  As a Jedi, Merrick's skillset leans heavily into the definition of a Sentinel, but is also an unconventional tank and protector. Rigorously trained in sense enhancements for detecting threats, investigation, and weeding out evil, among other skills, Merrick was also instructed in a high degree of tracking as per the Keetael tradition, by the Draethos Jedi Master Yalon, his long-time mentor.​

  While some of his combat training eventually came from Yalon, tradition among galactic elites (and school fencing teams) lead him to the tutelage of Urusei Aihara, an Atrisian swordplay instructor, who provided instruction in Jar'kai, a style of dual-wield swordplay developed by the Yoshvin Swordsmen of Atrisia, in addition to standard fencing instruction. This altogether provided a strong foundation, and later, accompaniment to his lightsaber training.​

  Between his schooling on Naboo, grooming as a son of the aristocracy, and other non-Force skills taught by Master Yalon and other mentors, Merrick is wise to the limitations of the Force, and the many situations that require a different, sometimes more subtle touch than a blade or the Force can provide. More recently, he has acquired other skills from his current companion, fellow Jedi Knight Chiara Viren, imparting some of his knowledge in return.​
