- Canon: N/A
- Permissions: N/A
- Links: Epica (Planet Sub)
- Name: Luchtaire
- Designation: Non-sentient
- Origins: Epica
- Average Lifespan: 10-30 years (dependant on predation)
- Estimated Population: Planetary
- Description: An equine species noted by its long horns and tail, the Luchtaire are a common species of wild & domesticated animals on Epica. The species is generally well-tempered & docile unless threatened. They possess four eyes and a beaked mouth.
- Breathes: Type I
- Average Height of Adults: 1.5 m
- Average Length of Adults: 4.25 m
- Skin color: Tan
- Hair color: Tan, black, or rust colored; Grey or white feathering (fur around hooves)
- Distinctions: These equines are noted mostly by their long tail and horns. There is some dimorphism, with males tending to get a rusty color, but this isn’t a hard and fast rule which only makes it mostly reliable. Their beaks are quite strong, and allow them to feed on tougher vegetation. Female Luchtaires are smaller in size compared to males, and generally have shorter horns.
- Races: None
- Force Sensitivity: Standard
- Fast runners, and even faster sprinters.
- Beak for eating tough vegetation.
- Combination of binocular and side vision.
- Intelligent
- Trainable
- Like other equines, leg injury is almost a sure death sentence.
- The horns are more for display. While they can be used defensively, they can be fragile.
- They can only run at top speed in short sprints.
- Without training, they can be skittish and will flee when spooked by predators, loud noises, or sudden movement.
- Diet: Herbivore
- Communication: Combination of sharp exhaling and body language from ears and tail.
- Technology level: None
- Religion/Beliefs: None
- General behavior: Generally herding animals that rely on numbers and speed to avoid predators. They are easily domesticated, and generally docile, if easily spooked.
A fairly common sight on Epica, the Luchtaire are an equine species that are often ridden by the population of the planet. They can be found roaming the wild plains & forests in packs of 5 - 20, with the young staying close to their mothers. Males can become aggressive if threatened, but only if they have no other alternative (such as fleeing).
While some wealthy residents of Epica prefer to import equine species such as horses, most people tend to prefer the native Luchtaire for their grace, unusual appearance, and ease of acquisition. There is a thriving breeding & trade industry that has built up around them, with some particularly savvy breeders even engaging in selective breeding to bring out (or diminish) certain traits. Luchtaires have also been seen on the highly profitable racing circuit, but these animals typically have had their horns sanded down to keep from injuring other animals or riders. These are different than typical animal races though, focusing mostly on the Luchtaire's natural bursts of speed, with short, straight line races, not dissimilar to swoop bike drag racing.
