It was a good idea.

Itz was the kind of girl smart enough to do something like that. Seek out help. Or maybe she fell into a trap like the one they'd just been in. Which meant, she'd be at the village anyway. Right now that was all she and Jackson had to go on. And with the sound of that trap going off behind them, she knew the pirates were closing in.

"Alright. Let's go." She began descending the steep, rocky path as it lead back down. Trying to be careful. She could feel the rough rock scape up her palms. But she didn't let it slow her down. "And Jackson," she called over her shoulder. "I'm Corellian is not an excuse," a mild huff. "Maybe you should keep that in mind for the next girl."

He wouldn't see the slight smirk that curled up the side of her mouth.

Up ahead the path ended and it looked like they would have to cross the river to get to the village. At least the current didn't look too fast here.

Jackson followed after her down the rocky path, placing his boots carefully enough that he did not send loose stones tumbling toward her. Her answer earned a quiet laugh from him, along with a shake of his head.

"Hey, I was just trying to lighten the mood. And being Corellian explains plenty, actually."

Then the rest of what she said caught up with him.

"Maybe you should keep that in mind for the next girl."

Jackson watched her descend ahead of him for a moment, unable to see the smirk that had curled at the corner of her mouth. He had already noticed that Soph was pretty. Anyone with working eyes could manage that much. Something about the way she carried herself out here, though, even after the crash and everything that had followed, pushed the thought a little further. She was beautiful. Maybe that meant he ought to take her warning a little more seriously than he had been.

The thought survived for all of a couple seconds before Jackson's expression twisted into mock offense.

"Hey, what do you mean, next girl?"

He smirked as he said it and quickened his pace enough to close some of the distance between them. There was curiosity buried beneath the sarcasm, but Jackson was perfectly content to leave that part alone. If Soph wanted to accuse him of flirting, he could live with it. He had been trying to keep things light.

Mostly.

The rocky trail eventually leveled out near the river, and Jackson's attention shifted back toward why they were out here in the first place. The village sat on the opposite side, close enough now that they could finally see where they were going instead of relying on guesswork and jungle trails. The current looked manageable at this part of the river, which was the first bit of luck they had been handed in a while.

"Village it is, then."

A noise from farther up the trail pulled his attention away from the river. Jackson turned and spotted movement between the trees they had just left behind. One of the pirates stepped through the brush and stopped when he saw them. For an awkward second, Jackson and the man simply looked at each other while both seemed to process exactly what had happened.

"Oh, crap."

The pirate shouted back toward the jungle.

Jackson immediately looked at Soph. "Okay. Yeah. We should hurry."

More voices answered from somewhere behind the first man, and Jackson resisted the instinct to reach for his lightsaber. Fighting them was an option, but it was not why they were here. They still needed to find Itz, and getting pinned down on the wrong side of the river by a group of pirates seemed like an excellent way to make that harder.

"Preferably before we actually have to fight them."

Jackson moved toward the bank with Sophelia and stepped into the water first. The cold reached nearly to his knees, but the riverbed beneath his boots felt solid and the current was not strong enough to threaten his balance. He made it several steps before turning toward her, keeping one eye on the trail behind them as another distant shout carried through the trees.

"Current's fine," he said, holding a hand toward her. His grin returned despite the pirates closing in behind them, a few blaster bolts nearly missing them. "Buuuuuuuuut I'm thinking now would be a really good time to move."

"Hey, what do you mean, next girl?"
She didn’t turn around. Or explain. He knew what she meant. That smile curled on her lips until sounds of the pirates closing in came from behind them. Head whipped to Jackson, already in the river as a red bolt peppered the rock next to her toe.

She didn’t need anymore encouragement.

She plunged into that water. A light sniff at his offered hand. Ignoring it.

“I’m not scared of water, Lesan.” Bolts hit around them. Sizzling and disappearing with angry hisses as they hit that wet surface.

“Swim!” She encouraged and dove under. Knowing it would be faster than wading. She’d grown up on an ocean world. This was her playground. Granted, that had been beautiful sparkling oceans. This was a disgusting jungle river.

Water snob?

Absolutely.

Arms pulled and legs kicked as she glided beneath the water’s murky surface toward that opposite shore. Head lifted, glancing back once to make sure Jackson was okay. Pirates were already making it closer to the beach they’d just left. She felt a prickle of danger through the force. One that wasn’t coming from the beach.

And then she saw it.

A massive slithering bulk gliding in the water toward Jackson.

“Look out!” She yelled and pointed.

Jackson looked at his empty hand after Sophelia looked at it and plunged past him into the river.

"I wasn't implying you were scared of water."

He had just enough time to watch her disappear beneath the murky surface before another blaster bolt struck close enough to spray warm river water across his face.

"Apparently I'm scared of getting shot, though."

That settled the matter.

Jackson pushed forward and dove beneath the surface after her. The water was cloudy enough that visibility disappeared after only a few meters, forcing him to rely more on the direction of the current and the pale shape of the opposite bank than anything beneath him. Sophelia was faster in the water. Considerably faster, actually. Jackson noticed that much almost immediately and decided he was not particularly interested in turning the middle of a blaster-filled river into a competition.

Blaster bolts punched into the river behind them. Their red glow flashed through the murk before disappearing in violent bursts of steam and bubbles. Jackson surfaced for air and heard shouting from the bank they had abandoned. The pirates were getting closer, spreading out along the shoreline now that they had a clear shot at the two Padawans trying to cross.

He turned toward the opposite bank and heard Sophelia yell.

"Look out!"

Jackson saw where she was pointing, as the warning reached him through the Force.

Something was wrong beneath the water.

The sensation rolled through him with enough force that Jackson stopped swimming. It was not the sharp danger of a blaster bolt or the deliberate hostility coming from the pirates behind them. This felt older and simpler. Hunger. Territory. The instinct of something that had been watching movement in its river and had finally decided to investigate.

"Oh, you've got to be kidding me."

The water beside Jackson bulged.

A massive head broke through the surface.

The creature rose higher than Jackson expected, dragging several meters of thick, scaled body out of the river behind it. It looked like some monstrous river serpent, its hide patterned in muddy greens and dark brown that had made it almost impossible to distinguish from the water below. A broad jaw opened to reveal rows of hooked teeth, while a pair of black eyes fixed directly on him.

Jackson had apparently become lunch.

A blaster bolt streaked past his shoulder and slammed into the creature's neck. The serpent recoiled with a violent hiss. Jackson blinked. For once, the pirates had helped.

"Okay. Thanks!"

Another bolt struck the water barely a meter from his head.

"Never mind!"

The river exploded into chaos.

The wounded creature thrashed, sending a wave rolling outward hard enough to knock Jackson sideways. He disappeared beneath the surface, caught himself with a frantic kick, and broke through again with water running down his face. The serpent had turned toward the bank where the blaster fire originated, but another shot caught its side and drove it into an even greater frenzy.

Jackson reached for his lightsaber.

He stopped.

Igniting it while half submerged seemed like one of those ideas that would earn a lengthy lecture later, assuming he survived long enough to receive it. More importantly, the creature was not their mission. Neither were the pirates.

"Soph!"

Jackson spotted her closer to the far bank and started swimming toward her as another volley crossed over the river. He ducked instinctively when one passed overhead.

"We are definitely not fighting this thing!"

The serpent's tail broke the surface behind him and came down with enough force to throw water several meters into the air. Jackson felt the Force flare again and twisted away before the wake could catch him squarely. He drove himself forward, arms cutting through the river as quickly as he could manage.

A dark shape moved beneath him.

Jackson's eyes widened.

"Nope."

He kicked harder.

The creature surged upward again between them and the pirates, its massive body twisting as another blaster bolt struck its scales. Jackson almost felt bad for it. Almost. That sympathy became considerably more difficult when its head swung back toward him and its jaws opened again.

Jackson threw one hand forward.

The Force slammed into the serpent's head before it could strike, shoving the creature sideways rather than trying to overpower its entire weight. The effort bought him a few precious seconds, and Jackson used every one of them to close the remaining distance toward the opposite shore.

He caught sight of Sophelia again.

"C'mon that will slow the pirates down better than any trap could."

She'd reached the far bank first., waiting in ankle deep water anxiously. Azure gaze keeping a close eye on Jackson and that snake-like beast. The force gathered around her. Ready.

But she held.

Especially, when she saw that serpent lock its gaze on the pirates at the beach. Dipping its head beneath the waters, it shot forward toward them and the beach. This time Soph held her hand out to Jackson, to help him up and out of the water - if he took it.

"Come on." The serpent behind them roared and lashed its head at the pirates on the beach. She heard yells but she didn't wait to see what was happening. She was already running into the jungle. There was no path here. She could only guess if they were going the right way to the village. Vines and branches scraped at her clothes and skin, threatening to tangle in her hair. But she pushed forward.

She hated every moment of it.

She felt disgusting.

Everything was out of order.

She hoped Itz was alive.

Slowling down, she crouched, hands falling to her thighs as she tried to catch her breath. Taking in that thick air through her lungs. "I....think....one of us....should climb a tree and make sure we're.....headed the right....way." More breaths between. Then she straightened, and looked upward.

Jackson reached the shallows just as the serpent turned its attention back toward the pirates. Blaster fire and shouting carried across the river behind him while the creature tore through the water in the opposite direction. When Sophelia held out her hand, Jackson glanced at it, then up at her. A smirk pulled at one corner of his mouth before he gave her a quick wink and planted his own hand against the muddy bank.

"I got it."

He hauled himself out and followed her into the jungle before the pirates could recover from their new problem. Vines dragged at his clothes, branches slapped against his shoulders, and every few steps some half-buried root tried to catch his boot. By the time Sophelia slowed to catch her breath, Jackson was feeling the weight of the crash again too, though he had been doing a decent job ignoring it.

Then she said one of them should climb a tree.

Jackson looked from Sophelia to the branches overhead and back again. He knew exactly what "one of us" meant. "Right. One of us." The smirk returned as he stepped toward the trunk. "Wouldn't want you to break a nail."

He let out an exasperated sigh and reached for the first branch, and the movement pulled sharply through his side. Jackson winced and immediately caught his ribs with one hand, holding still until the pain eased enough for him to breathe normally again. Apparently the crash had not stopped being a problem just because the jungle had supplied pirates and a giant river serpent to distract him from it.

Jackson looked up at the tree again, then over at Sophelia. "Still climbing it." There was enough stubbornness in his tone to make it clear the injury had not changed his mind.

He took a slower breath and started upward, choosing his holds with more care than he would have if his ribs were not protesting every stretch. The lower branches were thick enough to support him, but the canopy above tangled together in a mess of broad leaves and hanging vines that made it difficult to see much of anything beyond the next few meters. Jackson kept climbing until he found a fork sturdy enough to brace himself against and finally pushed through the last curtain of leaves.

The view changed immediately.

From up there, the jungle stopped feeling endless. The river cut through the trees behind them, flashes of red blaster fire still visible near the bank where the pirates had been delayed. Farther ahead, the canopy dipped into a shallow valley before rising again around a cluster of structures half-hidden by the vegetation.

Jackson narrowed his eyes.

"There you are."

The village was not far, but they had been drifting too far east. If they had kept moving in the direction they were going, they would have missed it entirely and probably wandered deeper into the jungle before realizing it. Jackson shifted carefully against the branch and looked for something they could use as a landmark from the ground.

A split-trunk tree stood above the surrounding canopy with pale bark and wide leaves. Beyond it, he could just make out what looked like smoke or cooking fires rising through the trees near the village.

Jackson glanced down through the branches toward Sophelia. "We were close, but we're off." He pointed through the canopy even though he doubted she could see exactly what he meant from below. "Village is northwest from here. There's a big pale tree with two trunks about halfway there. If we aim for that, we should be able to keep the right direction."

He was about to start climbing down when something else caught his attention.

Movement below the canopy, farther ahead.

Jackson leaned slightly to one side and immediately regretted it when his ribs reminded him that leaning was currently a terrible idea. He sucked in a breath and steadied himself before looking again. The movement was gone, but near the base of the split-trunk tree he could see a narrow break through the undergrowth that did not look entirely natural like something had passed through recently.

Jackson frowned.

"Soph."

His voice had lost some of the teasing edge now.

"There's something else."

He scanned the break again, trying to decide whether he was looking at an animal path, villagers moving through the jungle, or something more recent.

"Looks like somebody pushed through the brush between us and the village. Could be nothing, but it cuts almost straight toward it."

That was enough for Jackson.

He started down, moving slower than he had climbed. His ribs pulled again when he dropped to a lower branch, and he muttered something under his breath before finally reaching the last few meters. Rather than risk another hard jolt, Jackson lowered himself carefully and dropped the remaining distance to the jungle floor.

The landing still hurt.

He winced and pressed a hand against his side, waiting until the sharpness faded before looking toward Sophelia.

"Good news, we're not lost."

A beat passed while his smirk returned.

"Yet."

Jackson nodded toward the direction he had seen from above.

"Village is that way. There's also something that looks like a trail, or at least where somebody went through recently." His expression became more serious as he looked through the jungle ahead. "If Itz made it this far, maybe it's hers."

He started toward the break in the vegetation, slower at first while he watched the ground for signs they were actually following something and not just forcing a pattern onto random jungle growth. A snapped branch hung low over the route, and several broad leaves had been bent back in the same direction. Jackson crouched briefly beside one of them.

"...or whoever found her first."
