Description:

The MH-PU04 Overdrive Engine is a multi-part component. Standard thrusters are replaced with larger, more durable variants and a durasteel framework is added to key sections of the ship to reinforce stress points. Most reactors are replaced with more powerful variants, or a secondary reactor is installed on the ship. Additional power conduits are worked into the craft between the thrusters and whichever power source the ships design utilizes.

Once installed, Captains initially feel little difference in the speed and handling of their craft. Standard sublight speeds and maneuvering are maintained despite the additional weight of the installed engines. Where Overdrive Engines and all other propulsion units differ is that only 40% of their potential is utilized during standard operations. The Captain of a ship equipped with Overdrive Engines has the option of utilizing the remaining 60% thrust potential in emergency situations or when running down a key target becomes necessary.

When fully activated, the oversized reactor floods power through the numerous power conduits connecting the reactor to the thrusters. The new power conduits function like an massive artery as power is shunted directly to the engines. Massive, structurally reinforced, and thermally insulated the MH-PU04 Overdrive Engines are capable of safely emitting massive amounts of thermal energy. This energy is harnessed by vector-enhancing manifolds that translate the thermal output of the engines into thrust for the starship they happen to be installed upon.

The increase in speed that these engines can provide a ship is incredible. In nautical terms, a ship utilizing these engines can catapult itself through space at a full sublight speed category faster than would otherwise be capable for a ship of its size. Unfortunatly, this increased speed does come at a cost. The maneuvering thrusters of a ship tend to suffer power drain while Overdrive Engines are operating at full capacity. Due to this, a starship benefitting from the speed enhancement of Overdrive Engines suffers a significant decrease in maneuverability for the duration of their activation. Even when the Overdrive Engines are brought back to standard emission levels, the decrease in maneuverability is still felt as power is routed back to the normal patterns and maneuvering thrusters struggle to reach normal functioning levels. It typically takes approximately 45 seconds for maneuvering thrusters to return to normal levels after an Overdrive Engine has been reduced to normal output levels.

Effect on Ships using 10 point speed scale

  • Temporary +1 Sublight Speed in exchange for -1 Maneuverability
  • -1 Maneuverability persists for 45 seconds after speeds return to normal
Effect on Ships using the 20 point speed scale
  • Temporary +2 Sublight Speed in exchange for -2 Maneuverability
  • -2 Maneuverability persists for 45 seconds after speeds return to normal
