DESCRIPTION

The Knights of the Blessed Lady are a chivalric, military order founded by Vaena Cadalthor and her companions. Their stated purpose is to provide protection as well as medical care for fellow Asurans, especially the poor and sick. Members of the group are required to believe in the Universal Mother Ashira. With the desolation of Kaeshana, the Eldorai are increasingly scattered. Vaena, while a royalist and a legitimist, finds herself disenchanted with the politics at the royal court of the Eldorai Matriarchy, as well as the nation's dependence on Firemane.

A devout, if somewhat eccentric follower of the Church of Ashira, she has founded the Order to safeguard Ashiran teachings and the faithful. In one hand, it holds the Book of Light, but in the other the Sarix. Vaena is the matriarch of an influential Eldorai noble family, so she has the resources to fund this endeavour. Moreover, she controls a worldship for the group to operate out of.

The Knights have set up a series of waystations, outposts and hospices to provide aid and protection to travelling Asurans. Vaena has stipulated a pan-Ashiran belief system, so they are supposed to strive to extend their protection to fellow elves like Xioquo, Qadiri and Vashyada as well as Eldorai. The Knights combines the traits of a chivalric, military order with that of a humanitarian medical organisation and a governing entity. At the moment the group is relatively small, and often on the move. Several Eldorai who do not fit into the established groups have found a home here, provided they are believers.

The Knights have built ties to Eldorai military colonies - settlements founded by honourably discharged Eldorai veterans. These have provided a pool of recruits and trainers. The group acknowledges the authority of the Eldorai Matriarchy. Indeed, Knights swear an oath on the Goddess and the Queen. But in practice it is autonomous. At the moment the Knights have a minor ability to construct arms and repair or build ships. They have also dabbled into alchemical crafting, since some priestesses with an interest in sorcerous practices have joined it.

RATIONALE

Founded by Vaena after she had largely consolidated her position as Duchess. The conservative, pious noblewoman found herself disgruntled with the scheming at the Eldorai court, the passivity of the liberal Star Queen, and the ignorant xenophobia of the ultra-conservatives. In her view, the true word of the Goddess was being lost in this new, supposedly enlightened age. Meanwhile, the Eldorai had become all too dependent on foreign succour and too quick to turn to foreigners for aid instead of relying on themselves.

Thus she founded the Knights. It began with a call to arms - to the faithful, to former comrades in the Angelii and the regular Eldorai army, to freed Qadiri and Xioquo slaves. Even to the Forsaken who had been abandoned on broken Kaeshana so many years ago, and soldiers from the penal legions who had served their time. They need only have faith in the Goddess. They offer protection, healing and a cause. It helped that Vaena had a fairly Spartan life style, so she could actually invest the wealth she had inherited in productive endeavours rather than spend it on frivolities. The group has salvaged mothballed ships and acquired other vessels through trade deals and raiding actions.
