Discussion Major Factions, Stellaris Style, Redux

NPC Storyteller
EDIT: I'm a dingdong and hit post accidentally before I was ready.

Four years ago, I thought it would be fun to make Stellaris versions of Chaos's major factions. You can see that here.

A lot has changed since then. Of the twelve major factions at the time, only one still exists today - and that one looks to be in the throes of a major change. I myself haven't posted on Chaos in several years. But I keep an eye on things, because - as frustrated as I get with it - this site was part of my daily routine for years of my life, and I can't quite bring myself to completely look away. So I thought it would be fun to do the Stellaris thing again, updated for the major factions of a new galactic century.

Here's the explanation I wrote up last time, reposted for clarity, before I jump in with the eight major factions of today.

Govenment type is made up of two different calculations: Ethics, which are broad statements about philosophical principles the government follows and/or values, and Civics, which are specific policies the government puts into practice OR specific elements of the faction's culture. Civics are pretty self-explanatory once you see them, and they vary a lot. Ethics might require a bit more explaining. They are based on four different axes. From the Stellaris wiki:
  • The Authoritarian-Egalitarian axis looks at whether the empire's political power belongs in the hands of the few or the many.
  • The Materialist-Spiritualist axis looks at whether the unknowns of the universe can be explained by science or the existence of something greater.
  • The Militarist-Pacifist axis looks at whether the empire's military should be used offensively or strictly defensively.
  • The Xenophile-Xenophobe axis looks at whether alien species and cultures should be embraced or distrusted.
Empires get three Ethics points. This means they can pick three different ethics (for example, Authoritarian, Militarist, and Xenophobe), OR they can spend two points to be Fanatical about one of the ethics, carrying it to an even greater extreme (for example, Materialist and Fanatic Xenophile). Government types are determined based on the blend of Ethics and Civics for each civilization, plus who holds power: many (Democratic), few (Oligarchic), one (Dictatorial), one but with a designated successor (Imperial), or business interests (Corporate).

Like I said last time, if I got your faction wrong, let me know - and explain why - and I'll fix it.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Black Sun Syndicate

Government Type: Crime Syndicate - This government is an enormous and ruthless business syndicate, which shares many of its operating practices with organized crime.

Ethics: Authoritarian, Fanatic Materialist

Authority: Corporate

Civics:
  • Criminal Heritage: This megacorporation can trace its origins back to a crime syndicate that eventually grew powerful enough to supplant all forms of local government.
  • Ruthless Competition: All levels of society in this Megacorporation are constantly vying with each other in ruthless competition. It's a dog-eat-dog world.

-----------------------------------------------------------

The Diarchy

Government Type: Enlightened Monarchy - This government is a hereditary form of enlightened autocracy, where a strong emphasis is put on the knowledge and qualifications of the ruling monarch.

Ethics: Authoritarian, Militarist, Xenophile

Authority: Imperial

Civics:
  • Master Crafters: A penchant for meticulous crafting lies at the heart of this society. Deft appendages and keen sensory organs aid them in creating truly wondrous treasures even in the most basic of trades.
  • Philosopher King: It is not enough to simply rule. The Ship of State must be guided by a king that wields enough wisdom and knowledge to steer it true.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Galactic Alliance

Government Type: Representative Democracy - This government is a representative democracy, where citizens vote on officials who are elected to represent them.

Ethics: Egalitarian, Fanatic Xenophile

Authority: Democratic

Civics:
  • Idealistic Foundation: This society was founded on strong idealistic values. Whether the current government remains true to them or not, the people have not forgotten.
  • Parliamentary System: The parliamentary system in this society encourages a free and lively debate. Currying favor with one of the dominant political factions can prove to be quite advantageous.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Galactic Empire

Government Type: Star Empire - This government is a hereditary and militaristic form of autocracy, with a single sovereign controlling both the government and the military.

Ethics: Fanatic Authoritarian, Militarist

Authority: Imperial

Civics:
  • Byzantine Bureaucracy: This society is largely governed by a complex and, to the outsider, almost labyrinthine system of bureaucracy. An army of officials and functionaries work tirelessly to keep the government running smoothly and ensure no citizens are allocated resources they cannot demonstrate a properly filed and triple-stamped need for.
  • Police State: To quash any traces of dissent, the population in this repressive society is carefully monitored and controlled by a large internal police force.

-----------------------------------------------------------
High Republic

Government Type: Moral Democracy - This government is a pacifistic form of democracy, firmly guided by moralist principles and non-violence.

Ethics: Egalitarian, Pacifist, Xenophile

Authority: Democratic

Civics:
  • Diplomatic Corps: This society has a long tradition of rhetoric and debate and celebrate those who are able to get their way using only words.
  • Free Haven: This society has a well-earned reputation as a free haven. The tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free - all are welcome here, regardless of their species or origin.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Imperial Confederation

Government Type: Military Dictatorship - This government is a militaristic form of autocracy, with the ruler serving as the undisputed head of the military which is firmly in control of the state apparatus.

Ethics: Authoritarian, Materialist, Militarist

Authority: Dictatorial

Civics:
  • Corvée System: This society considers it the absolute right of the state to decide where its citizens live and work.
  • Distinguished Admirality: The Fleet and the Admiralty have unusually prominent roles in this society, wielding a great deal of influence in political circles. They have the pick of the litter when it comes to new military recruits.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Mandalorian Empire

Government Type: Martial Empire - This government is a militaristic form of hereditary autocracy, where the state exists largely to support the military. Martial ability is highly valued, and all citizens are regularly drilled in matters of war.

Ethics: Authoritarian, Fanatic Militarist

Authority: Imperial

Civics:
  • Memorialists: This empire pays tribute to memories and sapients of the past, deriving greater stability and insight from the continuous cycles of death, rebirth and legacy.
  • Warrior Culture: This society has developed into a hardy warrior culture. Martial prowess is valued above all else, and true glory can only be found on the field of battle.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Sith Order

Government Type: Divine Empire - This government is a form of spiritualistic autocracy. Everything is shaped by the official state religion, and the ruler is worshiped as an infallible living god.

Ethics: Authoritarian, Spiritualist, Xenophobe

Authority: Imperial

Civics:
  • Efficient Bureaucracy: This society is renowned for its efficiency. Not only do the mag-trains run on time, but the colossal bureaucratic apparatus required to run an interstellar nation has been greatly streamlined.
  • Imperial Cult: This society has a dominant state religion where the ruler is worshiped as a living deity.
