karimloo-450-1.jpg

Name: Kalen Genet
Alias: Ikad, "Avram Mesenshuk"
Faction: N/A
Occupation: Smuggler
Homeworld: Vorpa'ya

Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 34
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 165 lbs
Force-sensitive: Not enough to control it, but just enough to not be considered non-sensitive.

Personality

Sarcastic, abrasive, and vulgar are three words that are often used to describe Kalen by people who have worked with him. Generally not described as a "people-person," Kalen far prefers to be by himself and work alone, and people who have interacted with him in the past have thus experienced first hand his distaste for cooperative ventures, generally in the form of rude commentary or jokes. However, many of them have also commented on his dedication and work-ethic, because Kalen is the sort of person who, once he has accepted a job, will do nearly anything he can to ensure it is completed. He's also been described as pragmatic and conscientious, as, should a fight come about in the course of a job, he's not above using every trick at his disposal to win, and nor will he allow anybody working with him/anybody he considers innocent to get harmed or killed just to ensure a job gets completed.

Beyond the exterior, Kalen's underlying traits help explain those that most people see; owing to a host of misadventures and poor decisions of either himself or others in life, Kalen is already a bitter man, and his preference for working alone (and his tendency to thus drive others away) come as a result of not wanting to inflict his own perceived bad luck upon others. However, his dedication and conscientiousness both are the results of a personal code of honour that he developed during his past as a Mandalorian warrior, and appeals to his honour (should anybody stick close enough to him to learn this part of him) are one of the few things that can convince the seemingly-cowardly, only-concerned-with-money smuggler to involve himself in a cause greater than "How can I keep making credits?"

Attributes

With a fighting style that is based more on cunning and speed than on brute strength, Kalen has only an average level of physical power; in any contest of physical strength alone, Kalen will, almost always, lose. However, he is both an accurate and quick shot, and should it be necessary, he can outrun, out-climb, and out-swim nearly any other human or near-human he might compete against; the outrunning is especially useful in a fight that he seems to be losing. However, he does have the natural constitution and endurance to take hits and keep going, although that's almost more due to sheer strength of will than it is to any special physical considerations.

Mentally, he is a very intelligent individual, with an almost encyclopedic knowledge of nearly everything he might run into in his line of work as a smuggler (including, but not limited to: ships, goods, weapons, tactics [specializing in "dirty fighting" and "hiding"], etc.), and he spends much of his spare time reading or working to maintain his practical knowledge. Owing to his experiences he is also fairly wise, although any useful wisdom that might be gleaned from him is tempered by his bitterness; he is also not charismatic whatsoever, not in the sense of diplomatic ability and inspiring nature, to the point that many people think he actively tries to avoid making friends. In the sense of 'force of personality,' however, he has quite a bit of that that he can use.

In a fight, while not relying on his physical strength, he is still an adept hand-to-hand or melee combatant, with his main skills in the area being in maintaining a solid defense and knowing just when and where to strike to derive the maximum effect. This plays into his generally 'dirty' fighting, as he feels that pragmatism in combat trumps all other considerations of how to fight. While he's no sniper/designated marksman or anything like that, he's still a good shot with a blaster rifle or blaster pistols, generally relying on the latter in combat.

Lastly, while most beings that were considered to be Force-attuned generally had good luck, Kalen is the opposite; he once had a discussion with a Jedi he was transporting who wondered if the Force was just playing a joke on the poor man's entire life. This is generally manifested in issues relating to his ship - while by the accounts of every simulation he's ever used he should be at least an average pilot, Kalen has a notorious struggle when it comes to controlling his ship. Between an inability to easily get the controls to do what he wants, a lack of ability to predict what his ship or other ships will actually do, and a host of other problems with the ship, many beings that know him wonder how it is he's actually able to make a living as a smuggler: Kalen's answer usually is something along the lines of "Lots of swearing and even more manhandling." This bad luck has manifested in other ways, though, such as how he has a scar in one leg, where a piece of shrapnel that exploded nearby managed to miraculously hit one of the smallest gaps in his armour to lodge in his flesh, the time a sinkhole suddenly opened up when he was trying to lift off, and a whole host of other stories he can tell if you somehow manage to stay close enough to him to hear them.

Ship and Droid

Kalen had an Astro-class freighter, that hasn't been modified much from stock except for slightly faster sublight engines, a class 0.5 hyperdrive, a better food processor and some hidden storage compartments (including under the walkways, for better ability to hide). The previous owner had never named the ship, although Kalen, due to his experiences with it, has since named it the Bad Luck Express.

After that ship sustained somewhat significant damage during an ill-advised but ultimately successful boarding action on a frigate, he replaced it with an EFR-4100 light freighter. Unwilling to downgrade, however, he cannibalized the remains of his old ship, managing to install a better hyperdrive, food processor, and hidden compartments on the new ship. However, he never gave it a name.

He has since upgraded again to a Nimbus-class gunship/heavy freighter from the Republic Engineering Corporation, gaining a ship that is all around more defensible and harder-hitting than his older two. He has, of course, installed the same hidden compartments on it, but everything else was made to a higher standard than the previous ships; not surprising, given its military-focused role.

To help him control his ship/keep it maintained/do anything he can't, he has a K1 astromech droid, designation K1-70.

Biography

Born the son of a pair of Mandalorian warriors/farmers on Vorpa'ya, Kalen was raised in the tradition of the Mando'ade. From that, he gained most of the skills that have gotten him far in life - his fighting and weapon skills, primarily, but also the skills of tracking and hunting, a healthy respect for cunning over simple strength, and he also learned to speak Mando'a alongside learning Basic. Eventually, during the time he was completing his coming-of-age ceremony, his father gave him the nickname of Ikad, a somewhat-grammatically-incorrect way of saying "Little saber," due to how fierce Kalen was as a boy (and also because Ikad rolled off the tongue better than Kad'ika).

Unlike his farmer parents, Kalen quickly took on the occupation of a full warrior/bounty hunter, though as time went on, mercenary service in numerous conflicts eventually wore down on both Kalen's body (one nasty incident with a shrapnel grenade giving him a bad leg) and on his outlook, as his poor luck and inability to protect everybody serving alongside him led to numerous of his friends (Mandalorian and non-Mandalorian) finding their ends in service alongside him. After nearly thirteen years of this he retired from service as a warrior and bounty hunter, instead using the credits he'd amassed to buy himself a freighter and taking up work as an independent shipping contractor within the Mandalore sector. Recent events, however - most noticeably Ra Vizsla's rise to the position of Mandalore and the change in society due to it - have led to Kalen abandoning the Mandalore sector entirely, simply taking up work as a smuggler everywhere else.
