Primary Thread Goal: Develop and Test Vulcan Mass-Driver
Secondary Thread Goal: Provide a supply of Stygium Crystals to contributing writers

Mandal Hypernautics was a company that never slept. Engineers worked tirelessly to crank out new ideas. Most of the time, all this resulted in for Rygel Larraq was a piece of paper that he needed to sign. But every now and then his engineers cooked up something that required a little bit more from him. Now was one of those times... Prototype V001-A01A was ready.

Rygel Larraq's shuttle arrived in the asteroid field surrounding Aeten II a day after receiving notification. His destination was the A2-Alpha station. His company had set up a small facility on one of the larger asteroids in the area in hopes of scouting out a source of Stygium Crystals. But when several weeks turned into several months with no results, Larraq made the decision to scale down the asteroid scanning operations and re-purpose parts of the facility.

This wasn't a place that someone would expect to find a weapons research lab. And it Larraq's eyes, that made it perfect. He had even made sure to arrive in a Shantual-class Cargo Shuttle to help hide the activities of the base from prying eyes.

As the shuttle landed and Larraq stepped out of the forward cargo door, Larraq waited no time with formalities on the few scientists and engineers that milled about in their white lab coats. They had been waiting to greet him. Larraq made it obvious that he would have rather they stayed in their labs and continued their research.

"So. Show me what you've got." Was all he said as he stepped from the shuttle and motioned towards the rear cargo elevator.

Let it never be said that Marie wasn't an idealist. Taking a break from kidnapping children and turning them into pyro soldiers Marie decided to help out the mandalorians with their new project. It was a beauty of a cannon and marie was almost jealous that she had not thought about it first. Standing in the elevator with the good captain, Marie smiled her old wrinkled face lighting up with joy for the project that was to come. She had not been briefed yet on the specifics of the cannon but as one of the head developers in the galactic empire she would do her best to help this man on achieving his weapon system. "Mr.Larraq, I'm Doctor Krasnican founder of Project Pantheon." she said introducing herself to the rather scary looking mando.

What Marie was capable of doing could chill the man to his bones, it would be best if she kept her other projects to herself. Kidnapping children and torturing them really wasn't a good headline for the empire but she would make due with this one for now. "I have only one thing that I want from you. A dozen of your Co2 knives." she asked the man nicely. She needed them for certain things in her research and they would prove to be rather helpful for the future. Getting back to the project marie awaited to see what the mando scientist could come up with. @[member="Captain Larraq"]

Basaba was here for one purpose... well two. She wasn't going to let one of the clansmen and person who makes her toys to stab people with get hurt. That they were testing out weapons only made this more enjoyable. She loved the feeling of holding the blade as it pierced the flesh, that look in the eyes of the people when she twisted the knife. It was glorious to say the least and that is why she stood here now as more a guard until it came time to stab or shoot things. The wrist blade retracted so the knives just tapped her hand, her combat knives over and the rest o her armor covered in some small flare. The crossing spears presenting more a sign of distinguishment while the energy shield on her arm was ready to spring to life in a moment notice. All the enjoyable signs of a fighter and not the captain. He could think and point... she'd obliterate it until it was gone.

Stepping into the elevator with @Dr.Marie Krasnican, @[member="Basaba Willamina"], and the rest of the group, Rygel Larraq pressed one of the many buttons on the control panel. A thick, clear, void-proof door sealed the occupants together as a sudden increase in air pressure caused ears to pop. As the elevator began its decent into the asteroid, Rygel Larraq turned to the older woman that had spoken to him. He had heard rumors that her work within the Galactic Empire was groundbreaking, though he had yet to discover the full extent of her forte. One of the many reasons he had offered to pay the ludicrous fee for her services was to get a better idea of what she was capable of. And by extension, what the Galactic Empire was capable of.

"I believe that can be arranged." He said to the scientist. "I've brought you here because I heard that you've been involved in some groundbreaking research with the Empire. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can bring to the table here."

"Ground Breaking doesn't begin to describe Mr.Larraq." The old woman laughed a bit thinking about her children, they were the next step for humanity. If every soldier were trained and augmented as they were there would be no more war, there would only be peace amongst the stars. "My children and I have always been fans of your work. I very much believe by us working together we can achieve what you have set out here to do." By children Marie of course meant kidnapped and tortured test subjects who have no memory of the outside world and lack utter humanity. And by work together she meant help develop this mans weapon so she gets what she wants. Just another end to some means.

Marie was in no way a good sweet old lady, she was here for her personal goals. "Anyway, let's get started." she said with a smile on herself. She really wanted to get this project over with so she could move forward in her own work. @[member="Captain Larraq"] @Basaba Willamaina

Basaba remained still while the two of them spoke, the idea of handing weapons over to a woman who didn't seem able to use them raised an eyebrow. Her hand coming up to her shoulder while she took out the knife in question. Her glare more on the woman now while she flipped it so the blade was in her hand before handing it to Larraq. "If it gets some new stuff for beating the sith, just make sure she doesn't hurt herself with it." Her voice came out more with modulation and a grin while imagining the doctor fumbling to hold the knife.

"I would hope so." Larraq said as the lift came to a stop. Doors opened and pressure normalized, as the small cluster of techs and engineers scurried out and joined their waiting companions. Larraq motioned for the good doctor and walked beside her as they entered the laboratory. On the far side of the room, past a throng of technicians and machinery and on the other side of starship grade glass, was the prototype. Massive did not do the machine justice. It was enormous. The data on the weapon clocked it in at a hundred and fifty tons.

Cables and sensors sprouted from the weapon in a dozen places. A massive tube of metal connected the rear of the weapon to the floor where it's ammo was housed in a separate and reinforced behind multiple layers of duracrete and durasteel. Massive shock absorbers lined the walls of the testing area. It was quite the sight. Hoping that his investments in the project had been well spent, Larraq asked the engineers the only question that mattered. "Is it ready for testing?"

Basaba looked at the pair and moved with the captain while he talked to the doctor, more then enough time had went by and she was looking forward to trying out the weapons as it all progressed. If only because they were going to shoot things and shooting things was a great way to release stress after fighting all day.

"The device is ready. But we still have a few final preparations to make before the weapon can be fired." Answered a small, nerdy woman with large glasses. Larraq simply nodded in response and stared at the device through the reinforced glass. As he watched, a deflector shield came online over the far side of the glass. The deflector shield covered the three sides of the testing chamber that faced the lab. On the fourth side of the room, a ray shield came online moments before a massive bulkhead door split and slid sideways into either side. What lay beyond the open doors was a long shaft that cut through the asteroid and opened to the darkness of space several hundred meters from the ray shield.

"The weapon is set up to fire through the tunnel and come out in the center of a crater on the surface of the asteroid." Explained one of the nearby engineers. "It helps keep us hidden should anyone out there happen to catch a glimpse of the test-firing."

"Sounds like you have everything figured out." Said Larraq as a loud hum steadily increased in octave. It was quickly becoming something that was felt more than heard. And it was the unmistakable signal that the weapon was powering up and preparing to fire. One of the nearby technicians nodded towards a consul and spoke to Larraq. "Hopefully that's what we'll find out now, sir. The weapon is ready to fire. Just use those controls to aim at a target and fire down the corridor. Standard Heavy Mass-Driver rounds have been loaded into the weapon. We won't get to see a lot of the dispersal that we'd expect from Flak rounds, but we should see some nice impact damage if your gunner can hit her mark."

Smirking slightly, Larraq looked over his shoulder at @[member="Basaba Willamina"]. "So what do you think Besaba? Can you make this thing hit a rock?"

Basaba looked at Larraq for a moment and raised an eye under her helmet. Was he challenging her to hit a rock? h she popped her neck and went over to the guns controls as she had a grin on her face. She moved for the controls working to find a target and turned her head to the nerdy one in glasses before firing off several shots. The smile remained on her face as the sight of it firing down the tunnel and going into space. If this is why she was here then more power to it but they had to have more to it. Surely something needed to be repaired and worked on as well.

Standing next to the captain she watched as everything was going down, Marie usually stuck to genetic modifications, weapons and arnor. But what the mandos had going on here was pretty badass to say the least. However there were a few things that she needed to take up and ask the people here on this device. Things like what did if run on or if the device had a risk of nuclear and radioactive particles when fired. "Mr.Larraq, does this weapon system use any form of radiation?" she asked the man next to him outloud in case he didn't know some of these egg heads could answer her question. There were a lot of details that needed to be filled in the testing of this weapon. How many times could it be fired before overheating, rounds per minute, Range, there were a lot of things that needed to be tested on this cannon.

Larraq's heart plumeted as he watched the slow volume of bullets travel from the weapon and down the tunnel. Something was wrong. This was definitely not what he had invested millions of credits into. "What's wrong, why isn't it firing at full capacity?" Demanded Larraq of the technicians.

After a moment of panicking, one of the engineers responded. "The safety limiter is still online. If she flips the switch and holds down the left trigger, the weapon's rotation will speed up. Once the green light on the control panel starts flashing, it's safe to start firing."

"Ok @[member="Basaba Willamina"], you heard the woman. Make this thing purr, then hold the trigger down till I tell you to stop." Larraq said with a slight smile as he nodded at the Mando'ad.

The small woman in glasses looked to the fellow scientist and tried to answer the questions she had. "Theoretically, it should be able to handle anywhere from the 400 to 800 round per minute range. But until we actually fire the weapon, we won't know its true limitations." Larraq glanced over the clipboard he had been provided and tried to review the details of the doctor's other question. The issue of radiation was actually a fairly important detail. The specs he had approved made no mention of radiation when he had signed them, but such things were often glossed over by ambitious scientists. "I'm pretty sure there's no radiation... On the whole, it should just be an overcomplicated Mass-Driver. It's designed to draw power from an external source... like a ship of a city's power grid, right?" Larraq said to @[member="Dr.Marie Krasnican"]

"That's correct, sir." Said the small woman as she looked from her employer to the doctor by his side. "There is no radiation emitted from the devise itself. And the projectiles are standard Mass-Driver round scaled up for use with the weapon."

Basaba Willamina

Basaba looked at the man when he gave the word and for a moment was genuinely happy. There was nothing more important or fun then shooting but asteroids were one thing and what she really wanted right now was an enemy ship or an enemy. That would be something to see it they targeted and got to hit a floating sith out there in a suit. Or frozen sith whichever came first really. Her hands held on the firing controls so the gun could spin up and let loose. Not going away until Larraq asked her to stop.

In the other room, the Machine began to scream as it whirled in place. A subtle vibration could be felt through the floor of the facility as the gun's three triple barrels rotated in place. A small click was heard in the corner of the room as Basaba activated the firing mechanism on the weapon. In the instant that followed, a mighty and deafening roar drowned out all other noise as what looked like a solid line of golden light erupted from the mouth of the weapon and tore into space.

Larraq was nearly knocked from his feet by the vibrations that tore through the floor of the facility. The only thing that kept him standing was the metal railing to his left that he clung to. Fumbling slightly, Larraq looked down at the clipboard in his other hand. The weapon looked like it was firing a nothing but tracer rounds. As he read the information on the clipboard, Larraq's stomach plummeted and his jaw went slack. Only one in twenty bullets were tracer rounds.

A crack spread from floor to ceiling on the wall to his left as the building continued to vibrate violently. Someone was screaming. Several people were screaming. Red lights were flashing on the display screens in front of Larraq. He understood the problem. Basaba could not see the warning lights from the weapon control station. But the weapon was so loud... Even through Deflector Shielding, blast screens, and starship grade glass, the roar of the weapon drowned out all other noise.

In a sudden and violent burst of energy and noise, the room went dark and Larraq saw the ceiling rush towards his feet. He was only vaguely aware of something hitting his head before nothingness overcame him.

Someone was standing over him... shaking him... asking if he was ok... his head hurt... the ringing.... something was ringing... his ears were ringing.

“I'm... I'm fine. What happened?”

“The weapon overloaded. Your gunner tried to override the rotation inhibitor.”

Marie was pretty much partially deaf so the sounds of the machine roaring didn't really do too much for her. However she did manage to analyze the machine and even see what it was capable of while the captain was fumbling around like a drunken fool on Fat Tuesday. There were a few things that needed to be addressed clearly. The machine could not be fired at a cyclic rate in its current state. That would be bad and the weapon would end up tearing the ship it was on apart.

Walking over the waking body of the captain Marie looked down and smiled. "You need better staff." she said to him as she reached down to offer a hand to try and help him up. It was more of a sign of friendliness and respect seeing how she was a frail old lady who had got lucky and was not hit by the falling ceiling. @[member="Captain Larraq"]

"I agree. And a weapons officer that is less fond of weapons." Larraq said after a moment of trying to piece together what the good doctor was saying through the ringing in his ears. As he took the offered hand and slowly got to his feet, Larraq took in the state of the room. Sparks still spouted from various bits of equipment in the room. A broken pipe leaked some foul-smelling steam from overhead, and the blast-window was cracked in numerous places. The shield that had been erected to protect the occupants of the room had failed when the prototype exploded and a meter long shard of metal had imbedded itself halfway through the glass. The bulkhead doors on the far side of the testing chamber had slammed shut as soon as the shields had failed and nothing but wreckage remained of the prototype itself.

"Is everyone alright?" Larraq asked to the room in general. Several others were struggling to their feet as he was.

((OOC: I guess I got a little to 'visual' with my description. The ceiling is fine. Larraq got knocked backwards by the force of the explosion and was 'seeing' the ceiling as he flew backwards.))

Basaba had not expected that... No when she had begun firing she had expected something akin to testing a new weapon. Some bugs but not destroying parts of a facility. When she stood up from the area and looked around checking her armor the sight of some of the people staring at her only made her glare as one of the vibro blades ejected from her knuckle plate. She walked going around the debris and making her way to Larraq spoke looking him in the face and taking the helmet off. "Who loaded the munitions in that? Also your primary target is two degree's off angle."

Larraq listened to @[member="Basaba Willamina"] shout her displeasure at the situation and critique the weapon. Off in the corner, a young engineer scribbled down a note that Larraq could only assume involved the targeting of the weapon. Looking about the room still, Larraq could not help but to feel that this disaster had been caused by something more problematic than improperly loaded ammunition. "Someone report. What happened!?"

A cluster of engineers fumbling with one of the few displays that still worked turned and glared angrily at Basaba before answering their employer. "Somehow she overrode the rotation inhibitor. Rate of fire peaked at 27 rounds a second before the prototype overloaded. The prototype wasn't meant to do half that!" The engineer cried out, obviously desperate to not be blamed for the destruction of a several thousand credit machine.

Larraq opened his mouth to chastise the both of them when a small shout from the corner of the room demanded everyone's attention. Far from amused and far from happy with the situation, Larraq turned and glared at the engineer that had interrupted him. "What?" Demanded Larraq.

"Um... Sir, you're not going to believe this." Said a meek engineer at a corner station. "I was... I was analyzing the damage done to the target asteroid. But I got an anomaly on the sensors. I cross-referenced it with out databanks... Sir... I think your gunner just found us a vein of Stygium Crystals."

Basaba looked at the man who spoke and she had an eyebrow raised. "What override?" Then she heard the crystals and a smirk was on her face at the thought for a moment before she turned back to look at Larraq and ran a hand through her short hair. "I'm not a tech person but pressing some buttons shouldn't override controls, now come on captain your one of the heroes. Lets make it better and shot people with it." A smile remained while there were thoughts about some very nice violence when it came to unleashing this on an enemy ship.
