When not flooded, the major continent is a marshland that becomes devoted to a variety of wildlife. Under the seas, the surface is jagged and various, resulting in numerous caves

Demonym: Makian
Major cities: Port of Halikalu (Native), Nimatu (Farming center), Reyutali (Research center)
Major imports: Foodstuffs, medicine, derelict starships
Major exports: Seafood, sugar, tropical fruits, tourism, electrical, hydrological and subaquatic research
Affiliation: Confederacy of Independent Systems
Culture: A result of various species fleeing the Plague and other threats to their life, the various species of Makian are traditionally in a near tribal state. The aquatic species live as they would on their traditional homeworlds, under the water, hunting, fishing, and surviving, using derelict starship hulls to create a varied underwater community. The air-breathing species use the derelict hulls to craft a variety of floating and submersible homes for themselves. As a matter of necessity, they have taken to fishing, and during the dry season, growing a variety of crops for to store in their ships to get them through the year.

Twice a year is the festival of ‘Kono y latu’ which is the ‘Joining Ceremony.’ During these two weeks, any warring or distrust is placed aside in order for the various tribes or ships to come together to expand their genetic offerings. During these ceremonies, the opening but cautious island civilizations will allow ships to dock and will share their crops and stories. Even the occasionally warring Mon Cal and Karkarodons lay down arms from one another.

The Joining Ceremony book-ends the dry season on Makai. During this time, the marshland floods cease and the tribe descended from a lost farmer’s colony who arrived in Nimatu, which is near the port city of Halikalu, open their arms to help out the other beings on this world. From here they grow crops, the rare few that are hardy enough to grow in the marshlands and in the abundance of saltwater, share the secrets of hydroponics to any who wish to learn, and begin trade.

Most tribes, especially the ones living on the derelict water vessels have a variety of ceremonies all relating to the same cause. Collectively, they are known as ‘Riding the Storm.’ As Makai is played by intense storms due to the cooling of air around the variety of dome volcanos, atools and marshlands, in order to be seen as an adult, and able to be respected by other ships, or tribes, everyone must go through a storm on a small boat of simple construction, and using their wits and knowledge gained from a life on Makai must survive the storm. When they do so, they are greeted as adults and are allowed an opinion when it comes to what may be best for their unique tribe or ship.

Daily life on Makai is pretty simple, most people are working to survive, assembled of fishing vessels and small tribes. When ships come ashore for the brief times, or run across one another, these are either times for celebration or times for conflict. Certain crews of ships and tribes from the land do not always greet each other with the most open arms, but there are many that will find it time for celebration, and a few days of well deserved hedonism with drinks made of fermented sugar cane, does follow. The world was denoted safe for tourism as the majority of crews and ships will greet each others in such a way. Many more have learned to spot tourist boats, and depending on the situation will gladly accept handouts of trinkets for trade when they come across land.

Certain tribes and crews will have better record keeping than others, and there have been cases were Makian have been able to barter there way off of the world to become spaces and travel the stars. Most tribes and crews were lax on record keeping, and many greet the starships that fly as something unattainable.

Technology: The technology of Makai is all very rudimentary, but important. As the planet does import derelict starship hulls through an agreement with the Confederacy and the Techno Union, the majority of air breathing species live on these vessels. Each are made to be used on the water, and each is unique. Ranging from star yacht to freighter to warship hulls, these are stored in Halikalu, and during the Joining Ceremonies, they are cannibalized for useful parts and the ships are added to. It can be said each ship is a unique work of art.

Barring the research city of Reyutali, the most expansive form of technology is the hydroponic farms that are seen on the larger veseels, as well as the water purification systems.

Reyutali is created in order for the Techno Union to perform research in fields such as hydrology, meteorology, solar power, hydro power, and working with massive amounts of electricity and how to diffuse it with or use it to power their creations.

History: There is no record of history previous to the Gulag Plague, be this because there was no sentient life due to its location along Wild Space, or because all records were lost due to the plague remains to be seen.

Early records are sparse for the world, as most who arrived were refugees or criminals fleeing from political pressures. Finding a world with no infrastructure around had caused many species and beings to settle on the world, converting their starships to sea-faring vessels, or, in the case of the Mon Calamari and Karkarodon who arrived, sinking the vessels entirely and creating their underwater culture. Not much is known on these species as the technology for sustained underwater breathing was never sought after until recent times, on Makai. Sometime within the years between 600 and 650 ABY, the Port of Halikalu was created, and shortly there after the farming center of Nimatu. These existed as a result of not all beings on Makai enjoying the vagarant lifestyle of following the winds and avoiding the storms. The two centers became quickly known the world over and as a result, the Joining Ceremony was created formally.

As a result of the location of Makai near the end of the Corellian Run, there never seems to be a shortage of derelict ships and down on their luck spacers who find the waters of the world a refuge, as such, the population was able to remain nearly steady, from the original colony ships that were fleeing the Core to the Rim.

Sometime after 750 ABY and 800 ABY, an entrepreneur saw the archipelagos and seas of the world for something more than survival, they saw them as a boom for tourism. Creating floating landing pads near Halikalu, and shipping in a variety of seafaring pleasure vessels, the age of tourism had reached Makai. While it did not benefit the natives directly, every so often, there was a careless tourist who would become lost at sea, kidnapped, their starship stolen, or their pleasure vessel overtaken by one tribe or another on the world.

With the resurgence of the Techno Union came the neeed for a dedicated research team, and the hig salt content in the air, mixed with the extreme changes in weather caused the creation of Reyutali in the most recent years. Defended by battle droids, but containing only sentient scientists and researchers, the floating city is reminiscent of the ships used on Makai if following a more patterned approach to its creation.
