and wealthy individuals were known to hire slicers in order to secure or scrub snippets of information passing through the network. At one point during the Cold War, both the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire attempted to secure the network for their own uses. With the latter once having secured its own data center.

When Nar Shaddaa finally found itself under Republic rule, and a legitimate government was put into place, many had forgotten the vital hub even existed in the first place. With gangs on the run and criminal enterprises scaled back, there were more pressing concerns than trying to secure a sector’s HoloNet hub. Then during the 400 years darkness the hub went offline all together as the Smuggler’s Moon was thrown into chaos. It wasn’t until afterwards that the Network Access was reconstructed and brought online once more. Several—mostly unimportant—organizations managed to control the Access for some time until recently.

Now the Collective controls the Network Access, and with it they have a key advantage to observing and even puppeteering criminal organizations throughout Nar Shaddaa; as well as a base from which their secretive A.I. can operate.
