LOCATION INFORMATION
- Capital City: Haar-Dab'ika
- Planetary Features: Mostly rural or wild. The majority of settlements are isolated and under 1,000 in population.
- Major Locations:
- Haar-Dab'ika: The only large urban center on the planet serving as the main population, commercial manufacturing and transportation center.
- The Saandyr Clan Lands: The only other population center of note 10-12,000 inhabitants. Located in the Northern hemisphere. A spread-out complex acting as the political and military headquarters of the clan and the main mineral and agricultural extraction node supplying Haar-Dab'ika. There is a maglev train line between the two locations.
- The Spine Mountains: A tectonic ridge along the center of the planets mass has pushed up a series of mostly contiguous mountain ranges bisecting the planet from the north to south polar regions. The range, acting as the planet's prime meridian, is rugged and poses a substantial impediment to cross hemispheric navigation as there are few passes or gaps dividing the range. The only gap of significant size is along the equator. The name Spine Mountains, Cerar Norak'takur in Mando'a (lit. backbone Mountians), is a hypernym for various interconnected ranges making up the larger geological feature. A rugged landscape of jagged peaks and steep valleys the range is home to many severe storms as a result of the prevailing winds being forced to rise. It is assumed that the range is rich in various minerals and compounds but the complex geology that would enable such concentrations interfere with sensors preventing accurate scanning therefore the range remains largely un surveyed.
- Kuruna Caldera: At about 40 degrees latitude on the western slope of the spine mountains an ancient volcanic eruption blasted a large 18,000 square kilometer valley into the mountain range's side. The valley is thermally active with significant mineral deposits. Rivh veins of Alum and Doonium have been discovered along with smaller concentrations of Zersium, Rock ivory and Meleenium. The valley has been improved from its original uninspiring state of natural wildflower meadows, green trees and mountain vistas into a captivating vibrant landscape of industrial majesty with quaint factories releasing steam into the otherwise featureless sky as the hum and clang of industrial activity keeps the stillness of nature at bay and with the tedious local flora and fauna replaced by the hustle of factory workers bustling to and fro between their soothingly monotonous toil.
- Vheh'cin Sho'cye (White Dusty Sea): Located several kilometers below the Kuruna Valley. A depression where pyroclastic flows from the caldera have accumulated leaving a thick bed of mineral rich efflorescence (white powdery sediment). The area is akin to a salt flat and is dry and barren of life. This area is/was considered the abode of evil spirits and avoided by the native Amani. The sediment was found to be rich in Lommite and calcite which is extracted using open pit mines.
- The Wasuura'la-vhetin (Western Plains) an area of over 120 million square kilometers occupying approximately half of the planet's northern hemisphere. The area consists of a vast plain of uninterrupted grasslands, a mix of savannah, prairie and steppe depending on latitude, mostly flat but with some areas of gently rolling hills. It has rich soils conducive to agriculture and husbandry. The area is lightly populated being dotted with Stations (farm/ranch complexes) each of some 10–50 thousand square kilometers in size. Several Saandyr sub-clans have large estates in this area that function as district administration/trade hubs for the smaller settlements. Much of the farm and herding labor is done by droids.

POPULATION
- Native Species:
- Sentient: Amani
- Non Sentient: Carrier Butterfly, Charnoq Corinathoth Fwit and Mastiff Phalone
- Immigrated Species:

- Population: Sparse[/B] - 2+ million
- Demographics:
- The largest single demographic consisting of just under 40% of the total population is Human. Amani make up 25%. They are a primitive culture confined to the tropical forest and plains regions around the equator. Only about ten percent have integrated themselves into the general population. Another 25% percent of the population are various Near-human species and the remaining 10% are other. The inhabitants tend to be accepting of others. Due to the refugee origin of many of the inhabitants, the urban and industrial centers tend to be more multiethnic while the smaller rural settlements tend to be more homogeneous.
- Primary Languages: Galactic Basic, Mando'a, Amanese.
- Culture:
There are four classes of citizens Mando'ad, Domarian, Veh'vod and Amani, all are endowed with basic sentient rights but each have slightly different social expectations and obligations. The Mando'ad are the children of Mandalor, those that have taken up and live by the Resol'nare. They are expected to carry themselves as dictated by the creed. On Maridun most of this class are members of Clan Saandyr and have all the rights and obligations of the Clan and access to certain clan assets and are obligated to serve in the armed forces. Non Saandyr Mando'ad are viewed the same but without proprietary Saandyr clan access. Although not enshrined in legal practice the Mando'ad are generally looked upon as having a higher social status than the others. Next are the Domarians, full citizens that have sworn the Caburian creed instead of the Resol'nare. They have the same rights aside from some clan specific military and social duties as the Mando'ar and tend to be concentrated in the laboring/clerical/rural classes. The third are the Vehvod'ar, temporary inhabitants, travelers and non-citizen residents who typically are involved in trade and diplomacy. This is a small class and are afforded all the basic sentient rights but are not subject to military obligations or most civic responsibilities and do not have the right to participate in local governance. This class resides almost exclusively in the city of Haar-Dab'ika. The Amani are the fourth class. They reside mostly in self-governing protective reservations under their own tribal structure. As they are a primitive violent warlike race, travel into or out of the designated tribal areas is regulated. A subset of the tribal Amani, known as the 'Registered Amani or Rego's' have forsaken their old ways and adopted modern galactic culture. They have the same rights as the Vehvod'ar. They are sometimes looked down upon as uncouth country bumpkins. The culture is transitioning from an informal grouping of smugglers and farmers on a backwater frontier world to a more defined, orderly, economically diverse, modern society although it remains bifurcated between an industrial urban society and a rural agricultural one. Mandalorian is the dominate culture with both Galatic Standard and Mando'a taught in schools along with traditional Mandalorian values such as the importance of honor, loyalty, discipline and that it is one's actions that determine ones worth and reputation otherwise a comprehensive education is universal with higher education available via the clan and trade systems. Although race plays a small part in social status, the adoption of the Mandalorian ethos and adherence to Mandalorian principals are what matters most in this society. If one comports themselves accordingly, they will be accepted and respected.
Martial ability is still encouraged and esteemed but respect and reputation can also be gained by devotion to and competence in a trade, profession or business. A farmer or factory worker that devotes themselves to the betterment the community is just as worthy of respect as a warrior even if the social norms tend to value the warrior more highly. Mandor'ad are expected to be both martially and professionally competent with Domarians subject to lessor martial expectations. The Domarian class have even begun to mimic Mandalorian clan structure by creating their own social associations such as trade guilds, company societies, neighborhood associations and the like. Family and education is very important to all Maridunians and on restday it is not unusual to see a family relaxing in a park or enjoying some other sort of inclusive social activity. Respect for the elderly, referred to as Venerables, honesty and trustworthiness are considered virtuous traits to be admired and emulated.
The traditional Mandalorian sport Get'shuck is popular with the local team, The Maridun Charnoqs, reaching third place in the sector's Baskar Bowel. Nerf-throwing is a perennial favorite in the country and Shockboxing is still popular in the rougher circles despite the Lerman's repeated efforts to ban the sport. Once a year after the harvest season a large two weeklong festival called the Gruntak Festival takes place. During this time as many as twenty thousand tribal Amani travel from their tribal lands and set up camp outside the city. This fair stems from an old from when the Amani learned that they could trade with the smuggling camp for desirable items. While still a place to trade furs, skins, tropical wood and indigenous art and crafts for modern conveniences, it has expanded into a cultural fair where the natives and immigrants can peacefully mix together in cultural interaction. There are many food vendors, both local and off-world, musical and dance exhibitions and sporting events to experience. There are many competitions and displays of physical strength, stamina and martial ability as both the Mandalorians and Amani come from a martial culture they maintain a (mostly) friendly rivalry in that area. The Amani have a traditional form of limbo dance in which the Amani, being an evolved species of Planarians (flat Worm), they are very adept.
Some cultural idiosyncrasies have seeped into Maridunian culture. One is the propensity not to utilize land-speeders as a mode of transportation except by the wealthy as status symbols. Speeder bikes are used everywhere. Rickshaws, perhaps because of the narrow winding streets, are the primary conveyance in Haar-Dab'ika. While rural communities favor more practical skimmers and truck speeders, often with modified repulsorlifts to make the vehicle ride higher off the ground and accessorized with gun racks and imagery from the long defunct Mando Bu'canaragir to fill their transportation needs. Another is that Maridunian society is more accepting of droids and their use. This is mostly due to practicality as Maridun is a sparsely populated world that requires droids to perform the more dangerous and labor intensive tasks necessary for their economic and industrial advancements.
All in all, Mardunian society expects discipline, dedication and loyalty from its people but in return the Government will reciprocate the same to the people.
GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
- Government: Federal Mandalorian Clan System
- Affiliation:The planet is a constituent part of The Mandalorian Empire under the traditional Clan system. Clan Saandyr has de jure or de facto control of the local governing apparatuses.
- Wealth: [ Medium.
As a relatively recently settled planet, Maridun is still growing to fulfill its potential. It has significant natural resources that have begun to be exploited and some manufacturing takes place but it is still a developing economy. In sixty years, the planet has risen from a stone age hunter gatherer economy with a single itinerant smuggling camp into a modern industrialized resource extraction economy and it is likely, given time, that they will continue to move up the value-added chain to grow to become a high or even wealthy economy.
- Stability: [ High.
To put it simply the planets political, social and economic institutions fashioned by the ruling Clan are comparatively new and the economy has been good so there has been little impetus for any meaningful dissent to form. The pace of social and economic change has been brisk so there is the potential for dissatisfaction but so far, the changes have manifested as evolution and opportunity rather than disenfranchisement. The general overarching theme of the society in heavily influenced by Mandalorian culture society has a rich tradition of interaction with many different races and cultures.
- Freedom & Oppression:
The people and residents of Maridun enjoy considerable personal freedoms. The laws are broadly based on Mandalorian Clan customs and jurisprudence and are, by and large, fairly and justly enforced. A certain adherence to customs and civic duty is expected but not harshly imposed relying upon social pressure and civil fines rather than harsh retribution for enforcement. An important aspect in the expectation of civil rights is the notion of personal honor and duty. The state obligates itself to the maintenance and preservation of all honorable citizens without prejudice but those who have been adjudicated to have broken the social covenant are no longer entitled to receive the full protections citizens enjoy. One type of crime is dealt with much more severely here than on other worlds. Theft. Those convicted of theft are required to pay restitution to the victim. If they lack the means they can be forced to enter into a period of indentured servitude until the debt is paid. In addition, they can be subject to imprisonment at hard labor, branding, fines, loss of rights, and/or forced exile. Personal conduct and accountability not race creed or class determines the freedoms enjoyed so as long as a being conducts themselves within the broad bounds of accepted social norms, they are able to lead a free and full life without the fear of oppression.
MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
- Military:
As a part of the Mandalorian Empire the planet can rely upon the Imperial Military to supplement its self-defense. That being said the military resources of the planet, which are organized under the Mandalorian system, are robust, well trained and capable. The backbone of the Maridun defense force is the Saandyr Aliit-Akaan'ade, the private army of Clan Saandyr, which is a very combat capable institution being as good as, and probably better equipped, than all but the most elite Mandalorian units. This force is augmented by the Maridun Constabulary, a para-military police force that can operate as light infantry or space marines. The Clan citadel contains the planetary defense HQ and fortified military instillations and is shielded. Otherwise, the planetary defense consists of minor ground fortifications and customs/atmospheric shields which would be of little use to an organized well-equipped military. The Clan also maintains naval forces suitable for the defense needs of the sector and the Constabulary routinely patrols the sector to ensure safe navigation.
- Technology: Galactic Standard with the manufacturing and agricultural sectors at state-of-the-art level.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The most significant thing about Maridun's history is that not much of significance has ever occurred there and to say that Maridun was in the middle of nowhere would be to ascribe it more prominence than it deserved. What led to the planet's seclusion was that it was located off a minor path near the heavily traveled Hydian Way. Therefore, anyone passing by was likely traveling to someplace more significant and had little reason to interrupt their journey. Maridun was the definition of fly over planet. People may have known it was there but they didn't care.
That being said Maridun is an ancient world with a history dating back over 26,000 years to the infinite Empire who discovered and claimed the planet but then apparently left and never came back so the planet was left to rotate undisturbed around its star for the next 20,000 years. A group of Mandalorian refugees sought sanctuary there for a time after the war against the Galactic Republic some 5,000 years ago but when the system was finally mapped 300 years later the Mandalorians had moved on leaving little evidence of their occupancy.
The official discovery and mapping of the system did alter the future of the planet as smugglers found it a convenient out of the way (but not too out of the way) place to exchange goods. After a time a few temporary, makeshift buildings were added as smugglers would sometimes use the rendezvous site as a temporary hide out but there still was no permanent settlement. The site slowly grew through the decades as a dirt landing zone was cleared and some permanent buildings were constructed to provide rudimentary maintenance and storage facilities and site transferred from a camp to an outpost. It grew again when, during the collapse of the Galactic Republic, a group of Lurmen refugees arrived and established a farming community in the vicinity of the camp giving permanence to the site and establishing what could finally be called a settlement. Growth was slow and little changed through the intervening centuries. Mercifully the planet was spared the ravages of the Gulag Virus and the planet slipped unnoticed back into oblivion. Omni's rise and fall and the Great Galactic War touched the planet little aside from the arrival of small desperate refugees arriving now and again to rest and recoup before largely moving on. During this time the settlement was in constant danger from the Amani, the planets native sentient population of warlike stone age headhunting hunter gathers, who would constantly raid the settlements and farms inhibiting growth. Eventually the Amani learned that they could barter with the settlers for otherwise unobtainable goods and an uneasy truce was arranged allowing the settlers to reside unmolested within a limited area around the settlement in return for providing offworld goods. This explains why, even though there was an offworld settlement on the planet for centuries, the vast interior was little explored for the Amani would viciously attack any settlers, or even other Amani, they found in their claimed territories. This agreement wile hampering the expansion of the settlement gave it some security.
Some sixty years ago, with their Clanlands on Mandalore occupied and plundered for resources Clan Saandyr chose exile instead of subservience and was dispersed throughout the galaxy. Like so many had done before, a remnant of the clan escaped on the quiet planet of Maridun. This event was to have a seminal impact on the future of the planet for unlike so many other previous refugees, these migrants would stay and make Manduin their new home. The population of the camp rapidly rose from a few hundred to a few thousand as the new arrivals founded an actual town on the site which they named Haar-Dab'ika after the original purpose of the site. The peaceful and rural Lerman population encouraged the development but the rowdier smuggling element was less accepting but realized it wise not to argue with several hundred dour well-armed, and after the fall of their home planet, pissed off Mandalorians. Over the next few years modern infrastructure systems were constructed with the town continuing to grow, a proper spaceport being constructed and with it the basis of commerce which would sustain, enable and enrich a vibrant economy. The Clan established a second town to the North in a mineral rich area and established the region as their clan stronghold and industrial base shipping raw materials to Haar-Dab'ika for consumption and trade.
Things were going well for the Mandalorian colony, which is what the planet had become, but the rapid expansion of off-worlders finally exhausted the tolerance of the Amani who resumed their raids against the colonizers. But, unlike before, these were not disorganized smugglers or pacifist Lerman farmers so the Amani found the raids to be costly and ineffective. A low scale brush war was simmered between the Amani who would raid farms and slaughter livestock and Mandalorians. But the simmering conflict changed when a group of about two dozen foundlings and their chaperones were ambushed wile on a training exercise in the Western Plains. By the time help arrived the group had been massacred and, in Amani custom, the enemy remains had been mutilated and parts taken as trophies. This was too much for the Mandalorians to bear and began the defining period of Clan involvement on the planet which was to become known as the Pacification of Maridun to the Mandalorians and 'The Bitter Storm' to the Amani.
The Pacification of Maridun began when in response to Amani aggression, the Clan Alor declared an Akior Akaa'nar (summon to war) summoning all Saandyr verda throughout the galaxy to assemble without delay to the planet of Maridun with arms and armor to defend the Clans honor Outnumbered by thousands to one, Clan Saandyr gathered their strength and marched to war beginning the bitter and brutal two year conflict that came to be known as the Pacification of Maridun. Clan Saandyr would fight for their foundlings and would prevail or perish.
The Amani were a strong warrior race where the males, females and even children fought with an almost primeval ferocity They were mobile and knew the ground well. They were deadly in hand-to-hand combat. And they were vastly superior in numbers. The Mandalorians, themselves a warrior race, had the advantage of technology. They were more organized and disciplined but their task would be long and fraught with dangers. The first engagements, where the Amani used their superior numbers to swarm their opponents in open battle, resulted in horrendous casualties with little gain. The Amani were primitive but not stupid and were able to modify their tactics to engage in swift, unexpected, hit and run tactics un expectedly attacking an isolated outpost and swiftly melting back into the vastness of the long grass in an attempt to keep the Mandos off balance. The Mandalorians in turn adopted a strategy of using their technically superior air and mobile abilities to preempt hostile formations before they could reach their target and to closely peruse the enemy when they attempted to withdraw to maximize their casualties and deny them secure areas to operate from. The first half of the war saw the Amani steadily beaten back from the open plains as the Mando strike teams forced the Amani warriors to withdraw further and further from the open plains and into the tropical rain forests along the equator which were their traditional homeland. The Amani were able to inflict casualties upon the off-worlders and achieved some successes but always at a heavy cost. They were ultimately forced to retreat into their homeland forests where they fought tenaciously on in the more restricted terrain. The Mandalorians, just as determined but cognizant that battling the Amani in their dense terrain of their traditional lands would be very costly in terms of casualties instituted a campaign of areal and planetary bombardments to render large swaths of the rain forests uninhabitable for the Amani thereby systematically reducing their viable habitat and the resources available to continue hostilities.
After two years of fighting and the loss of three quarters of their population and potential loss of the remaining rain forests, which they regarded as sacred, the Amani had little choice but to yield or be destroyed so ultimately surrendered to Clan Saandyr. The conditions for peace were strict but not unduly punitive. Many Mandalorians considered them lenient. The Amani were given the choice to swear to a version of the Caburian creed and be accepted as citizens, which about 10% did, go into exile, which about 25% did (mostly to Utapau), or to accept the status of a protectorate of Clan Saandyr, be allocated tribal reserve lands within the areas of the remaining rain forests where they would be granted limited local authority and self-determination. They would be restricted from venturing out of their designated lands and non-Amani were prevented from entering tribal land without approval which the remainder agreed to. Moreover, they would be provided with technical assistance with agriculture in order to become self-sustaining. And efforts would be made to remediate the damage done to the rain forests. In the intervening years the peace pretty much held but even years later the Amani have yet to fully recover from their losses and their population is a fraction of what it once was. The conflict also had a profound effect upon the victors. They no longer viewed themselves as colonists or settlers. Members of Clan Saandyr now viewed Maridun as their own, paid in blood and their rightful clan lands by honor and iron.
The Planetshift event was the next incident that impacted the planet's historical trajectory… literally. Once the shift settled the Maridun System found itself no longer in an isolated unimportant patch of space. It was now within the core area of Mandalorian space and in a position to influence, and be influenced by, the scramble to reestablish Mandalorian hegemony in the sector.
The planet Maridun was no longer unremarkable and unimportant. - Native Species:
