Private Mighty Fine Shindig

Lianna | Outer Rim Corporate Authority Gala | Vyri

The soft tinkling of silverware and wine glasses were a low thrum throughout the expansive ballroom. It was a backdrop to the murmuring of voices and high pitched laughter that often punctuated various conversations occurring in the room. It was a place where movers and shakers went to be seen, an event various companies large and small tried to attend for the sheer exposure and chance to make deals out on the dance floor.

Judah adjusted his bowtie and glanced at the time. Still at least an hour and a half to go before he could make a graceful exit. Such events were a thorn in his side. One could consider them a necessary evil in the business world. For smaller companies he could completely agree. For larger ones such as his own it seemed to be less useful unless one wanted to brag, trick some small company into being absorbed, or show off the latest trophy spouse.

He had no time for any of the three options.

That left him with a fourth option : eat as much free food as possible. Judah had acquired a taste for crab puffs from his ex-wife and tended to seek out the little treats at nearly every Gala that had them. Few came close to her recipe and he was quite convinced it was due to the lack of knowledge from non-aquatic chefs, not that it couldn't be learned. Judah knew it was quite simple but many of these large city-wide planets had residents who had never seen a tree, much less an ocean.

Holding his little plate of crab puffs off to one side he was eagerly counting down the minutes to the end of his current nightmare. Only one hour and twenty minutes to go. Progress.

Dress? Stolen. Heels? Stolen. Shawl? Stolen. Blaster? Lol, stolen.

Was the food stolen if she wasn't suppose to be there? Or was the fact that it was out and unmanned meant it was free? She considered the shrimp in her hand, a brow raised to the cold dead gaze staring back at her. Most of her food came prepackaged and faceless. Odd to pay more only to have the dead eyes still attached.

She gave a vague shrug, then ate it anyway, unable to determined if it was worth the effort of such expenses. But food was food and she was never one to turn up her nose. Silver platter or trash can otherwise.

She watched the room, chewing happily, forgetting for a moment why she was even there. She slowly grew aware of the lingering presence besides her, the bodies coming and going-- yet he remained. She glanced over, raising a brow as she watched him indulge in a plate of something puffy instead of mull with the crowd. A man after her own heart.

He was given a moment, and then she spoke. "You'd think they'd offer us a full meal. It's hardly filling."

Little silver plate in front of him, Judah was only paying half-attention to the goings on around him. He was idly aware of those lingering in and out of his personal bubble and some outside noises but beyond that he was in his own world. So far his strategy was working until he heard a voice beside him, his mind taking a moment to register the voice was actually talking to him.

Head turn toward her and he blinked once or twice, emerging from his daydreaming. It appeared he had garnered the attention of a trophy wife. Idly he wondered what ungrateful bastard she had ended up married to. No doubt he would find out shortly when the man would appear, offended that someone else was talking up the latest arm candy.

"Barely considered a snack. Quite unflattering for some as they continue to eat in order to get their fill. I'm far too old to be concerned about such perceptions but for some ages and cultures...could be a problem. I imagine a number leave hungry."

Unflattering? Eating? Vryi looked down at her two fist fulls of shrimp.

"..." She brought a few to her mouth, chewing thoughtfully as they both indulged in their overindulgence. "Diet pills, maybe. Surgically enhanced stomachs." She looked his way, elaborating. "Makes them go slooo'op." She gave a vague gesture of a thinner waistline, as if the producers killed appetites and allowed the bodies before them to mull and dance without proper grub.

She dove right back into her other handful of shrimp, clearly not among that populace.

"What brings you here then, if you find it as miserable as I?" She looked over to him, a teasing grin spreading across her face.

"Hm, there is an awful lot of silicone in many of the patrons here. An abundance of diet pills coursing through the veins of the trophy wives too. Shame we won't see most of them within the next five years. More names and faces we will have to learn - not that I strain myself trying to figure out who is who."

Judah ate another crab puff, leaving just a smattering on his small plate. Idly he wondered what small bites of food he would be wolfing down next. Maybe the shrimp or some other high value food target would be worth his while. The old businessman didn't drink so getting his credits worth out of the food was his ultimate goal at this point.

"Here for business. I've been in hermitage for a number of years and thought it wise to show my face once more. Yourself?"

"Shrimp," Vryi grinned, raising her fistful in reference.

She plopped another in her mouth, not engaging him on the drawling pleasantries of 'what business do you engage in'. Nah, she went right for the meat, brisk to a fault. "A woman broke your heart?" A bit of the head, her cherry red lipstick smearing slightly to her chin. Embarrassing, no doubt. And probably why other woman didn't eat. She was blithe to this, dropping off the tail in a silver trash bucket and wiping off her hands.

"Or just too rich to care." She grabbed two delicate glasses of Champaign as they were fretted by on silver platters. On one smooth motion she offered him one and sipped her own.

"Perhaps a mix of both. When you're old and of means and have put a stamp on the galaxy so to speak a break is nice. Not that the galaxy at large missed me by any stretch of the imagination."

Judah took the offered glass of champagne and didn't miss the fact that the woman avoided his question. So not one to talk about herself? Odd, he had pegged most of the trophy wives and girlfriends in here as vapid and singleminded. He could also be mistaken, the woman could have her own company or be an assistant in one. Typically most business owners introduced themselves as such.

"Thank you." A pause, sip of the drink. "So who are you here with?"

Vryi laughed into the glass, her mirth bubbling into the liquid as she continued to scan the crowd. "What? Because I'm a woman I can't be successful on my own? Oh please. No wonder you're here alone."

She glanced over at him, mirth in her gaze that bubbled over to her lips. She smile, the tease tension dispersing.

"No one. I'm here on my own-- pathetic I know, but I heard there was," she gestured weakly at the shrimp. "These these and I had nothing better to do. Mistakes were made." She weezed, pulling at the tight straps of her red dress as if she wanted to be anywhere but there.

"Have you ever worn heels, Mr...." She let the question hang in the air.

He remained nonplussed about her prodding regarding his not believing she was here on business ventures. Judah didn't quite believe she was here completely for industrial purposes. Not many were, there was always a second motivation to come to these events. For him it was the free food. Everyone had their own reason to put up with such a boring event.

Judah was still eating, had to get his tickets worth out of this, as she spoke. Why she thought being here on her own was pathetic he didn't know. Some people were more pack animal minded he supposed.

"Heels? Yes they are incredibly hard to find in my size.I tend to make women jealous when I wear them so I try not to be seen in public with them on."

Vyri laughed abruptly at his joke, her shrimp tail catching in her throat and leading her into a series of coughs. She wiped away a tear to shoot the man appreciative look, her breathing managing to even out.

"Fair enough. You know my struggle then." Her amusement died out after a few smaller giggles, the woman's demeanor relaxing considerably as she offered her hand. "I'm Sky by the way. Sky Davenport. ...You want to get out of here, maybe find a real place to eat?" She offered, her eyes twinkling suggestively.

"Didn't mean to make you choke, sorry. That would have been embarrassing, killing someone off at this party. Typically those things happen afterwards, you know? Could have been the talk of the town though."

Hand reached out and gently squeezed hers in greeting.

"Pleasure to meet you Miss Davenport, Judah Dashiell." A slight pause as he mulled over her words. "I suppose I could eat. I mean...its not as if this was the most top tier bites I have ever eaten. If you want some boring company during a meal then perhaps we should leave and find something more palatable."
