SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Spreads a large shield in front of the ship blocking all enemy fire from in front of it. This shield is extremely strong and powered by additional generators. This framework can fold up into two ‘wings’.
  • This shield is much stronger than it seems, but if penetrated the framework is fragile and vulnerable to damage.
  • The shield protectors extend the protection out to a square 600m x 600m.
  • The Mantle’s weapons cannot fire in front of the ship, but can fire to the sides and rear of it.
Strengths:
  • Shield. By placing the Mantle in front of an advancing fleet it will absorb incoming fire. Even if placed in front of a larger ship it will take the brunt of the majority of the fire.
  • Defences. The Mantle has strong defences especially against attack craft. Any fighters or bombers trying to get behind the shield will be under fire from many weapons.
Weaknesses:
  • Overload. Though it is strong, the Mantle’s shield can and will eventually fail if hit by enough firepower, especially at close range.
  • Framework. The shield framework, once the energy shield is gone, is vulnerable to damage because the whole structure is quite flimsy. Damaging this will prevent the shield coming back online.
  • Direction. If a ship can manage to behind the shield itself and can fire into the weaker backside of it, the ship is much more vulnerable to damage.
  • Blocking. The Mantle protects ships behind it…but equally prevents them firing forward as well.
Description:
The Mantle is a purely single-purpose ship – to go in front of a fleet and absorb fire.
To do this, it deploys a large framework before it which is covered in thousands of complex shield generators and emitters. The ship activates these to create a giant barrier. The framework is 400 metres square, but the projectors increase the area projected to 600 metres square.
Moving in front of a fleet, the Mantle absorbs fire which would hit ships behind it. Once the shield is down or combat is engaged, it withdraws, often positioning itself behind a large capital ship to protect it in combat.

The Mantle is mainly armed with defensive weapons, all located behind the shield framework. This is to prevent enemy fighters and bombers getting in behind the framework and destroying it piecemeal.
Of course the Mantle cannot sustain unlimited fire, and once it goes down the framework becomes vulnerable to further bombardment, and the ship itself becomes vulnerable.
