For the majority of her life, Mizar knew little more than the island the Beorni called home. It was not a place with ample space, and so prospects were largely limited; they were fishermen and simple folk, at one with their natural surroundings, prone to meditative states, a love of food, and napping in the afternoon sun. Though as cubs they were told the ancient stories of their people, orated by their elders, they could not fully grasp at what had been lost when the Valkyri had shipped them away. All they knew was their home, the ample waters filled with fish, and the glorious Spirits which ran betwixt it all.
Though all Beorni have some level of affinity toward nature, she was noted early on as being especially connected to it. She held it in true reverence, and found ways to utilize what the great Spirits provided in order to better serve her kin. Flora grown both on the surface of their island and beneath the waters which ran through and around it were harvested and brewed into elixirs, potions, and balms, to soothe and heal or even simply to reinvigorate. She could draw from them mystical properties which could be temporarily imbued within those who partook of it, helping her fellows to see better for a time, or to find their steps hastened.
Beyond that was a deep love for all the other fauna who called their island home, few and far between though they may have seemed to be. She looked beyond the usual though, the fish and the ruminants, finding a kinship with even the worms who burrowed deep into the earth, and the insects who crawled between tree trunk and bark. Anything and everything which the Spirits of the Wild could flow through became sacred within her domain, and though agriculture in general was not widely available to the Beorni she still found ways to cultivate plants amidst what little space she could find. Mycelium, too, wherever damp won out over the dryer, icy air they were most used to.
As she grew she became all the more aware of her inability to bear children of her own, though that did not keep her maternal instincts from kicking in. Mizar dedicated herself to any lost cub she happened upon, and was the first to step in should others need assistance with their young. She even raised a litter of three when their mother passed, and still regards them as her own beloved children though they are now adults in their own right.
Their seclusion and life of pacifism was not to last though, for the Beorni soon found themselves reconnected with the other Children of Midvinter, the Aelvar and the Valkyri, and therein everything Mizar thought she knew about their world was put into question. She was eager to learn more, to explore the mainland in search of new flora and fauna, and for a time she roamed. Then strife befell the Heartlands, and she like her kin was called upon in defense of their lands. While Mizar did not participate in the fighting directly, she did her part during the battle of Tháinbroek, administering her various draughts and poultices to those who required it, like a battlefield nurse.
When the dust and ash finally settled, she found herself with one less child and deeply mourned her loss. The devastation which lay over the land hung heavy on her soul, and she fell into a deep depression and sank into a meditative state of hibernation for some time. She returned a woman changed, a new lease on life and a mission fixed within her heart. She helped with the construction of Beornstead, witnessing first hand how resilient the world really was, and then made her plans known.
Mizar was not going to remain on Midvinter. Instead, she would make it her quest to visit the many worlds broken by strife, scarred and knocked out of balance, to see them restored to their natural state. She brought with her many saplings and cuttings from the plants she used most commonly, and alongside an offworlder who had come to render aid she set off into the wider Galaxy. Mizar did not remain with the offworlder for long, they had their own path to walk after all, and soon she was forced to adapt to a strange new universe far beyond the scope of anything she'd known before.
Technology was hard to grasp, as was the concept of Starships, but she remained fixed on her task all the same. And soon enough she wasn't drifting through the stars alone, anyway...
