Long-range assault concussion missile

Here my objective would be to dev a long-range assault concussion missile launcher. Unfortunately missiles that big have to be mounted on heavy cruisers or larger, and also count for a large number of capital guns (ca. 140 or so).

Also the resulting long-range assault concussion missile launcher would be a MIRV kind of assault concussion missile (7 warheads, each of which have the power of a heavy concussion missile apiece).

Only restriction: no overt dark-siders...

Technically speaking, when it runs out of fuel it can no longer "maneuver/track" and just flies in a straight line. So making a "long-range" missile, would theoretically, I think, imply it's going to have a larger than normal fuel supply so that it can be directed at greater range without turning into a straight line projectile?

Aye, but at a greater range, a straight line projectile, with no maneuvering capability, is easy to swat out of the "sky" so to speak. But yeah, if they're used properly, you could predict trajectory and all that without making a "long-range missile." Same principle as using, say, a gauss/rail gun.

Most Assault missiles aren't straight line weapons though, in a 360 degree battlefield they would be useless if so. (Not sure if you knew that but you keep mentioning them.)

All and all, i see the prospect of a truly long range missile, but boy would it be costly.

That's exactly my point. I believe she's trying to make a missile that has enough fuel to be fired at a really large range and maintain maneuverability. Taking into account the principles of real life missiles, they do have an effective range, after which they become "dead stick" and drop out of the sky. In space, when they go "dead stick" they just continue on the same trajectory they were already on.

So I think she's just trying to make one with a larger fuel capacity, really.

And yeah, it would be expensive as heck.

So I can't speak for all fleeters here, but I've always assumed the Assault Warheads are already long-range weapons, but that firing them at that range exposes them to a lot of potential defensive fire. Risk/reward trade off basically.

Long Range as a modifier has traditionally given extra range, x2 firepower, and x5 cost. So you're looking at 100 Turbolasers for a single heavy warhead launcher that can be shot down and necessarily fires slowly.

From my perspective, there's not a particularly compelling reason to take one of those over a Long Range HVC, which is already a colossal shipkiller of a weapon.

This ain't a perfect 100% analysis, but that's my initial reaction.

[member="Cyrus Tregessar"] With MIRVs you can aim an assault concussion missile worth 140 capital guns at a cluster of ships, whereas her long-range HVC (380mm in caliber) can only be aimed at one ship at a time.

That's the reason behind the MIRVs, each of which have homing abilities.
