OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
- Intent: To create a plant cultivar that can be used for armor and frameworks
- Image Credit: Lignum vitae (Wikipedia)
- Canon: N/A
- Permissions: N/A
- Links: veshok, lignum vitae
- Name: Lignis ferra
- Origins: Veshok species from Mandalore, altered by Sylva Vitae
- Other Locations: N/A
- Classification: Hardwood tree
- Average Growth Cycle: 6 months from seed to harvestable & mature; can live for hundreds of years
- Viability: Requires a ‘standard’ biome for trees. Yavin 4, Mandalore, Endor, etc. are possible and viable locations. Increased nutrient & water intake allows for rapid growth.
- Description: The L. ferra tree is a dark brown tree, with thick hardy leaves and extremely dense wood. The rough bark is only surface-deep; beneath it is tough, dense, slightly aromatic wood.
- Average Height: 50-200 m tall
- Average Length: 4-9 m diameter trunk, branches can spread to be 40-150 m wide
- Color: Dark brown bark, brownish-tan wood, green leaves that turn reddish in the winter season
- Nutritional Value: None
- Toxicity: None
- Other Effects: The wood is extremely dense and requires specially hardened tools to harvest. When carved into thin strips, can be used as a slightly aromatic incense.
- Distinctions: A much faster-growing species of veshok, the L. ferra tree is designed to increase the yield and strength without compromising durability or regenerative properties. Not compatible with veshok trees, it requires its own species to reproduce.
- Significantly faster & more productive growth
- Durable & adaptable to most tree-hospitable environments
- Not biologically compatible with normal veshok trees
- Without careful cultivation, can quickly outgrow itself and consume itself in search of nutrient deposits
- A smaller ecological niche means it is more difficult to grow in extreme environments than other hardwood trees
In Jack’s exploration of the galaxy’s flora, he happened across the veshok species on Mandalore. Carefully transplanting a few saplings & seeds, he decided to engineer it to allow for increased yield and tougher wood. While the finished product is by and large not too different from the veshok tree itself, this is Jack’s personal cultivar that he will be using for the foreseeable future.
