Vaena Askari

Name: Host Leader Vaena Askari. Askari means 'soldier' in Eldarai. It was the name she adopted after joining the Angelii.
Faction: Eldorai Matriarchy
Rank: Spellweaver, Duchess, former Angelii Host Leader.
Age: 59
Height: 182 cm
Weight: 62 kg
Species: Eldorai
Force-Sensitive: Yes.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Powerful pyromancer abilities. Skilled duellist especially using Sarix and shield. Trained in the use of a lightsabre. Absolutely loyal to the Eldorai Matriarchy and the Angelii. Skilled in command on the tactical level.

Weaknesses:
Headstrong, suffers from the usual Eldorai racial weaknesses. She is still only an Eldorai and thus has the weaknesses commonly associated with her race: High metabolism, a lower pain threshold than humans and inferior strength. Moreover, she is a tactical, not a strategic leader. She has limited skill with ranged weapons. Limited skill with ranged weapons and as a pilot or vehicle driver. More progressive than many Eldorai, but still wedded to rather conservative religious and political views.

Personality: In contrast to her superior Kaida Taldir, Vaena is rather personable and more approachable, at least amongst Angelii. Can be amusingly crude and fond of bawdy jokes. Has a good singing voice and is fond of Angelii battle songs. In stressful situations or combat she becomes extremely focused. Very loyal to the Eldorai Church of Light, the Star Queen and her Angelii battle sisters. However, she's more reserved and less trusting when in the presence of nobles or non-Eldorai. Due to being raised in a temple orphanage, Askari is very religious and can be a bit preachey sometimes. She embraces the Angelii's official role as holy warriors, though she went through a crisis of faith during the Exodus and Kaeshana's cataclysmic destruction.

She is the bastard daughter of a noblewoman and a cousin of Tarissa Cadalthor, Duchess of Galandrona. Both Tarissa and Vaena are aware of one another, but do not socialise or get on. Both are very religious and patriotic, but Tarissa is a highly ambitious aristocrat, whereas Vaena sees herself as a soldier. All in all, Vaena feels rather jaded where her illustrious relatives are concerned and doesn't see them as her family. Her true family are the Angelii, which is why she's fiercely loyal to them. To a degree, she resents those who were born to wealth and privilege without having earned it. This is probably due to her problematic history with her birth family. She respects those who worked their way up. This is one of the reasons why she's loyal to the Queen despite disagreeing with a number of her liberal reforms. The relationship between Askari and Kaida can be described as that of vitriolic best buds.

Equipment:: Sarix, Sarzmigar or lightsabre. Usually protects herself with a Taegis or Seraph shield. Commonly wears the Sentinel Battle Armour or, more rarely, the Seraphim Assault Armour against lightsabre-wielders. Moreover, she is a strong Sciian, or Force-user. She is able to summon flames or heat and tear enemies apart with a combination of telekinesis and fire. Carries a blaster or bolt pistol as backup due to regulations, but she disdains ranged weapons as crude and primitive.

Skills:

  • Strong pyromancy skills. Thanks to this power she can summon flames, heat objects by touch, burn opponents and cook dinner without an oven!
  • Significant dexterity and agility using the Force.
  • Skilled in the use of melee weapons
  • Singing
Backstory:

Eldorai nobles love petty intrigues. Perhaps to an almost unhealthy degree. Byzantine machinations come to them as naturally as breathing. Though she was unaware of her heritage for her long time, Vaena Askari is a noble by birth, though she was disinherited even before being born. Her mother was Mylea Cadalthor, an aunt of Tarissa Cadalthor, who's an influential duchess today. However, Vaena's conception was an accident. Her father was not someone who'd be considered an 'appropriate' match for an Eldorai matriarch, but an 'unsuitable, low class male'. The Eldorai have reluctantly become less misandrist over time, but Vaena was born in a less enlightened age. The union between Mylea and her lover was not one of love and fuzzy feelings. He was simply one of many lovers the woman liked to induldge her desires with. Her dalliances were nothing out of the ordinary for an Eldorai noblewoman and would have been ignored, if she had not ended up pregnant.

By the standards of House Cadalthor, this constituted a scandal and produced a rather awkward situation. Mylea tried to 'rid' herself of the incovenient child by seeking out a priestess, but unfortunately for her one of her handmaidens was a friend of Tarissa, who informed her mother, the clan matriarch Mikela. Vaena's father, who had already suffered Mylea's wrath, was punished harshly for his 'crime'. Good taste and decency forbid going into detail, but suffice to say Eldorai can more than match the worst Sith in cruelty and viciousness. Mylea was shamed and Mikela used this to weaken her position in the clan council and eventually take complete control. This left the question of how to deal with the unwanted child. The fact that she was an illegitimate child did not necessarily mean she could not inherit her mother's titles and estates. However, Mikela wanted to ensure that her bloodline would dominate and thus the clan council decreed that she should be disinherited and sent to an orphanage. Tarissa might have persuaded the family oracle to have an appropriate vision. This would be very ironic since shortly thereafter Tarissa and her mother began to quarrel.

Either way, Vaena would be raised in an orphanage of the Temple of Ashira far away from the capital. Far from the palaces with their silk sheets, golden goblets and intrigues, she was brought up in an environment that was Spartan, but probably a more loving and caring, though it was also characterised by harsh discipline.

The orphanage was run by Ashiran priestesses and very regimented. The girls were expected to be disciplined, say their prayers regularly and obey the rules. However, though the rules were strict and corporal punishment was used on offenders, they were not excessively cruel. The Church wanted to raise good Eldorai girls, not the next generation of renegades and Dark Eldorai.

After an initial rebellious period Vaena settled in well. Perhaps she found something in the faith that made up for the fact that she lacked a birth family. Unwanted scions of noble families were raised alongside lower class children, which probably helped broaden her horizons a bit and meant that she remained down to earth even after learning about her true origins.

The orphans received an education from the Church and many would go on to become priestesses after their time in the orphanage was over. The facility was located near one of the settler colonies located close to the Kar'zun 'reservation zones' and the older orphans often helped out on the farms. Vaena was revealed to be a Sciian when a fire broke out and she was caught by flames while trying to help a fellow orphan get out of the danger zone.

Flames scorched her, but she was miraculously unharmed and the flames seemed to recoil from her, allowing her to save her friend. As it soon turned out after she was subjected to a scan, it was not entirely a miracle, for it was discovered that she possessed the gift. Being a Sciian, or Force user, was not a stigma in Eldorai society, and was much more common than with humans. To the Eldorai, Sciia is both the word for soul and the inner flame that allows them to call upon supernatural powers. The religious see it as a gift from the Goddess.

This revelation was a profound change in Vaena's life. Due to it, her path was set in stone, more or less. All Force-sensitive Eldorai are required to attend a state academy to learn how to control their powers. The most powerful who display an aptitude for combat are recruited by the Angelii. She was taken out of the orphanages and enrolled at one of the government schools designed to help train and manage Sciians before they could become a potential threat. Her affinity for fire meant that she was enrolled primarily as a potential soldier in the future. Over the next couple years she continued her education in the ‘Academy of the Four Powers’, performing well. Initially Vaena did rather poorly, for she missed her friends, and was uncertain about her powers, but this changed soon.

The priestesses at the orphanage had given her a very romantic view of the Angelii, the fierce warrior-women who fought for Queen and Goddess to protect Kaeshana from internal foes and the foreign pirates who preyed upon the Eldorai, and so she soon dreamt of being one. Eventually she was enrolled in the Angelii Istraii, or young angels, where she was taught how to use her powers offensively, trained with weapons and in combat. However, her first battle was not fought against pirates and slaver scum, but against fellow Eldorai.

Long story cut short, Queen Tirathana VI died and her children fought over the throne. Her niece Nalia wanted to isolate Kaeshana from the outside world and was a militant fundamentalist who still believed all foreigners were demons. Silaqui, the dead Queen's decadent daughter, was willing to make an agreement with the Omega Protectorate in return for protection and advanced tech.

She was backed by her exiled sister Anya, who returned from exile accompanied by then-Omega Pyre Colonel Siobhan Kerrigan, Corporal Kaida Taldir and others. The result was a brief civil war that ended with Silaqui crowned and Nalia dead. The Angelii were split right in the middle. Some sided with Nalia, others with Silaqui and Anya. Vaena felt rather torn and conflicted.

Her experiences with foreigners had been limited, she saw them as uncouth and predatory and Nalia was popular in the army. However, when it came to battle she sided with Silaqui since she was the legitimate heir and rumours said Nalia would conduct a bloody purge if she took over. During the course of the battle that was largely fought in the royal ziggurat, Vaena was forced to fight and kill one of the battle sisters she'd known since the orphanage. Despite her pleas, her sister would not stand down, but Vaena emerged victorious in the brutal duel. It was a sobering experience that struck a blow against her youthful idealism. However, she decided to stay with the Angelii and was commended for her actions. She remained wary of the foreigners while Kaeshana was integrated into the Protectorate, though her attitude towards them eventually softened, becoming less suspicious and xenophobic and more guarded.

Her soldier career continued as she fought pirates, slavers and, once again, fellow Eldorai during the civil war that ended with Silaqui being killed by renegade Angelii and Anya becoming queen. The so-called 'Venari Restoration' resulted in profound changes on Kaeshana, both economic and social. Military modernisation was accompanied by a liberalisation of society, which conservatives descried as decadence. It was around this time that Vaena, then a Talon or Sergeant, caught the eye of Captain Taldir, who'd returned to the Angelii after leaving Omega Pyre and was rising fast in the ranks.

Initially they did care for one another. Taldir was unpopular amongst most Angelii because she was promoted over many officers more senior than her, seen as a foreigners' pet and made little secret of not being devout. None of this endeared her to the still rather conversative Vaena. However, they gradually acquired a mutual respect for one another after fighting Reavers and other monsters during the Second Battle of Gehenna. During the Netherworld event Kaida was put in temporary command of all Angelii since all her superiors had vanished and made Vaena her chief lieutenant.

The event shook Vaena's faith since the devout Eldorai thought at first it was the end of days and that the disappeared had been raptured, though she soon realised it was the work of an evil - and very melodramatic - demon. She soon received a field promotion to Host Leader, fought Dark Eldorai on Kaeshana, the vicious Klaxxi on Sullust and then pirates on Arkas, where she was part of Taldir's strike team that saved the 'lost elves', confirming the existence of the lost elf world Tygara. Vaena was baffled but also excited to realise that there more of her people in the stars, but then had to go through the shocking revelation that Kaeshana would be destroyed by a massive asteroid. No one, not even the Goddess could protect it.

Was Ashira punishing them for their sins? Was this a test? Did this mean the Goddess was weak and uncaring? Or was Tygara's existence a sign that she was there and looking out for her people? These were questions she struggled to answer, but she threw herself into her duty. She was not part of the expedition force sent to make first contact with the natives of Tygara, which suited her fine since she wanted to be with her people. Thus she was on Kaeshana when a conspiracy of Eldorai nobles, led by the Queen's aunt, tried to assassinate Siobhan Kerrigan.

After the plot narrowly failed, Angelii loyalists, including Vaena, arrested nobles suspected of complicity during a dramatic scene in the Eldorai Council. At this point Vaena was profoundly irritated by the pettiness of her people's nobles. Far from serving the Matriarchy and the greater good in a time of national crisis, most of them were petty and power-hungry. She kept her faith in the Queen though since she had the good of her people in mind, though she disagreed with some of her liberal policies, like letting men join the Council.

Vaena finally learned of her heritage during the exodus. Panic broke out on Kaeshana, for only a selected few could be evacuated. The much-vaunted obedience of the Eldorai gave way to desperation as people tried to get one of the coveted spaces on an exodus ship by any means necessary. Cults mushroomed, promising varying forms of salvation, the streets ran red with blood. During a skirmish with fanatical cultists and looters Vaena saved the life of an Eldorai noblewoman. That aristo turned out to be none other than Mylea Cadalthor.

Perhaps it was the Force, intuition or the Goddess, but both realised who the other was. Myela had come down on hard times. Ironically, she'd supported Nalia during the coup. For her treason, she'd been sent to the Eagle's Nest, the Angelii's not so secret prison. It was terribly ironic that Vaenia had been stationed there for a bit, but never met her birth mother. Mylea had been pardoned and released for good behaviour after Anya came to power. By then she'd been scarred by the less than pleasant treatment in prison. When Tarissa framed her mother Mikela as a traitor during the pre-exodus purge, she placed her aunt under house arrest. Presumably she intended to rid herself of another possible rival, but the investigation found no evidence of treason and Anya was a lot less inclined than her predecessors to kill people purely due to personal dislike.

The reunion between mother and daughter was awkward to say the least. Both lived in different worlds, Vaena was curious, but also shocked about the revelation of her true origins. For her part, Mylea strongly regretted giving up her daughter, but at the same time had new children and Vaena was a stranger to her. Nonetheless, she tried to include the young Angelii, which put Vaena through internal turmoil since such contact conflicted with her duties. Moreover, Mylea's daughters made no secret out of the fact that a lowly Angelii officer was beneath them. Especially one who'd been born a bastard.

This was also the time Vaena finally encountered her cousin, Tarissa Cadalthor. Indeed, Tarissa had been keeping tabs on her cousin for quite a bit. In all likelihood this was because the suspicious noblewoman wanted to make sure she could not become a rival. Suffice to say the two cousins did not care for one another. In the end, Vaena decided to stay with the Angelii and not attempt to get herself legitimised as a member of House Cadalthor. So much of their behaviour seemed so...petty, wasteful and selfish to her. They were her blood, but not what she considered to be her 'family'. She was a soldier and that was that.

She was reunited with Kaida just in time for the great exodus. Over 2 billion Eldorai were evacuated by Firemane and the Silver Coalition, but many, many perished. Even before the asteroid impacted, Santaissa had been turned into a war zone by looting and rebellions. The experiences left a deep wound inside Vaena that has not healed yet, if it ever will. Many of those who were evacuated were the rich, the bright and powerful, while the rest received a lower priority. Enraged by the brutal civil war that broke out while nemesis was coming to Kaeshana, Vaena shot rebellious Angelii who'd been captured after days of fierce fighting in Santaissa, during which she'd lost many battle sisters. All Angelii were guaranteed a seat in the evacuation fleet, but Vaena felt like staying behind before Kaida punched her and had minions drag her away. This obviously caused a rift for a good while.

What followed was the fallout of the exodus and the move to Tygara. Gradually she recovered, partly under the care of the Priestess Eileithya Saedaris. Vaena remained with the Angelii and has taken part in the Eldorai assault upon the Xioquo, the dark elves who became an enemy to the newcomers since they set foot upon Tygara.

Askari participated in the humanitarian operation launched by the Tygaran Alliance and the Galactic Alliance on Kaeshana and fought in the battle that subsequently took place against the First Order, participating in the fighting in the ruins of Santaissa. The forced retreat from the Eldorai homeworld affected her strongly, but there was no reprieve as unrest broke out on Tygara in response to the defeat. Once again she was drawn into the game of thrones and, much to her irritation, it turned out her birth family, the one that had scorned her and treated her as an embarrassment, was involved in.

Thanks! :)

I like to world-build stuff. Should probably update the bio some time. Young Vaena has moved up since and become a duchess.

...She was probably happier as a soldier and junior officer.
