STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

(+) Knowledge- Margaret has a head full of stuff. She's spent the better part of three decades traveling and learning, and in that time, has amassed a significant knowledge base. Very little of what she's learned has anything to do with the Force, but if you need to know about bantha husbandry or crop rotations, she can probably help.
(+) Duelist- Though she avoids fighting as much as humanly possible, when backed into a corner, Margaret is a capable duelist. She focuses almost exclusively on Makashi, much like her former master.
(-) Aging- Though the Force can overcome a great many things, it doesn't help much with stiff joints and failing eyesight. Though Margaret's use of Makashi allows her to stay competitive in a fight, she'd not much for acrobatics anymore, and her arms just aren't long enough to read labels. Despite that, she refuses to get reading glasses.
(-) Tactless- Jedi are known for their diplomatic prowess. Margaret is known for being an ass. It's not that she doesn't understand how being nice works, she just doesn't care to waste her breath.

APPEARANCE:
Margaret is of average height, with a slightly stocky build. She's put on a fair bit of muscle over the years, thanks to her hobby of helping with manual labor to earn her meals, but age has softened her a bit. She has short brown hair that's rapidly fading to grey. She prefers dark, practical clothing over the traditional robes, though she does like to be on the stylish side of functional when she can manage.

BIOGRAPHY:
Like many Jedi, Margaret was discovered by an Order at an early age and taken from her family to be trained in the ways of the Force. Her earliest memories are of working with other Padawans to master her abilities. From a young age, she had a contrarian streak that just didn't sit well with her Masters. The first word out of her mouth when presented with a new piece of dogma was usually "why?" After an explanation, it was often followed by "well that's just dumb." Her natural rebelliousness and blunt nature didn't exactly endear her to her teachers, but even her most outspoken critics could grudgingly admit that her devotion to the Light was unshakable, even if she didn't always agree with them on how best to serve it.

At the age of 11, she was accepted as a Padawan by one of this particular Order's black sheep. Jedi Master Artus Sangiorge also had a reputation as a free thinker, and he immediately took a shine to his outspoken apprentice. He taught her a great many lessons that she would carry with her for the rest of her life, chief among them was that violence was abhorrent, but sometimes necessary.

It was a common tenet of the Jedi Order throughout the ages that a Jedi should only fight in defense of self or others, but Sangiorge took it one step further: one should do everything in their power to avoid a fight. But, once all other options were exhausted and the only choice left was to conflict, one should hold nothing back. If the enemy was that devoted to fighting, he said, then their devotion should be rewarded. This made perfect sense to Margaret, but it was a philosophy that didn't sit well with the Council at all.

Eventually, this point of conflict lead to Master Sangiorge being excommunicated from the Order. The Council grew frustrated with his refusal to take a more proactive role in their fight against the Sith, and on those rare occasions when he did fight, they were horrified at his refusal to show mercy to downed opponents. Margaret was 17 at this point.

She would have left the Order with Master Sangiorge, had he made her promise to stick it out at least until she was 20. He argued that, if she truly sought knowledge, she must give consideration to opposing viewpoints, if only to better understand the arguments she would face in her life.

The Council, wary of Master Sangiorge's influence, refused her requests for a new master, and instead put her to work around the Temple. She was not allowed to interact with her fellow Padawans for fear that she might corrupt them, but she wasn't allowed to train with any of the Knights or Masters either. She quickly grew frustrated by their continued stonewalling, and began ambushing Masters in public places to debate esoteric bits of philosophy. At first a few of the more sympathetic ones humored her, but even they admitted there was a problem when they realized they were avoiding public areas altogether for fear of being caught off guard by Margaret and her prodigious collection of notes.

In a closed meeting, a little over a year after Master Sangiorge's exile, the Council admitted that Margaret had been wronged. They admitted that her case had been poorly handled, and they should have done more to help her back on the right track. Having admitted their guilt, they promptly declared her a failure, kicked her out of the Order, and told her never to come back.

Margaret was left with two choices: she could either let it go, accept her fate and try to lead a normal life as best she could, or she could get revenge. She chose the latter path, but in a way that was uniquely her own. Rather than turn Dark and murder the lot, she did the thing that would annoy them the most: she started traveling the galaxy as she had with Master Sangiorge, learning what she could, helping where she could, and teaching anyone who would listen.

It's been nearly three decades since that fateful day, and not much has changed. Margaret is still as gruff and contrarian as ever. She's still determined to help the galaxy and serve the Light, and she's still just as determined to do it in her own inimitable fashion. She's been approached by several Orders over the years, some out of pity, others just to stop her running around and making trouble, and still others because they thought she was doing the right thing, but she told them all the same thing: find a cactus patch, drop trou, and jump in bare-assed and backwards.
