It was an oddly slow day at the Shadow Temple, he was scheduled to meet with an “Investigator” but the would-be instructor had never shown up. The census of students in today was low, so the big man took the time to do something he had been wanting to do but had not quite had the time to until today.

Caltin was working on his ship “Spectre”, the engines primarily. He checked the system to make sure everything was running smoothly and repaired any minor issues. He also checked the navigation system to make sure it was up to date and accurate. Finally, he tested the engine to make sure everything was working as it should.

While he wanted to be annoyed that several of the Jedi who wanted to commit to participating here and better the next generation of Jedi, it was not worth it. Not only that, it would fall back on him in some strange way in the future. Either way, the big man stopped bothering with worrying about how big and busy he could get the place, and just utilized it for what it is worth.

It was then that he felt something, familiar, very familiar. He was coming in and luckily the big man was up on the main strip of the starport.

"Hey Gramps."

Jax hadn't seen Catlin in a long time not since he fell to the Dark Side during the Second Great Hyperspace War. Admittedly part of the reason he went into self-exile was because he disappointed Calitin. He devoted all of his time and energy to help Jax fight off the temptations of Carnifex but despite the preparation, Jax fell anyway submitting to his impulses during his fight against the Carnifex. Jax tried to justify yet but saying that he was only protecting Dreidi Xeraic his stepdaughter. But it was clear that he gave in the moment he was offered power. Jax failed his family but more importantly, he failed himself. All the power in the world meant nothing if one didn't master themselves.

Now that Jax returned to the New Jedi Order, he needed to reconnect with his family again. He found Jairdain , reconnected with Dreidi Xeraic but all that was left, was the old man. His descendant. Of all of the people, facing him was like facing a Gundark with both hands tied behind his back. "So," Jax took a deep breath approaching Caltin. "Nice place you got here, figured I'd join your little group."

I hate when he calls me that…

Some may think that Jax falling to the Dark Side was the last time that the two had seen each other, but it was not. It was that castle that they were approaching, where they had come across that 4, 6, 8, however many armed purple nutcase that they had come to reunite(in a manner of speaking). It was interesting that Caltin could sense a reticence in Jax right now, it was not necessary, he had proven himself over and over again.

Sliding out from underneath the ship, tools in hand and covered in grease, Caltin stood over the Maverick and curled an eyebrow.

”Little”? Really? When have you ever known me to do anything “little”? He wasn’t serious, but it was funny to see the kid, yes, to Caltin he was still “kid” even if that day when Jax took over that purple people eater on his own he earned a verbal showing of the big man’s respect (which he already had).

Pulling a datapad to him through the Force, he punched in a couple of buttons and offered it to the Maverick. I need a few minutes to clean up, in the meantime follow this map to see something that has been waiting for you. I’ll meet you there in ten. The datapad layouts and turn by turn directions to “The Masters Quarters”, a section of the Respite Zone relegated purely to overseers and instructors.

When Jax would get there and enter the specific apartment (already notated as his), he would see:

After a few minutes, Caltin would be at the door, all cleaned up. Too big? I can make it smaller? A joke.

Same old Calitin a very ambitious but also thin skinned, not that Jax ever said that to his face. The guy loved to bury his feelings deep and he respected that, still that didn't mean that Jax could have fun poking at Gramps every now and then. He was after going to be a great Grandfather or a Great times 20 Grandfather. Jax didn't know how these family titles worked it was made even more complicated when Caltin was frozen in time.

"Oh yeah I forgot," Jax chuckled taking a look at the map. "You always loved thinking big from your muscles to the dang towers. If I didn't know any better, it sounds like you're trying to compensate for something."

He wondered what the plan was with this Jedi Shadow Temple, Jax had fought in many wars for the Alliance and truth be told, he felt like a man in his 80s than a man nearing his 40s. "I feel like I'm almost as old as Gramps," Jax thought.

Jax headed towards the room and he looked around impressed. He heard Caltin pop in and smiled. "Not bad," Jax said. "I'll need to move out from dinky apartment and make this my official base of operations. But then again Val would wonder where I am, not that I made an official return to the New Jedi Order though."

Would it be “child abuse” if I punched you right now? He thought to himself with a smirk. Luckily Jax was on some tangent about Caltin “compensating for something” at the same time so it could be misconstrued as him finding that funny. It was cute so it wasn’t far off.

A quick jog to his own apartment and a few minutes in the refresher, Caltin changed into some street clothes, some expensive street clothes, and made his way to the “old young man”. One would think that they were annoyed by the other (at least on Caltin’s end) but just the opposite. In truth, the big man was playing to his “grumpy” reputation.

”Dinky Apartment”? So that’s what they call that “refrigerator box” you called “home” for awhile… He wasn’t serious, and he didn’t know what Jax had went through in his self-imposed exile, Caltin was referring to said apartment, but he could throw out the jabs too, all in good fun.

When there was the mention of “base of operations” Caltin waggled his fingers in a fashion that could be matched with the quip “oooo”. Then he mentioned what Master Valery Noble would say. I’m sure that she’ll be fine. No one is saying you have to leave the NJO behind, right? Don’t worry though, if she does say something… blame it on me… I don’t think she likes me that much anyway. He said with a genuine laugh.

"Hey, It was a good home," Jax grinned. "If you ignore the Landlord begging you for the rent every month even though you've paid it. I think we Jedi need to scale back on the mansions and fancy Speeders and return to our roots in living the simple life."

The Jedi Master chuckled. "I haven't spoken to Valery Noble ," he said. "I haven't spoken any of the council or the Jedi Masters. Even though I came back to the Alliance, I've been living lowkey."

Jax sighed his eyes meeting Caltin." So you have a family?" Jax said. "Met your son a couple times, nice kid. What's he up to now and days?"

Well said. Caltin had money, and used it, used it on the island on Alderaan, rebuilding the Angellus state on Naboo (or attempting to at least), his business partnership and outreach programs, and most importantly here. Of course if you have it, it’s important in how you use it.

Then Jax had said something that genuinely annoyed him. He was not annoyed directly at the Maverick, but the fact that he would feel that way. He had a history of being “standoffish” and wanted to work on that more and more.

Yes, I have a “family”, Including a “grandkid”. He then gave a meaningful glance at Jax, hands on his hips.

You have a cousin too, a couple of them. An Admiral in the GADF and his son, good people. A businessman on Naboo, as well, goof guy, resourceful. As for Connel, he told me about the times he met you, knew who you were immediately, and waited tor you to introduce yourself officially. He said with another genuine laugh.

"Already running laps around me," Jax said rolling his eyes. "I leave the Core Worlds for a while and already everyone is having a family." From Dreidi Xeraic to now Connel. Though Jax wasn't in any hurry to have a family, he had to admit it was a little disheartening to see people younger than him already having kids. Jax was nearing his 40s and he's having his first kid.

"That's good to hear," Jax said leaning against the wall. "If you see Connel again give him my regards and the fact that I still need to finish teaching him the art of the Drunken Saber technique."

Not so much "technique" but rather infusing the Force with alcohol consumption. A surprisingly (or unsurprisingly depending on the opponent) potent combo especially when paired with a Lightsaber."

"So," Jax said. "What's your grand vision for this assembly of Jedi? Are we going to take on the Sith all by ourselves like in the old days?"

What the frell?

I didn’t realize that this was a competition… Caltin was now focusing on the rolling of the Maverick’s eyes… and he didn’t appreciate it. Did you misunderstand? Connel doesn’t have a family of his own… I meant the whole family, not just my kid… he has a pet… but that’s about it…

Not wanting to make a galactic case out of it and moving on, Caltin agreed to pass on regards to his son. The Shadows was busy lately with all of the assignments he was on, it was good for him, but it was also concerning because of the change it was bringing about in the younger Vanagor.

Wait… you misunderstood “grandkid”... ha! He then gave another glance at Jax, and laughed again.

I wasn’t saying Connel had a kid… I was playing off you always calling me “gramps”... I was throwing it back at you.... Doubling over and laughing even louder for a moment, he stood erect and wiped his right eye. Ohhhh I needed that, thanks… as for this place… it’s a “school” plain and simple. Not like the Temple on Coruscant or some of the others out there that are more “outposts” this is for newly Knighted Jedi who haven’t started on their chosen path yet. To help them learn what works for them and what ways to go… all three archetypes… several paths… I’m even working on unique skills and abilities… even finding a way to replicate what happened to me.

On cue, electrical energy crackled out of his eyes.
