The Nano-Weaved Adaptive/Reactive Impact Polymer was part of a project The Orion Corporation started began to look for alternative materials that could be used to make more lightweight and strong armour systems. Out of all the materials tested, the NWRAIP proved to be the promising material. After this initial success, the science division of The Orion Corporation started to develop the substance using revolutionary Nanotechnology sciences and techniques.
Nano-Weaved Adaptive/Reactive Impact Polymer, like normal impact gel, is an adaptive/reactive gel-like substance that contracts and expands depending on the amount of kinetic energy being applied onto the gel. Objects thrust into the gel with low-velocities would not cause the gel to change in any shape or form. However, should a high-velocity object such as a slugthrower shell collide with the gel, upon impact, the gel surrounding the object's penetration point will contract and harden causing the object to either be deflected, or be caught. Once the kenetic energy is dispersed, the gel will soften.
However, what separates the this polymer from other impact gels is the high strength. The substance has been strengthened by interlaced nano-weave. This nano-weave greatly increased the strength and durability of the polymer, when exposed to high amounts of kinetic energy the material will lock up and become as hard or harder than steel.
Unfortunately, due to the high cost of this polymer, large quantities cannot be produced and therefore it is only being used on The Orion Corporation minor or unique produced items and will unlikely to appear on the open market.
Even though this Nano-Weaved Adaptive Polymer will be extremely effective at stopping kinetic projectiles, it will not be able to stop energy weapons such as blasters. During tests conducted by The Orion Corporation, it was shown that energy weapon were not stopped by the Polymer but instead the plasma easily burnt through the substance and still did damage after penetration.
