Man, it's Hard to find a Master - (Advice Thread)

As a new member I can understand the OP's concern; I've been putting out feelers for a Force trainer since I arrived but haven't found a master yet, but I don't consider that to be a bad thing-- it's allowed me to take my character into directions that I would definitely never have considered if I'd just forced a student-master relationship for the sake of it. Dion is Force Sensitive and he is open to learning new things, but those things will be part of a long journey that help to shape his character, rather than his identity as a Force-user being the primary factor shaping him.

So, my advice would be just to be patient-- I think rushing into a character concept without allowing some organic RP to provide a foundation is a recipe for a character one gets quickly bored with!

I've had... five apprentices with Veino, if I remember correctly. Only one of them stuck around longer than about two weeks. That makes it really difficult for me to take any new ones. Plus, not many people want to learn to be a Jensaarai, so that makes a small pool of people to begin with. But overall, I'd say throw yourself into threads. Start public threads. Join public threads. Experiment with your powers. Take advantage of offers for one-off lessons from different characters and build relationships from those.

Ask.

I personally picked Dune's to ask based on her being quirky, non-conventional and largely non-violent. Unique characteristics on your own part definitely help! Try to find a poster who you can get along with/you suit each other. Don't be Mary-Sue Badass; your Master is 10x better than your character in experience hence why that PC is a Knight/Master or Lord/Darth.

One thing that's worth mentioning is that it's not all about the training.

Some writers just want their character to become a Knight and then Master as soon as possible. But others actually want to RP the Master-Padawan relationship. I can still remember the first time I read a post when her Master called Corvus her Padawan. It was actually a very special moment.

Lots of talking means character development. Flaws, secret desires, plans, hopes, dreams etc.

As a new member I can definitely say that it seems daunting to find a master. However, I'm very thankful for this thread, it helps to know that it's not the only way to advance. I'm not ready to jump into training for this character yet, but I'm hoping to build some connections by RPing.

I think my main issue is that I've been a fan of SW for some time now, but still a bit lacking in knowledge about combat. I would normally RP a NFU, but looking to push myself this time.

I'm saying that I am very selective about whom I teach (most of the time, that is)...

So yeah, sorry 'bout that. But I agree with [member="Sage Bane"] -- if people can't appear as somebody who really needs the place as my Apprentice, I don't feel inspired to write the Mastership. I've taken such people as Padawans before and the overall muse of both me and the other writer dropped during that.

But anybody can bug my Knights-Masters if they want. :p

I've offered to train several... Had about three or five bites... One half-way stuck around, but I had a brief LOA and when I came back he had advanced enough all around I basically rubber stumped his promotion. My fault there, not his. Admittedly, I only have one Knight that openly makes knowledge of his powers available. Ostanes/Uriel is pretty covert about his Force Usage. But Julius? I've actively posted that I was seeking a student in several venues, and only got one or two replies. The last time I posted publicly? The replies I got via PM or the thread showed pretty clearly those responding didn't even bother to read what I posted. Now tell me, if you can't even read the request thread, why would I believe any of the rest of it is going to go smoothly? That would be one thing...

Another bit I've seen some expressed here, but not quite the same way as myself is these super-detailed requests. 'I want my Master to have X/Y/Z skills to teach me'... A Master-Padawan relationship (I don't do the Dark Side of things much, so differences abound there I suspect) isn't in my mind particularly about skills. It is about developing your personality, your personal morals, etc... It even says in the book 'The Jedi Path' that the Order in the Old Republic days encouraged Masters to seek out Padawans that differ from themselves. That you should learn as much or more from your Padawan than they you.. It is what I am doing with my newest student on Julius. We couldn't be more different, and I honestly can't wait to RP that struggle and those quirks! And where his talents differ from mine and he needs skill developments? ICly, I would be a poor Master for him if I didn't go to others and go "My Padawan excels at _____, who may I refer him to for further training?".

I can't agree more with [member="Sage Bane"] and [member="Corvus Raaf"] though... Get out there... Develop yourself. Develop your bio. Give people a REASON to want to teach you. A blank slate may sound appealing, but in truth it is off putting. And switching factions or alignments just to get a Master is... Well... I don't have a high opinion of it...

I have a Padawan, so I won't take another until he is ready for Knighthood... But if you want lightsaber training? I've got three forms under my belt... I'm actively seeking to Master more. Hit me up, i'll train you at my place on Socorro...
