Description:
The MARC is a mammoth of a cannon. So large in fact that the weapon is typically required to be built into the ship's superstructure. Only the largest of ships, 800+ meters, are capable of mounting a turret version.
The MARC functions like any rail gun, super conductive electromagnetic rails propel the round forward. The shear size of the weapon ensures the round leaves the barrel tremendous speed, 25km per second. This translates into an impact unlike anything seen by the average rail weapon. There is a drawback to this massive speed and power, should the MARC be fired in atmosphere the velocity of the shot will literally rip the slug apart after exiting the barrel.
Because of the immense calculation required to fire a solid, unguided round at targets so far away a droid targeting computer is required. Capital Ships don't often engage in dogfights. Thousands, even hundreds of thousands of kilometers separate ships in the average skirmish. The droid targeting computer makes miniscule adjustments to the the ship's position allowing for precision firing.
The weapon relies on an automated system of lifts and conveyors to move each round from the munitions bay to the barrel. As the round is moved the weapon's capacitors begin a recharge cycle. From firing to reload and recharge, the weapon is able to fire again in six seconds.
