SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Kessil
  • Classification: City
  • Location: Fourth Moon of Utapau
  • Affiliation: Independent
  • Demographics: It is a city open to a wide variety of species so long as they breathe standard atmospheres; its population of ca. 35,000, of which 37% are Pau'ans, 34% Utai, 15% humans and 14% other species.
  • Wealth: Medium: while the city primarily lives from the trade and manufacture of construction materials, the Fourth Moon of Utapau is a marginal player in the galactic construction materials market
  • Stability: Medium-High, although the town is pretty segregated in terms of socio-economic resident status, thus causing tensions in an otherwise safe town
  • Description: Built on a plateau with crevasses marking the city limits to the southwest, Kessil is a city with three rings: the main commercial and areas in the center ring, with the Jedi-Bendu Temple, today serving as a government building, at the very center of it all, as well as peripheral commercial zones in buffer zones between the industrial park and the more upscale areas to the east of the city's outer ring, with the residential areas in the middle ring, the working classes living in the western area of the middle ring, the middle class in the eastern area of the middle ring, much of the southwestern part of the city being a duracrete ready mix plant, and a sawmill further north, which manufactures wooden products of several varieties: birch, beech, pine, oak, to name the main ones. Between the two major industries of the city is the spaceport, which caters to freight transportation of dry duracrete, timber, and other dimension stone quarried on the Fourth Moon of Utapau, such as granite, several varieties of marble, basalt and sandstone.
POINTS OF INTEREST

Jedi-Bendu Temple:

Built in 130 ABY out of local marble by the Starkiller and Valor families in the wake of the Massacre at Ossus, the Jedi-Bendu Temple marks the historical center of the city and was originally used as a safe house for Jedi fleeing the horrors wrought by the One Sith, and was extensively rebuilt after the 400-Year Darkness. Today, the temple houses both the moon-wide government and municipal offices, with the meeting chambers of both bodies: one for the city council and another one for the Moon Senate.

New Barkhesh district:

Built by a Barkhesh-based developer to the east of the city, the real estate development called New Barkhesh sought to cater to the upper-middle classes of the Outer Rim that wanted to live in peace and quiet, complete with architectural landscaping, while still doing so in an affordable manner, and therefore make such a luxury item within range of more people than before. As with Barkhesh, the low cost of the materials and the minimalistic bureaucracy on the Fourth Moon of Utapau enabled the developers to get an entire neighborhood built on the Fourth Moon of Utapau for a fraction of the cost it would have on other planets in that corner of the Outer Rim, even when accounting for the use of local materials. Today, Kessil residents refer to the New Barkhesh district as the place where the rich and the famous of the moon live, bordered by the native forests.

Utapau Alchemy Castle:

As with nearly all the houses in the New Barkhesh district, the Utapau Alchemy Castle was built by a Barkhesh-based developer; its owner, Janick Beauchamp, operates an alchemy workshop from that location, Utai Magic Circle. Featuring over 700 square meters of livable space, including the basement, it would otherwise be hard to tell that alchemical activities are taking place there to the untrained, NFU eye, but any Force-user would realize that there are some dark side energies emanating from the basement as a result of alchemical activities.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Kessil was founded by the Valor family ca. 130 ABY, with Akira Valor being the first mayor of the settlement, in the wake of the Massacre at Ossus; also other significant figures from the early days of the city were the Starkiller family, Kane, Annikin and Deak being the key members of that family, and building a secret temple known as the Jedi-Bendu Temple. But quickly the needs for construction materials in the decades to follow, even in that corner of the Outer Rim, spurred the construction of industries on the Fourth Moon of Utapau, including the sawmill and the duracrete plant, which are still active today. In the centuries to follow, the city lived on, being barely a blip on people's radars outside the Utapau system, and supplying limited quantities of duracrete, timber and dimension stone for luxury projects on Utapau proper. During the Four-Hundred Year Darkness, most residents other than Pau'ans and Utai left the city and sought refuge elsewhere on the moon, leading to the expansion of the populations of the quarry villages, nestled inside the cliffs of the moon.

The golden age of the city came immediately after the Four-Hundred Year Darkness ended: the needs for reconstruction were immense at the time, and the city saw growth to the size it acquired today, due to the expansion of the production in the industries in place in the city. It also saw a growth in wealth especially when, in 849 ABY, a Barkhesh-based developer decided to build a new neighborhood for those wanting luxury country houses, known as New Barkhesh. At the onset, they were affordable, due to their distance from the industrial parks, their plot sizes and the landscaping, but it has been criticized for promoting land-based discrimination.
