ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Sturdy Attack Cruiser: While not the strongest or the fastest cruiser out there it was cheap and it got the job done.
  • Automation: The cruiser could rely on a much smaller crew than you would assume for a ship of its size, opening up the possibility for small local defense forces to field the cruiser.
WEAKNESSES
  • Strike Craft: While its laser cannons and quad laser cannons could be used for defense, they lacked the targeting computers and the maneuvering speed necessary for true point defense. With its other weapons dedicated to capital ship warfare the Katana was extremely vulnerable to strike craft like starfighters and fast gunships.
  • Engine Blind Spot: While the cones of fire the Katana can produce are impressive, most of its weapons are dedicated to the space around the main body of the vessel. The engines lacked point defense of any kind and left them vulnerable as well as the Katan itself.

DESCRIPTION
Produced in large numbers by the Core Imperial Confederation and its predecessor, the Galactic Empire, the Dreadnought provided a solid platform for both offensive and defensive fleets. Upon its collapse, however many of these vessels fell into the hands of private owners, pirate groups, and other nefarious agencies. The blueprints, however, fell into the hands of Kuat Drive Yards through a myriad of questionable exchanges. The vessel was quickly rushed into service to defend the Kuat Sector, becoming the mainstay of Kuat Defense Fleets as their economy plummeted. After contracts with the Galactic Alliance eased production costs and the Lord Regent pushed Kuat's manufacturers back into relevancy through sheer force of will, the Dreadnought saw several upgrades and a class name change. Redubbed the Katana-Class Heavy Cruiser it saw several changes in its automation, energy production, and thrust to weight ratio change. Much to the chagrin of most ship enthusiasts however, the changes were minimal in scope and ultimately it was the same vessel only now it served better as a front-line vessel than a support cruiser. With more robust shields and armor than its predecessor and a vast array of weapons, the Katana didn't change the formula but slapped a new paint and a new brand name on it and called it a day.
