OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To update and expand upon the canon planet Makeb under its current regime for Chaos use.
  • Canon: Yes
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Links: Leader of Makeb
    GENERAL INFORMATION
    • Planet Name: Makeb.
    • Demonym: Makebian.
    • Region: Mid Rim.
    • System Name: Makeb System.
    • System Features: One large yellow sun around which Makeb orbits, a number of smaller celestial bodies and asteroids.
    • Location: Hex.
    • Major Imports:
      • Foodstuffs.
      • Luxury goods from the Core Worlds.
      • Large quantities of alcohol.
      • Clothing.
      • Armaments, security, and mercenaries.
    • Major Exports:
      • Makebian marble.
      • Makebian flora and fauna.
      • Sculptures.
      • Luxury decor.
      • Isotope-5.
      • Technology.
    • Unexploited Resources: Once Isotope-5, Makeb learnt to harness the resource following the Hutt Cartel's meddling during the Galactic Cold War however.
  • GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
    • Gravity: Typically just below standard, however Makeb is prone to extremes of gravitational fluctuations and anomalies caused by the heavy concentrations of Isotope-5 in its Core, leading to a general inability to classify its gravity as a whole.
    • Climate: Makeb sports a year-round Subtropical climate that lends to its designation as a Resort world. In its inhabited zones Makeb is traditionally free of humidity and precipitation due to the extreme altitude of the mesas and plateaus its population centres are based upon, often rising high above cloud-level, though its uninhabited lowlands closer to sea-level are prone to jungle-like conditions.
    • Primary Terrain: The majority of Makeb's surface is covered in ocean, however sporadic land masses are dotted around the planet, sporting large plateaus, mesas, and rock formations upon which the people of Makeb inhabit.
    • Atmosphere: Type I, prone to heavy electromagnetic interference.
  • LOCATION INFORMATION
    • Capital City: Talaos City.
    • Planetary Features:
      • Plateaus and Mesas: Makeb's most notable feature is its large quantity of plateaus and mesas atop which sit the civilisation of the planet; large stone columns of natural formation are often capped with beautifully appointed cities, resorts, and villas, while the plateaus feature diverse flora and fauna. Waterfalls are a common sight, pouring down from the mesas like sculptural fountains, with innumerable cave systems running within the great stone structures.
      • Ocean: Makeb is primarily covered in a vast body of water that spans the entirety of the globe, featuring a range of biodiversity that is largely uncategorised due to Makebian’s proclivity for residing high above sea level atop the mesas.
      • Lowlands: Closer to sea level at the base of many of Makeb's plateaus are pockets of lowlands occupied primarily by uninhabited jungle or arid zones of pale orange rock. Numerous flora and fauna can be found here, but the people of Makeb live above.
      • Mining Facilities: Large, orb-shaped laser drills for extracting Isotope-5 and Makeb's many other bountiful minerals are a common sight, surrounded by workers camps and heavy machinery. These are often away from population centres so as not to ruin the aesthetic views of the residents and tourists, however.
      • Skyhooks: Makeb features a number of tall structures known as skyhooks, vast turbolift elevators leading up to orbital space-stations, that allow the transport of export and import goods with ease to avoid the extremely volatile gravitational atmosphere of the planet. They are the primary form of access, with visitors ships docking in orbit.
    • Major Locations:
      • Talaos City: Makeb's grand capital city and the first place on the planet settled by Makeb's refugee founders, Talaos City sprawls across a great mesa of the same name, and serves as the economic and cultural centre of the planet. Constructed primarily of beautiful white marble and planned keenly with aestheticism in mind, Talaos City sports vast swathes of manicured parkland, rooftop pergolas, with extensive statuary and embellishment. Many of Makeb's businesses are centred here in sprawling headquarters, with innumerable bars, resort locations, and entertainment destinations. The city is also notable for its policy of 'hidden emplacements', defensive equipment such as anti air turrets and shield generators carefully disguised in monuments and natural fixtures so as not to disturb the carefully laid aestheticism.
      • Cloudside Resorts: Perhaps Makeb’s most prestigious and famed resort, Cloudside is also one of the oldest, established by House Hylani during the first influx of tourism following the planet’s re-introduction to the galaxy. Situated high above sea level on one of Makeb’s tallest mesa spires, the resort offers the bleeding edge of leisure and luxury, with priceless views and the height of hospitality. Demand is always high, and the clientele exclusive.
      • Stronghold One: Also known colloquially as the Treasury by the few in government who know about its existence, Stronghold One is a subterranean fortress located deep beneath Makeb’s surface in a volcanically active mesa, that contains what constitutes for the planet’s treasury. Outfitted with six separate levels of defence, accessible only by energy bridges from one entrance, the fortress is nigh impenetrable, submerged as it is in an active volcano.
      • Chairman’s Palace: Once the hall of the ruling Business Council on Makeb, the vast building in the heart of Talaos City has been converted into the heart of the new autocratic government, housing the Chairman and the chief ministers of his cabinet. It dominates what contributes to Talaos’ skyline, with high towers of glittering white marble and considerable defensive emplacements.
      • Keylander Station: Also known as the ‘Gateway to Makeb’, Keylander Station is the largest orbital station attached to Makeb by a large Skyhook, this is typically the entrance point to which most visitors access Makeb, bypassing the intense fluctuations of the planet’s atmosphere by docking their ships in orbit and taking the skyhook down. It also allows ease of resource import and exportation, rather than risk valuable cargo by entering the atmosphere via ship.

    • POPULATION
      • Native Species: No known sentients, but fauna include: Barbed Ginx, Exoboar,
      • Immigrated Species: Humans, Chagrians, Twi’leks, Weequay, Zabrak, various other sentient species, primarily those from former Republic Space.
      • Population: Moderate - In the tens of millions.
      • Demographics: With the primary and dominant social species on Makeb being humans demographically they make up over half the population, however since its foundation as a haven for refugees fleeing the Mandalorian Wars, Makeb has boasted a diverse population including multiple alien species from the worlds of the former Republic, leading to a colourful and cosmopolitan society with mixed and positive integrations all round- regardless of species, the people of Makeb often consider themselves Makebian first due to the insular nature of the planet, and as a result racial tensions are extremely low.
      • Primary Languages: Galactic Basic is the primary language spoken on Makeb due to the diverse culture and the need to unify the early settlers of mixed species under one language.
      • Culture: With a laissez faire attitude to life and a bind of nationalist independence, Makebian culture is generally laid-back and sophisticated, espousing the qualities of racial equality, planetary self-governance, and entrepreneurial spirit. With an extremely low domestic population relative to Makeb’s heavy revenue streams, living wages are high compared to the galactic average, and the quality of life for even the most blue-collar among the populace great in comparison to planets of high social disparity. Making extensive use of automated droid labour, the native peoples of Makeb make a lifestyle out of leisure, enjoying the fruits of their planet almost as much as the many millions of tourists that flock to their resorts each year. As a result, the arts are flourishing on Makeb, with national excellence in sculpture especially apparent Makebian sculptors and their creations are renowned, as are the many minds devoted solely to maintaining and improving the careful aesthetic balance of the planet in fields such as botany, architecture, and landscaping.

Drink and revelry are very common, and while Makebian functions tend to be much more sophisticated affairs than those of nearby Hutt Space, the planet sports just as many nightclubs and destinations for raucous holidaying youth as it does elite leisure facilities for those of refined tastes.

Clothing on Makeb tends to be bright, airy, and elaborate, with ever changing styles evolving with the social seasons, it is common to see shades of azure and cerulean that reflects the great distant oceans below, a colour repeated commonly in Makebian iconography and architectural flourishes. Makebians also tend to be conspicuous consumers, with a proclivity for displaying their wealth with precious gems, rare shimmersilks, and luxury goods imported from the Core Worlds.

With both mining and leisure being the two largest pillars of Makebian society, they apply a similarly balanced view to the management of the planet itself, with a great respect for the planet’s native flora and fauna leading to many reserves of uninterrupted wildlife, and the distancing of all industrial operations from population centres- as a result a ‘natural’ aesthetic pervades the planet, its skylines free of skyscrapers or other signs of industrial expansion, and most buildings being fashioned from rich white marbles surrounded by manicured gardens and wide usage of water.
    • GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
      • Government: Oligarchic Autocracy.
      • Affiliation: While currently unaffiliated, Makeb seeks alliance with the CIS.
      • Wealth: Wealthy.[/B] With a low population, extremely high yield of rare and valuable resources such as minerals and Isotope-5, and a booming tourism industry that attracts billions in revenue each year, Makeb has deep pockets and a culture built on entrepreneurial success.
      • Stability: [ High. With a recently established autocratic government fuelled by the wish and will of the people, Makeb’s political landscape has reached a sense of stability and focus it has not experienced in many years, with a populace that largely backs the decision to oust the former government and place control in the hands of a decisive ruler. As a tourism hotspot and famed resort destination, Makeb is welcoming and extremely safe for outsiders with civil intentions, with a welcoming populace weaned on the warm outlook of the hospitality industry. While there are factions who believe Makeb should be even more insular and close its borders entirely, they are rare, and the planet is generally safe and welcoming.
      • Freedom & Oppression: While the people of Makeb are free and uninhibited, the ruling class was recently largely abolished with the creation of the State Conglomeration Act that dissolved Makeb’s ruling body and installed a dictator, leading to the mass seizure of assets from formerly wealthy ruling families by the State. As a result, the economy now resides almost solely in the hands of the Chairman, though the average citizen remains unaffected save for their wage being drawn up by the state instead of private employers in some sectors. A recent drive for planetary militarisation has also tightened immigration and increased civil securities, the presence of armed police forces and droid patrols more common than ever, though it is a soothing balm to much of the populace who are afraid by recent galactic events.
    • MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
      • Military: Until recently Makeb did not have a unified military, and relied solely on ragtag local militias and heavy subsidisation with mercenary forces. However, a recent push of militarisation has seen a rapid increase in the number of armed forces present on the planet, with its first standing army, the People’s Forces of Makeb, coming into formation. While a lot of this is formed from trained volunteers and conscripts, the bulk of the force is droids due to the planet's low population and technological advancements. Heavy spending has recently been poured into the importation of weapons from the Core and Nar Shaddaa, as well as the establishment of the planet’s first fleet to protect it above orbit.

Isotope-5 is being heavily researched for implementation in military activities, and the planet’s scientists are hard at work to supplement importation with home-made instruments of Isotope-5.
      • Technology: While widely conforming to the Galactic Standard across the planet, Makeb is home to the rare resource Isotope-5, and as a result sports functioning and theoretical usages of the element that push Makeb’s technological status over the edge. The planet is also above-standard in mining equipment, leisure facilities, and droid labour, given its economy relies on all three to function as well as it does.
    • HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Undiscovered and unclaimed for millennia save for the non-sentient species that called the planet home, Makeb was first officially discovered by accident by Republic refugees fleeing the devastation of the Mandalorian Wars; a damaged escape craft carrying many refugees crash-landed upon the planet’s surface while journeying through the sector, and the survivors had little choice but to adapt to their surroundings. With a number of business leaders among the new settlers, they lead efforts to build the first of Makeb’s settlements, beginning near what is now the metropolis of Talaos City, the planet’s capital.

Under the leadership of businessman Semako Thalien, and the early ancestors of the Avesta and Hylani families, Makeb’s new denizens were startled to discover the planet’s rich abundance of mineral resources, and began to fabricate improvised mining tools to extract some of the bounty. Over generations Makeb was able to grow its civilisation beyond the primitive state it had begun in, and began to turn a profit. Within fifty years of regaining contact with the rest of the Galaxy, Makeb’s wealth soared, due in part to its resources, and the careful planning of the business leaders who had founded it.

In swift order Makeb grew both its mining and tourism industries due to demand for resources and the planet’s unique composition making it a perfect resort for many of the Galaxies wealthiest denizens. Under the Avesta and Hylani families, the Makeb Business Council was established as Makeb’s planetary government, an oligarchy of the wealthiest managing the planet’s affairs through their control of industry, and while it received offers, Makeb declined to join the Galactic Republic, remaining fiercely independent to outside control, instead negotiating profitable trade deals with the senate, and rebuffing all of the Hutt Cartel’s attempts to gain a foothold.

In 3639BBY, Makeb was invaded by the forces of the Hutt Cartel against the backdrop of renewed hostility between the Republic and Reconstituted Sith Empire of Darth Vitiate. Ultimately resulting in the ousting of the Cartel, this event was a phyric victory for the people of Makeb that saw the planet saved from total destruction, yet made it briefly uninhabitable or all but mining droids and the extremely determined outfitted in protective environmental suits at all times. Many families did not return, and it took the currying of favour with the Sith Empire for certain business dynasties to reclaim their holdings, such as House Hylani, but ultimately Makeb was resettled and freed from Imperial control as the decades wore on, and the planet’s core was stabilised into equilibrium once more.

With recent events conspiring to cause chaos in the Galaxy, and the utter sundering of the Republic and its many remnants, the people of Makeb longed for change and decisive leadership, tired of the squabbling and inaction of the Business Council getting them nowhere, while hostile empires loom on the edges of space. To this end, a local collectivist movement gained traction, under the careful guidance of House Hylani, resulting in the violent overthrow of the Business Council and the installation of a state dictatorship. Under the newly titled Chairman Zirin Hylani, Makeb’s new state seized all assets from the other ruling families, gaining near total economic control with the banks, mining operations, and tourism sectors firmly secured with the State Conglomeration Act. This, coupled by rapid militarisation and the formation of Makebs first standing army and orbital fleet, has gone some way to assuage the fears of the Makebian people who wish for security and stability, and the planet looks westward to the Confederacy of Independent Systems for alliance.

It's always good to see canon planets getting elaborated upon in the Codex. There are just a few points that I have, before I'll send you along for the second level review.

1. Missing Template Field (Permissions).

Please refer to the template and include the required Permissions field in the Out of Character section, then mark as appropriate (e.g. N/A).

2. Relevant Links (Board History)

Your history section jumps from 3639 BBY to present day, which means its glossing over roughly 4,500 years -- including the Gulag Plague and Four Hundred Years Darkness. As noted in the rules, planet submissions should reflect Chaos History.

Now, that does mean you need to go through every event in the current gap in time, but this submission should reflect what was happening on Makeb during the major events on the Chaos timeline that impacted every planet, such as the Gulag Plague or Netherworld. I also note that Makeb has been held by various Major Factions on the board, including the Red Ravens crime syndicate (to include being the target of a rebellion), as well as the Republic Remnant. Those events may also be worth noting.

3. Relevant Links (Content)
  • System Name: Makeb System.
Please link the Makeb System here.

  • Native Species: No known sentients, but fauna include: Barbed Ginx, Exoboar, Makrin, Pterathki, Subteroth, Underwalker, Vrake.
  • Immigrated Species: Humans, Chagrians, Twi’leks, Weequay, Zabrak, various other sentient species, primarily those from former Republic Space.
There are a lot of species here, sentient and non-sentient that some writers may not be familiar with. As such, please include links for the benefit of the reader. Speaking for myself, I had to look up what a Chagrian was, as that was a race I didn't recall seeing before.

4. System Features

  • System Features: One large yellow sun around which Makeb orbits, a number of smaller celestial bodies and asteroids.
My last item: The Wookieepedia entry for the Makeb system includes 2 artificial satellites, including one in orbit of Makeb. Are those still present in modern day?

Those are my thoughts, I look forward to yours in reply. Please tag me once you have completed your edits. Cheers.

Hey thank you for the thorough review!

Will be happy to add the required links, missing field, and elaborate the events in the history- mainly glossed over the Chaos specific events because it was difficult to find exactly which factions held the planet and when through the search bar, and as the Red Raven occupation was way back in 2014 I honestly wasn't sure whether it would still be considered site canon, but thank you for supplying the links, I missed some of that so I really appreciate it!

I see that you've made a few edits. I'm assuming you're still working on those, so I just wanted to leave a reminder to please tag me once you've completed your changes so that I know when this is ready for another look.

Hey sorry for taking so long to get back to you, and for dripping in revisions to the sumbission- I ended up losing a big chunk of my progress and subsequently getting swept up in a bunch of RL stuff, but given recent events I've got more free time on my hands now so aim to get this completely done in the next few days!

Sorry for the delays and I appreciate your attentiveness and patience!
