SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Can be created from any sort of kyber crystal
  • Contains the soul of at least one dead Force User
    • Most crystals contain one 'soul'
    • Potency increases with the number of souls contained in a crystal
    • Potency increases with the relative Force power of a soul
  • Able to channel Force Energies
  • Only able to channel so much energy during a certain period of time before crystal volatility reaches unstable proportions
    • Allowing crystal to 'rest' or 'recharge' will restore crystal stability
  • Physical size of crystal is irrelevant to ability to channel
STRENGTHS
  • Soul Crystal: The Kyr'lyatr Crystal contains the spirit of a dead Force User -- this allows the crystal to directly harness and channel the energies of the Living and Cosmic Force.
  • Kyber: A Kyr'lyatr Crystal retains all the functions and properties of a standard Kyber crystal, although using a Kyr'lyatr Crystal for any of those purposes would be innefficient, as standard Kyber is much more plentiful.
WEAKNESSES
  • Scarcity: A Kyr'lyatr is extremely hard to procure. Most crystals are found in the netherworld, an alternate dimension of the dead where souls are plentiful, but one that is hard to navigate or even access. In realspace, Kyr'lyatr can be found in Force Nexuses, although finding them in such places is much more rare.
  • Volatility: The Kyr'lyatr cannot endlessly channel the force without interruption without risking irreversible instability of the crystal; it can only be used intermittently if the crystal is to stay intact.
  • Force Nullification: The ability of the Kyr'lyatr to channel Force Energies is affected by both abilities, places, and technologies that enhance or obstruct Force usage.
DESCRIPTION
"In the religions of the Jetii, to exist after death is to retain one's individualism and being after becoming One with the Force, or so they call it in their lore. The Kyr'lyatr is a perversion of this, for where the Jetii pass on, this crystal serves more as a prison, entrapping that spirit and feeding off of its latent power to channel energies of the Force. Curiously, every time the crystal is pushed to the limit in terms of its ability to channel the Force, its volatility and instability increases drastically, almost as if the soul inside was yearning to break free from its crystalline cage. Whatever the case may be, the souls of dead sorcerers are of no concern; for in the hands of our people, their spirits become a weapon against them."
- Text from an ancient Forgemaster Manuscript concerning the Kyr'lyatr Crystal

The Kyr'lyatr Crystal is an extremely rare, powerful, and mysterious variant of the Kyber Crystal. It is not known the exact mechanisms through which one is created, but they can be guessed at. In its essence, the Kyr'lyatr is a kyber crystal in which the soul, spirit, or whatever appropriate term for the individual being of a deceased Force user is called, is stored. It can be assumed that this union is involuntary, as most crystals are found in the Netherworld where souls are plentiful and alive Force Users aren't; but ancient texts hint that the process can also be replicated to create the crystal through artificial or alchemical means.

The Kyr'lyatr crystal serves very much as a prison for these souls, through which the crystal can channel the energies of the Living and Cosmic Force. Artificial stimuli notwithstanding, this means that Non-Force Users have the potential to wield Force abilities, albeit in a somewhat limited capacity. The Kyr'lyatr crystal cannot channel Force Energies uninterrupted for endless amounts of time, less the crystal break itself. It can only channel Force Energies for a short period of time before it must stop to restore stability. It is speculated that this is due to the channeling of Force Energies strengthening the spirit within, which, yearning to be free, tries to break out of its bondage. Whatever the case, only brief periods of usage mitigates this.

While extremely potent, the Kyr'lyatr is extremely difficult to procure. Most specimens are found in the Netherworld, an alternate plane of reality that is not easily accessed; other sources include Force Nexuses, although finding Kyr'lyatr at a Force Nexuses is almost just as difficult as finding them in the Netherworld, as they are much rarer in the realspace location. Kyr'lyatr are sometimes confused with Artusian Crystals, for their similar properties, but Artusian Crystals are purely artificial in terms of their creation while Kyr'lyatr are naturally-occuring for the most part. As it channels Force Energies, accordingly the crystal is effected by abilties, locations, or technologies that enhance or obstruct Force usage.

Altogether the Kyr'lyatr is an extremely rare yet extremely potent material, able to create some of the most intriguing and inventive instruments in the Galaxy.
