BIOGRAPHY:

The House of Hylani:

Established in the waning days of the Mandalorian Wars by refugees from the Tapani Sector, the earliest members of House Hylani were wealthy businessmen and vassals of House Barnaba with significant holdings on Vycinyth, Coruscant, Zeltros and other resort destinations across the Galaxy, fleeing the devastation the Mandalorians wrought, warriors with no taste for leisure. Cut off from the rest of the Galaxy and forced to adapt, the Hylani did what they did best and laid the foundations for Makeb's earliest settlements with their keen talent for administration. When contact was at last re-established with the Galaxy at large, House Hylani was at the forefront of Makeb's booming new tourism industry, quickly establishing a dominant monopoly due to their prior acquisition of the planet's most promising locations.

Instrumental in the transition of Makeb from Galactic exile into profitable paradise, House Hylani joined forces with the Avesta family to birth the planet's government, the Makeb Business Council, installing themselves as the Vice-Chair, the power of Makeb only grew over the centuries in part thanks to this union of the world's two most profitable families. Together they rebuffed the attempts of the Hutt Cartel to control them, secured lucrative deals with the Republic, and cemented Makeb as a famed vacation spot Galaxy-wide.

Following the supposed destruction of Makeb by the resurgent Sith Empire in the Old Republic's Cold War, House Hylani would not give up their holdings so easily, having lost what was once theirs on their homeworld and other worlds through generations of distance, they bode their time well, currying favour with the Empire until Makeb could be deemed habitable again. So began the climb to power once more, with a headstart in the remains of their old holdings and fewer rivals than before.

Having survived the turmoil of the last century, weathering the destruction of the Galactic Alliance and fearing the myriad forces that slaver for control of the Galaxy's fractured remains, House Hylani were instrumental in championing a newly galvanised independence movement after their perceived abandonment by the powers that had once been their allies and protectors, overthrowing the Business Council to form a ruling autocracy under the leadership of Chairman Zirin, the House looks westward to the Confederacy for aid, their message of sovereign autonomy resonating with the people, and the collective union of its armies a sought after comfort in such terrible times.

A Halcyon Home:

Born heir to his father’s holdings in the lap of splendid luxury, Zirin’s earliest memories are those of happiness and mirth sequestered away in the palace atop his family’s mesa, his formative years rolling by with relative tranquillity oblivious to the plight of the wider galaxy as he was dressed in finery and tutored by the finest credits could afford. His talents for critical thinking presented themselves early, looking at theoretical issues with an outlook beyond his years, with a passion for mathematics and oration.

It was not until his teens and the rebellious wanderlust of youth did he see the trouble boiling beyond the manicured gardens of his family palace, beyond the azure waters around them. The galaxy was on fire even if his surroundings were blue, and the turmoil would soon grip at his people’s hearts as the threat drew nearer.

Remnants of Empire:

Having curried favour with the Sith to return to Makeb prematurely, and with a history of Sith teachings pervading their once-home in the Tapani Sector, House Hylani possessed a heritage of intermittent Force Sensitivity that emerged in Zirin early. While they had no Jedi or Sith to oversee his tutelage, the family possessed a number of holocrons and treatises from the Sith's former occupation, as well as schematics for Light Foils from their home sector. Zirin was quietly schooled in the rudimentary arts of the Force as well as a focus on Form-II in the Tapani's characteristically aristocratic duelling style, becoming a proficient blades-man even if his abilities in the force never evolved beyond subtle precognition and light telekinesis. They did not wish to attract the attentions of the Empire or Jedi, after all, and were content to simply instil the basics they could in the boy.

Spacers and Stardust:

Spending several years training with the Makeb planetary militia force as was expected of the sons of the Business Council, Zirin’s executive studies at his father’s feet were interspersed with military drills and weapons practice, as war continued to rage in the Core Worlds and tranquillity slipped ever further away. A tour of worlds under the Galactic Alliance showed him the extent of the threat the remnants of the Republic faced from all factions espousing Imperialism and Sith Doctrine, and while Hutt Space formed a buffer from threats to the East, Makeb’s people became ever wary of their position should the Core Worlds truly fall to any one of these aggressively authoritarian regimes.

Makeb was and always had been a bastion of freedom, a place where refugees had made their fortunes isolated from the assistance of the wider galaxy. They had grown alone, and they would continue to survive alone if they must- but even the bravest of citizens feared the shadows that descended upon the Galaxy en-masse.

The time for tranquillity was over.

The Tensions of Tradition:
Back home on Makeb, the social and political climate was beginning to shift, as the people more and more worried for their safety and the sovereignty of the planet in the face of galactic adversity at every turn. The people were restless, angry, terrified, while the Business Council squabbled over petty schemes to ensure that their holdings would survive whatever was to come; some suggested alliance with the Hutts much to public disgust, while others suggested an attachment to the remnants of the Republic.

House Hylani mediated these discussions, espousing their firm stance of independence, of an alliance only on their terms, and sewed the seeds of civil distrust in the populace for the other houses of the Business Council. Hylani had been a part of Makeb since its foundation, and was to the people a beacon of patriotism amidst talks of fracture and submission to the Hutt Cartels.

The Business Council was their hallowed tradition, the formative government of Makeb- yet it became evident in their flailing for an answer to the planet’s future that it was not sufficient. Makeb needed strong rule, decisive rule, and for the people’s fears to be assuaged.

Conglomeration:
After the final fall of the Galactic Alliance and the imminent threat of the Sith Empire looming over the Silver Order and ready to strike, Makeb was ready for change. Galvanised by public sentiments of action, independence, and collectivism- the planet needed a leader of action to guide them through the chaos, and Zirin Hylani stepped into the fray. What began as public oration espousing discontent from within the Business Council soon turned to rallies of nationalist sentiment and dire calls for action.

Down with the Council, the people cried, if it would see Makeb guided to a future of safety, security, and certainty.

Amassing a militia of volunteers, Isotope-5 powered droids, and mercenary armaments, the forces of Zirin’s coup d’état descended upon the Council Hall in Talaos City and rounded up the sitting members of the Business Council. They were each deposed and stripped of their seats, their combined assets seized by the new state conglomerate. Zirin Hylani was named Chairman of Makeb in public address, and the energised populace were keen to enact reform as swiftly as possible.

In the following weeks, the holdings of the other families and native businesses were swiftly seized by the state in the Conglomeration Act, targeting all know Isotope-5 mines and refineries as priority, with resorts not already belonging to House Hylani, and miscellaneous mines and economic centres being the next to be pulled swiftly into the warm embrace of nationalisation.

With the economy in his palm, Zirin began sweeping reforms to shore up Makeb against the coming tides, forming a centralised planetary defence force answering to the office of the Chairman, starting construction on experimental models of Isotope-5 infused droids, weapons, and ships, and tightening regulations at the planet’s borders, Makeb focused inward as it had during its founding days, looking to its resources for protection, while Chairman Hylani considered their position on the galactic stage.

With war coming, Makeb must make allies- but she would do so on her terms now, with the chaff removed from leadership. Never would she bend before Hutts or Empire again.
