BACKGROUND

TAKE WHAT YOU CAN

Not much is known of Kjartan Hammer-Hand’s childhood, outside of that he was born on Kestri. It is widely believed that his people were forgemasters and tradesmen; the backbone of Mandalorian society within the state known as ‘The Enclave’. Unwilling to ascribe to a life he thought of as ‘complacent’ and comfortable, yet also being unwilling to subject himself to the structure of the Enclave; Kjartan left along with a small group of his peers and took on the life many among the Mandalorian people resort to - that of a mercenary. While starting off doing legitimate work for The Empire and other regional powers, Kjartan’s band eventually fell into doing business with less scrupulous employers; one contract placing them under the employ of a crime lord who wished for them to hunt and kill a local pirate. The hunt began as it often does, tracking down this pirate through seedy cantinas and far-flung tradeways, until they eventually caught up with the raiders.

The pirates hardly stood a chance against a band of young, but blooded Mandalorian warriors. The pirate captain, along with most of his crew were slain without much challenge or thought. The rest of the crew was taken prisoner, slated to be delivered to the Crime Lord in exchange for a bounty. While in captivity, the former quartermaster of the crew bent the year of young Kjartan, who posed the thought of joining together with the young band and taking them under his wing. At first, Kjartan dismissed the suggestion out of hand, as many men would tell tales of reward to avoid death. But the two men did form a sort of odd friendship, which facilitated a unique opportunity. An Imperial patrol happened upon the seized pirate ship, and it was only through the efforts of the captured crew that they were able to narrowly escape being captured themselves.

It was due to this ‘lifedebt’ of sorts that Kjartan took the offer of the quartermaster. Trust was slow to develop, as both parties suspected treachery from the other. Eventually, the Mandalorians and the pirates formed a symbiotic relationship borne out of necessity and survival - the Mandalorians could not return to their crime lord employer given their failure to fulfill the contract, and the pirates saw the value in the strength their newfound friends offered. So it was that the two entities became one, forming what became an infamous pirate band that operated on the outskirts of Galactic Alliance and Imperial space. Eventually, Kjartan would himself gain expertise in navigating the hyperlanes, and more valuable - the unexplored regions of space beyond. He became known to the spacers of the Outer Rim as ‘The Hammer Hand’ due to his brutal and hard-hitting tactics, which intimidated the overtaxed Imperial Navy within the region.

GIVE NOTHING BACK

While war was a constant within the Galaxy, most notably the Second Great Hyperspace War; eventually, an even greater war would develop between the two great powers of the galaxy - the Galactic Alliance and The Empire. Considering the animosity incurred between the Hammer-Hand and the Empire, the Mandalorian turned-pirate decided to take advantage of the situation by making an offer; An offer of himself and his crew to serve as privateers for the Alliance, in exchange for amnesty over past crimes. The Alliance accepted largely out of necessity, as they were quickly thrown on the back foot under the weight of the Imperial offensive. As the Alliance military reorganized to try and seize the initiative, Kjartan and his crew took advantage of their change in status, and prosecuted a series of devastating raids along supply routes and logistical chains for the Imperial Military. With his growing power base, Kjartan even went as far as to seize several military installations and supply bases, which in turn forced the Imperial Military to redirect resources from the war effort.

As fortunes would have it, the Empire would crumble under the weight of its own internal pressure, and the external momentum of the Alliance counter-attack. With the Imperial state gone, there was no longer any central government who wanted Kjartan’s head - only a few star systems that happened to survive the collapse. In the aftermath of the war, Kjartan would remain publicly unsung, but unofficially - he’d be considered a war hero, and a crucial asset for the Alliance’s recovery. Plus, he won a tremendous fortune of captured spoils, which in turn made his crew very happy. It was at this time that he reflected over his life, and the life he had left behind on Kestri. While he was still considered in his prime by Mandalorian standards, he could see the stray grey hairs beginning to settle on his beard. He wondered what became of his family, and of the world he had left behind so long ago.

It was at this time that he decided to retire from piracy, and return with those brothers of his who wished to their sacred homeworld - only to find it nearly overrun by the Vong hybrid abominations who sprung up from below. So it was that the Hammer-Hand roused himself and fought alongside the brothers he left behind to restore the sanctity of their world. And it was because of this, that the yearning to fight for his people rather than credits, welled up within his breast.

In the aftermath of Kestri’s reclamation, Kjartan would officially become one of the first commanders within the newly reformed navy of the fallen Enclave - known as the Mythic fleet of the Iron Covenant. Rather than raiding, Kjartan swore within the snow-swept halls of Tor Valum to extend the influence of his people to the far-flung enclaves scattered from the Enclave’s collapse.

PERSONALITY

Kjartan has always been a larger than life figure. As a young man, he was often considered unceremonious, reckless, and headstrong. As he got older, that same willful behavior found a welcome outlet in the exploits of a mercenary and later pirate. He was known to be able to handle his alcohol, and could often be found bedding the tavern wench or seduced maiden. Eventually, as friends met their fate at the hands of worthy foes, and the misbegotten decisions he made in youth caught up with him - maturity found him. Despite the intemperance of youth, he always held to the Code and morality his father had instilled within him. Unceremonious gave way to a quiet reverence; recklessness gave way to measured ferocity, and a headstrong nature was blunted in favor of carrying enough self respect to meet the gaze of others, while granting the same respect in kind to those who stood before him. Today he is a man weathered by the past decades, who has been forged by the trials the years carried. He bears an air of command and hard-won wisdom, with a carefully bridled fury that is reserved for those who earn his ire.

STRENGTHS
+Pirate Lord (Formerly)- Knows how to raid and perform hit-and-run tactics
+Melee/Close Quarters Expert- Whether it’s unarmed, with his hammers, or a shotgun - Kjartan is not someone you want to mess with close-up.
+Fleet Command- The Hammer-hand is a famed fleet commander from his days as a pirate lord.
+Astrogation- Kjartan knows how to navigate, outmaneuver, and position.
+Strategic- While he may not look it, Kjartan has a sound strategic mind, and carries with him years of hard-earned wisdom.
+Honor-bound- Through it all, Kjartan has always held to ‘a version’ of the Mandalorian Creed in some form or fashion, and is considered an honorable man.

WEAKNESSES
-Pirate Lord (Formerly)- While mostly pardoned for his actions as a pirate, not all demons from the paste can be done away with...
-Void-locked - Although Kjartan can fight on any terrain, most of his life has been spent aboard ships or orbital installations. He’s an expert in space combat, but he is not nearly as versatile on ground-based theaters of war.
-Above the Law - Despite receiving a pardon by the Galactic Alliance, the fact remains that he led a life of crime and effectively abandoned his clan in the process. There are some within the Iron Covenant who challenge the honorable status he holds, and who see him as little more than a man who escaped justice.
-Hard Living - He is still hale, hearty, and well within his prime - Kjartan looks older than he truly is judging from the scars and worn lines on his face and body.
-Clan Bralor Remembers - While Kjartan holds considerable status within the Iron Covenant, and standing within his clan; his status as a Bralor is not nearly what it would be had he remained within his Clan and served the Enclave with honor.
