  • Predictive Targeting System: The KC-A301 is outfitted with an advanced targeting sensor array designed to improve accuracy against missiles, kinetic projectiles and starfighters by attempting to predict their position the moment they begin a maneuver. The system factors in the target's speed and estimated mass in order to attempt to lead the target and score a successful hit. This system also attempts to anticipate changes in the target's acceleration, utilizing advanced computers that can perform these complex calculations in real time.

  • Rate of Fire: The KC-A301 system's six barrels can output laser bolts at an extremely high rate of fire, increasing the chances of a successful interception
  • Accuracy: The KC-A301's advanced targeting systems dramatically improve its accuracy, increasing the odds of scoring successful hits

  • Short Range: The KC-A301 is designed to intercept missiles, kinetic projectiles and low-flying starfighters, its range being extremely limited, making it useless against targets more than a few hundred meters away
  • Heat Management: The KC-A301's power and rate of fire come at the expense of heat management, the weapon being required to cease firing in order to cool down after six hundred shots, giving potential enemies a five second window during which it is unable to engage

Developed and manufactured by Karavin Concern, the Eternal Empire's largest military-industrial conglomerate, the KC-A301 'Shrike' is a ship-mounted weapons system designed to function as a point defense array. The system consists of six short-range, rapid-firing laser cannons housed in a turret that is capable of tracking and engaging small targets such as starfighters and missiles up to a few hundred meters away with a high degree of accuracy.

The weapons system achieves this through the use of a series of highly sophisticated sensors and powerful on-board computers which form a predictive targeting system, which attempts to predict a target's position by calculating its trajectory based on its speed, estimated mass and acceleration when it initiates a maneuver, attempting to lead the target and unleash a withering barrage of fire in order to intercept it.

Although it is capable of engaging low-flying starfighters, the system's primary purpose is to intercept missiles and kinetic projectiles and its targeting system limits its range to only a few hundred meters, beyond which it can not calculate a target's position. Consequently, its laser cannons have been extensively redesigned, sacrificing range for rate of fire, making it incapable of engaging targets at longer distances even if it were to be manually targeted by an operator. Its massive capacitor banks and the extremely high rate of fire also cause serious issues with heat management, the entire platform having to power down for five seconds after six hundred shots, a safety feature implemented in order to prevent overheating and allow the system to cool down.

Much larger than comparable platforms and with a relatively average per-shot stopping power, as well as having high power requirements, the KC-A301 is not intended for use as a vehicle-mounted weapon, intended primarily to be outfitted on a warship, although it can also be deployed in a stationary configuration as a short-range anti-air defense tower, provided that an adequate support structure capable of withstanding its considerable weight is constructed, along with a power source and a large enough Tibanna gas storage cell, as the weapon tends to burn through ammunition extremely fast due to its rate of fire.
