DESCRIPTION

A tiny, floating probe droid, the Hellwasp is at first unassuming in appearance. Small enough to fit into the palm of most humanoid hands, it offers a wide range of useful functions for soldiers in the field.

In its default form, the Hellwasp resembles a simple metallic orb, topped with a glowing photoreceptor. When activated, the machine floats into the air and begins to reconnoiter the surrounding area. Powerful omnidirectional laser spectrographs build a real-time 3-D map of the droid's immediate surroundings, transmitting this data back to the photoreceptors of nearby friendly droids. This is particularly effective in battle, as it allows Helix droids to spot hostiles behind cover or other forms of physical concealment. It will continue its scouting behavior until recalled, until which time it will zip back to whomever deployed it.

When used indoors, this provides Helix forces with an on-demand map of the area, including nearby (uncloaked) threats, points of interest, and alternate entrances/exits. When used outdoors, the droid will map out to a preset distance, then return to avoid getting lost.

While the drone itself is uncloaked, it is small, quick, silent, and programmed with an excellent capacity for avoiding notice. In a pinch, it can power down, remain still, and camouflage itself in dark corners or other areas away from general view.

Optionally, the drone can be configured to attack any hostiles it encounters while scouting. When it spots an enemy, the droid unfurls a series of hidden side panels, which morph into a quartet of spinning, wing-like blades. These whirl at enormous RPM along the drone's lateral axis, allowing it to lacerate enemies and shred most lighter armors. A group of Hellwasp drones can reduce even large enemies to an unpleasant paste in short order. While normally silent in operation, these weaponized wings create an angry buzz-hum, leading to the droids' common name.

The drones are as nasty on the attack as they are unassuming in stealth, using their exceptional speed and small size to great advantage. They can be infuriatingly difficult to strike or shoot, darting in to slice an enemy before flickering back out of range.

More unpleasantly, the drones have been known to imbed themselves in a target before turning their bladed exterior to maximum. Needless to say, few beings fare well with an angry, animate saw blade clinging to their entrails.

Should an enemy land a solid hit, however, the drone will almost certainly be destroyed. Though somewhat armored, they are built more for alacrity than durability, and at best can only survive a glancing impact.
