STRENGTHS
  • Heavy Armaments - The Mars-class was designed to serve as a Defensive Platform and as such is equipped with an array of heavier armaments and ordnance than other similarly sized stations.
  • Reinforced Structure - Due to these stations serving as defense platforms, each was designed with additional defensive capabilities and measures to further its operational life and ensure that it was capable of taking a beating just as much as dishing one out.
WEAKNESSES
  • Negative Squadron Support - Each station lacks the hangar capacity to support anything other than a singular squadron of Support Craft. This means that these stations often must rely on Starfighter support from the Planet or an adjacent Space Dock.
  • Limited Mobility - The Mars-class Defense Platform was not designed to move and is incapable of accelerating to any rate of speed. Likewise, the limited maneuverability that it is capable of is often restricted to ensuring that it remains in a synchronized orbit over the planet it has been deployed to protect.
  • Limited Firing Arcs - Many of the weapon systems on these platforms are faced away from the planet to detect and fire upon incoming threats. Due to this, there is only limited weapon coverage along the aft firing arc of the station, making for an easier attack approach if an enemy vessel were capable of breaking through.
DESCRIPTION
The Mars-class Orbital Defense Platform was designed to provide area defense with concentrated firepower that was often on par with that of a Star Destroyer. Its spherical design was heavily inspired by older similar designs, namely the infamous Death Star Battlestation, though lacking the planet-cracking superlaser. With new conflicts continuing to grow, the need to provide defensive platforms to protect commercial interests as well as provide static military position resulted in the initial design that would ultimately become the well-armed and heavily defended platform. Each Mars-class is capable of withstanding a heavy salvo of enemy fire whilst remaining operational and returning a withering salvo of its own on an attacker.

However, the design of the Mars-class has a noticeable flaw that can be taken advantage of in the event that an enemy vessel or craft is capable of breaking through the defenses of the station and neighboring support systems. Each of these defense platforms is oriented so that the majority of their weaponry is facing away from the surface of the planet, meaning that there is limited weapon coverage along the aft of the platform facing the surface of the planet. Likewise, as its primary focus is on heavier armaments, these platforms are incapable of supporting anything beyond a single squadron of Support Craft or Shuttles and must rely more frequently on Starfighter support deployed from the planet or from a neighboring station.

The need to ensure that a Planet, Orbital Colony or other Space Station is well protected is one of the primary reasons for the existence of these Platforms. Rapidly and easily produced in mass quantities, these Platforms have already begun to be deployed in the Deep Core near Aether System assets prior to their eventual deployment at key locations throughout the Galactic Alliance.
