- Two Lives: Kaalia Pavanos and Darth Avacyn are not the same people. Where Kaalia has always been there, Avacyn came into being as the embodiment of her Sith beliefs. This split is not absolute, though. They are kept seperate merely by her own will.
- Lady of Defiance: If Kaalia had to be summed up in one word, it would be defiant. She challenges and questions established beliefs and traditions, takes nothing at face value, and refuses to be dependent.
- Protective: Although the circle of people she cares about is not large, she is willing to go to extreme lengths to keep them from harm. Putting her own life in danger is not outside of that realm.
- The Person, Then the Alignment: Kaalia does not see things in complete black and white. For a common goal she is willing to work with just about anyone, as long as they are not hostile. She feels the same about personal relations.

APPEARANCE
Standing at 1.83m, Kaalia weighs in at 74kg, and is fairly lean. One of her most outstanding features is her fiery red hair that falls below her shoulders which is often kept loose. Her eyes are a brilliant emerald color which turns to a mix of red and sulphur when she connects deeply with the Dark side. A scar that was caused by a lightsaber adorns her left eye. A tribal tattoo inspired by her Kro Varian heritage covers the left side of her midsection.

In order to sustain herself, she started doing odd jobs while hitching flights from planet to planet. During that time, she learned how to move silently and stay unnoticed. Her last job was to deal with a man who had a habit of breaking into the property of the client, but when Kaalia confronted him it quickly became clear the man was a Force wielder much like herself. She quickly realized he had enjoyed more training than her and felt outmatched, leaving her feeling scared for the first time in three years after leaving her Jedi master. She was alone, with nowhere to go. She knew it was going to be him or her, with nobody to save her. It was that moment where she for the first time drew from such a dark emotion, and as such from the Dark side of the Force. She reveled in it, and used the newfound power to defeat the Dark Jedi. After killing the him, she took his lightsaber and used it as her own.
She used both her original blue lightsaber and the red saber she took that day, to remind herself of her roots, but also what she is now. She decided to join the First Order, more specifically the Knights of Ren, not long after the encounter with the Dark Jedi in order to hone the power of the Dark side she accepted as a part of her, in addition of her wish to find a place to call home and no longer be alone. She struggled however, as she still believed in the good of the Light side, but she felt it was too late to turn back from the path she was on. This tug-of-war between the Light and Dark is what occupied her mind most, her past and present in seemingly endless conflict. Although she still believed her emotions are what makes her and would protect them with her life, she carried a small part of the light with her.

After joining the Ren, Kaalia quickly realized that sacrifices had to be made. Conflict after conflict left her mentally tattered and broken, but against all expectations she found a friend: Ara Ren. The two were almost polar opposites, but they made easy contact. The differing personalities also caused clashing between the two, but Kaalia always cared about Ara, considering her a close friend. This friendship, combined with the teachings of her master Jaron Lesan and the help from once-Jedi master Connor Harrison, helped her embrace the darkness within her, taking steps away from the light. After Connor and Kaalia confronted Ara about her own issues, nearly destroying Kaalia's friendship with Ara, she finally broke the shell that kept her true self restrained. Filled by her passion, she fully accepted the Dark side and broke the shackles of the Light and with it her past. Soon after she would find herself promoted from Disciple to Knight as the Ren recognized her newfound power.After some time the redhead was approached by a Sith Lord by the name of Krest. Her offered her training in the ways of the Sith in exchange for information about the Ren, and she obliged. While staying with the Ren and furthering their goals, she secretly learned from the Sith and made the knowledge her own in addition to the things she learned from the Ren.
Kaalia's hatred for the Light was something that was still with her, however. This changed when she met her former Jedi master for the final time. It made her realize that he never meant for her to be anything else but herself, and merely tried to show what the Light meant to him. Although she still believed the Dark Side had shown her who she truly was, she no longer bore spite for people who accepted the Light.
This acceptance took a large dent over time, however. Many conflicts with the Galactic Alliance shaped her view of the Light, and the Jedi in particular, into something more reserved. Although she does not believe in destroying all who follow the Light, which she sees as an impossibility in the first place, she has made it her mission to make as many followers of the Light see the truth of the Dark side.
For some time during all of this, Kaalia had begun developing a romantic relationship with a First Order Starfighter pilot by the name of Ishana Pavanos, something that had slowly developed after they met back when the redhead was a Disciple of Ren. During the conflict between the First Order and the Galactic Alliance Ishana on Hoth, Ishana was shot down but saved by Kaalia. While she carried her girlfriend to safety the Balmorran asked her to marry her, to which she answered yes without hesitation.
After some time under Krest's tutelage Kaalia underwent a poison trial, which she survived and passed. In the Temple of the Forgotten Lords she was given the title of Darth Avacyn after battling her own demons and defeating them, although they still linger.
Her clashing ideals with the Order of Ren made her time with them limited, however. Eventually she was summoned by one of the Masters of Ren, an encounter that would lead to being cast out of the Ren with her memories altered. She would not remember anything about them to prevent her from sharing their secrets. From that moment on she would no longer hide the fact she was Sith and when she came in contact with the Sith Empire she joined them in order to grow further in power and aid in eclipsing the Light once more. There, together with Aria Vale, she created the foundation for the Valkyries, a group within the Empire who seek out the worthy in battle to show them the Dark side and allow them to seek the truth within it.
Her work did not go unnoticed by the Sith Empire, and after some time she ascended to the rank of Sith Lady. She claimed the title Lady of Defiance, chosen to reflect how she had grown as a Sith and a person. To challenge and question everything was how her power was attained and so it was a choice that came to her naturally and almost instantly.
There was one more thing that kept her from being satisfied with her new title, however. Her now-former master Krest still lived. To claim superiority while he still walked the galaxy was an impossibility in her mind, but that was hardly the main reason for doing so. In order to protect her now-wife, Ishana, as he had learned too much about her for Kaalia to ignore. The last thing Kaalia did was trust Krest, knowing that if it would ever be to his benefit it would not be too far for him to hurt Ishana. She confronted the zabrak in his own chamber in the Sith temple of Bastion, where after a battle she killed him.
After Krest's death, it almost seemed like the Force wanted Kaalia to carry on the torch that he had for so long as she quickly found herself with a number of apprentices. The Lord of Trials had trained many Sith, and now it was her turn to watch over the growth of promising acolytes.
