NARA VELL
- BACKGROUND
-
Nara Vell grew up dreaming beneath the endless traffic lanes of Kuat.
From the surface, the orbital rings looked like glowing halos wrapped around the world - massive shipyards where freighters, cruisers, and warships slipped quietly into the stars every day. To most people on Kuat, they were industry. To Nara, they were possibility.
She spent her childhood haunting the edges of repair bays and loading docks while her father worked as mechanic, watching pilots come and go with dust from distant worlds still clinging to their hulls. Cargo captains told stories over cups of caf while mechanics cursed hyperdrives that refused to cooperate. Nara listened to every word.
She promised herself that one day, she would be out there too.
It didn’t take long for the dream to turn into something real. By her late teens Nara was already working in the yards, first as a mechanic’s assistant, then as a flight tech, and finally as a cargo pilot running short-haul routes between Kuat’s orbital stations. The Galactic Alliance was still the dominant power then, and civilian shipping moved constantly through the Core. Freight contracts were plentiful, and a skilled pilot could make a living just keeping goods moving.
Nara was good at it.
She knew engines the way some people knew languages. She could hear when a hyperdrive was out of alignment and feel when a thruster array wasn’t balanced. Before long she acquired a modest Kuat-built light freighter of her own and named it Docklight, a ship sturdy enough for cargo runs and nimble enough to slip through crowded traffic lanes.
For a while, life was simple.
She flew, she repaired her own ship and she brought credits home to help her parents and her younger siblings - a brother and two little sisters who looked at the Docklight like it was the most incredible thing in the galaxy.
Then the galaxy changed.
The fall of the Alliance came quickly.
In less than two years the balance of power across the Core collapsed. The Galactic Empire rose from the ashes of the war and tightened its grip over world after world - including Kuat. The orbital rings kept turning, but the ships leaving them were no longer just freighters, transports and protective patrol ships.
They were warships.
For Nara, the change meant adapting or losing everything.
Her family lived in the shadow of those shipyards. If Imperial authorities decided they were inconvenient, life could become very difficult very quickly. So Nara did what she had always done best - she made herself useful.
The same skills that had once made her a reliable cargo pilot for Alliance contractors now served the Empire just as well. She ferried supplies between stations, ran personnel transfers, and took whatever contracts kept the Docklight flying and the Vell family safely out of Imperial attention.
She told herself it was temporary.
Just long enough to keep everyone safe.
But every time another patrol ship thundered overhead, Nara felt the quiet weight of compromise settling heavier in her chest.
Then one night everything changed.
It was late - the kind of late where the hangars had mostly gone quiet and only a few maintenance crews remained working under floodlights. Nara was halfway through recalibrating the Docklight’s hyperdrive when someone began pounding urgently on the bay doors.
Not the knock of a customer.
The knock of someone running out of time.
When she opened the door, a small group rushed inside - civilians, frightened and exhausted. At their center stood a stalwart figure whose calm presence carried an unmistakable gravity.
A Jedi.
“We were told you’re one of the best pilots on Kuat,” the Jedi said, voice steady despite the tension in the air. “We need to leave this world immediately.”
As if summoned by the words themselves, alarms began echoing across the city.
Distant sirens wailed through the industrial skyline, patrol lights flickered on in the night sky, and Nara could hear the distant thunder of engines as Imperial security forces began mobilising.
Someone was being hunted.
Nara stepped outside the hangar and looked up toward the orbital lanes. If she helped them, the Empire would know. And if the Empire knew, her family could pay the price.
For a long moment she stood there, weighing the life she had carefully maintained against the fear written across the faces behind her.
Then she turned back toward the ship.
“Get aboard.”
The Docklight roared to life minutes later, engines blazing as Nara pushed the freighter out of the hangar and straight into the rising chaos above the city.
Imperial patrol craft were already moving.
Searchlights cut through the sky while comm traffic crackled across the system. Twice fighters attempted to vector her into inspection lanes. Once a corvette demanded immediate identification. Nara answered the same way she always did when flying got dangerous.
With instinct.
She weaved the freighter through the industrial skyline, skimmed beneath traffic corridors, and threaded the Docklight through a half-finished shipyard scaffold where sensors struggled to track anything moving that fast. The patrol fighters nearly caught her twice - but nearly wasn’t enough.
Moments later the hyperdrive engaged and the stars stretched into blue-white lines.
Silence filled the cockpit.
When Nara finally leaned back in the pilot’s chair, the Jedi standing behind her looked less like a fugitive and more like someone witnessing a miracle.
“You fly like the stars are trying to catch you,” the Jedi said quietly.
Nara shrugged.
“Outrunning trouble’s part of the job.”
It was during that quiet jump through hyperspace that the Jedi explained the truth. A small resistance network had begun forming in the shadows - Jedi and ordinary citizens working together to protect those caught in the Empire’s and other oppressive regimes’ tightening grip.
They needed ships.
More importantly, they needed pilots who could do exactly what Nara had just done.
She agreed.
Not out of heroism.
But because the choice she had made that night felt more honest than anything she had done in the years before.
Since then, the galaxy has changed again. The rise of the Sith Covenant shattered the Empire’s brief dominion, bringing another violent shift in power across the Core. For now, Kuat stands free of oppressive rule and the Vell family remains safe.
But Nara knows how quickly freedom can vanish.
Now also known by the callsign Nyx, she serves as an Extraction Master within the Jedi Underground Network’s Naval Support arm - one of the pilots who fly into hostile systems when someone needs to get out alive.
Because Nara has seen how quickly tyranny can take hold.
And she intends to make sure no one facing it ever has to wait alone for a ship that might never come.
- PERSONALITY
-
Nara carries herself with the easy confidence of someone who has spent most of her life behind a starship’s controls. She is naturally expressive with her face and hands and quick-witted, rarely missing an opportunity for a dry remark or a sarcastic quip - especially when situations grow tense. For her, humor is both a coping mechanism and a way to keep those around her grounded when missions become dangerous. If a cockpit goes quiet during a crisis, chances are she will break the silence with something irreverent over the comms.
Beneath that playful sharpness, however, lies a deeply compassionate core. Nara cares fiercely about people, particularly those who cannot protect themselves. Her work with the Jedi Underground Network is not fueled by anger, ideology, or revenge - it is driven by the simple conviction that families should not have to live in fear of oppressive regimes. Her own family remains the anchor of her life, the reason she risked everything on Kuat and the reason she continues flying dangerous extractions across the galaxy.
Despite the risks of her work, Nara is far from brooding or cynical. She is sociable by nature and makes friends easily, whether with mechanics in a hangar bay, smugglers in a backwater cantina, or Jedi operatives who find themselves unexpectedly relying on a civilian pilot. She enjoys good company, music, and the quiet satisfaction of sharing stories after a successful mission.
When the situation demands it, though, the warmth gives way to focus. In the cockpit Nara becomes calm, precise, and intensely capable - the kind of pilot who can joke one moment and then guide a freighter through a blockade the next without missing a beat.
In many ways, that balance defines her best: a pilot who laughs easily, cares deeply, and flies like the lives aboard her ship truly matter - because to her, they always do. - SKILLS

SHADOW IN THE VOID - STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
-
+Ace Pilot- Nara has spent years flying cargo routes through some of the busiest and most tightly controlled traffic corridors in the Core. Her instincts for navigation, timing, and spatial awareness allow her to thread ships through situations many pilots would consider impossible. When flying under pressure, she becomes exceptionally precise and daring.
STRENGTHS
+Mechanical Aptitude- Growing up around the shipyards of Kuat gave Nara a deep understanding of starship systems. She can perform field repairs, recalibrate engines, and keep a vessel operational even after serious damage. Her freighter Docklight runs as well as it does largely because she maintains it personally.
+Calm Under Fire- Panic rarely finds its way into Nara’s cockpit. Even when alarms are blaring and hostile patrols are closing in, she maintains a level-headed focus that allows her to make fast, effective decisions. This composure is one of the reasons the Network trusts her with high-risk extractions.
+People Person- Nara is naturally sociable and approachable. She can make friends with ease. This talent often helps her gather information, secure favors, and build relationships that prove valuable during covert operations.
+Protective Loyalty- Her greatest strength is her devotion to others, particularly her family. That loyalty extends to those she rescues and works alongside. Once someone earns her trust, she will go to extraordinary lengths to ensure they make it home alive.
-Civilian at Heart- Despite her skills, Nara is not a soldier. She has no formal military training and little appetite for direct combat. When forced into firefights or battlefield situations, she is far less comfortable than she is behind the controls of a starship.
WEAKNESSES
-Family First - Nara’s family remains the center of her world. The knowledge that they could become targets if her activities were exposed weighs heavily on her decisions. Enemies aware of this could potentially exploit that vulnerability.
-Risk Taker - Nara’s flying style borders on reckless when lives are on the line. While her instincts are usually correct, her willingness to push a ship - and herself - to the absolute limit can place her in situations where one mistake would be catastrophic.
-Too Quick With Her Mouth - Her sarcasm and humor are part of her charm, but they can also land her in trouble. She has a habit of speaking before thinking, particularly when dealing with authority figures or people she dislikes.
-Carries the Weight - Nara laughs easily, but the responsibility of pulling people out of danger is something she takes deeply to heart. Every life lost on a mission stays with her, even if she rarely shows it outwardly. Over time, that quiet emotional burden can wear on her. - ITEMS
