Just When I Thought I Was Out

Imagine, if you will, that you have exactly one friend. One friend who can trust you, anyway; the rest, you keep at arms' length for their own sake, and most of them have faded away. But that one friend, you know her well. You've known her what seems like forever. Your life before her is aimless and colorless when you look back. At some point, you both decided that the next step was to stay together forever, so you got together, and you got married, and you raised a kid together, and you conquered roughly one quarter of the civilized galaxy together at one point or another. Imagine you'd both shared experiences with the deadliest and most sublime beings and artifacts in the universe. Imagine that you'd made each other's dreams come true, laughed constantly, destroyed civilizations for the sake of an insult to each other.

This might be hard to imagine. This experience is so far beyond the pale of normal life that few can relate. How many people find a partner who is willing to, capable of, and interest in compensating for your weaknesses, enhancing your strengths, and sharing the prices and glories of your ambitions? Can you understand what it's like to teach your friend everything you know, lose it all, and be taught everything by her in turn?

Personally, I doubt it.

In the galley of the freighter Vagrant's Pride, Ashin wore the Crown -- the strongest shield talisman in history -- and thought about death. Her fingers moved of their own accord, leading her through a list on her datapad. Favors untapped, caches undisturbed, options unexplored, friends half-forgotten. Force, but the list was short. Clean, simple -- her current frame of mind wouldn't let her dwell on the potent web of regrets attached to many of the items on the list, and many more things that should have been on there too. No, this list was almost fatalistically simple. She was, after all, poor, though that condition was mainly of her own making, along with most of the regrets.

And as for that state of mind...

The Vagrant's Pride drifted half a parsec from anything inhabited, and she was the only living thing aboard, surrounded by a miasma of uncontrolled Force Drain. Her addiction had stolen her redemption years ago, stolen her future. She'd consumed the minimal life of the bacteria onboard as the death field expanded. Of the curios and trophies left in the ship, none were alive. Few were intrinsically valuable, but they were nearly all she had with which to barter. And one woman in one freighter couldn't make a dent on Selvaris.

Though she'd changed bodies since, she still ran a thumb down her chin sometimes, where one of her Vongshaping scars had been. There'd been others, and implants that had been buried with her old self. The memories outlasted the marks, and she knew intimately -- as intimately as she'd ever known Spencer -- what kind of pain her wife might be experiencing on Selvaris. The Dark Side burned cold in her, colder than she'd allowed it in a long, long time.

She'd thought about this kind of situation. They'd come close more than once. But it had never gone this far, and it might take her farther than she'd ever gone. That should have scared her, but sitting in deep space, surrounded by parsecs of hard vacuum and a full-scale death field, the fear didn't even register. Fear was for people who had no reason to embrace death when it came.

And after all, she'd sworn to the Five that she'd die before her time.

Ashin put aside the Crown and slid it back into the wall. It had served its purpose, helping her to focus her thoughts and bleed off the excess Force energy that had crawled through her skin. Now she took to the datapad in earnest, switching her mode of diction to the formalities of a former Empress and military despot.

The formality, but not the substance. This moment required humility.

To whom it may concern,

I find myself in an urgent situation involving the life of a close family member. Your Disruptor Lens product would be of significant use to me. I should tell you I don't have money. What I do have is a very specific set of skills, skills I've honed over a long career -- skills that can make me an asset for people like you. I will accept whatever debt or bargain you find appropriate, in return for the use of a Disruptor Lens at your earliest convenience.

Ashin wet her lips and switched trains of thought. Vanir Technologies was an unknown, and she didn't have the time for a full research project, so she'd gone with businesslike. But as for other options on the free market...well, other languages could be effective too.

To whom it may concern,

I find myself in an urgent situation involving the life of a close family member. I've used Cloaks of Nuun in the past, and I understand you used to sell them. If any are still available to you, I need three of them, as soon as possible. I should tell you that I don't have money. What I do have is a rusty but workmanlike knowledge of alchemy. I've made my master-pieces and am capable of matching an AEI Dorn rating in inorganic alchemy. I understand that AEI is in serious need of staff alchemists. If provided with the supplies I need, I can offer a commensurate amount of work in return, in whatever direction you prefer.

We've had our differences, you and I, but the One Sith captured Spencer. They've taken her to Selvaris. I need a stealth ship, Sarge -- anything you can spare. I don't have anything to offer, but I'd offer everything if I could.

I'm sorry about Belsavis, and I'd like to think I'd still be saying that if I didn't need your help.

Ostanes would have been at his desk when the wave came in. He opened it slowly. The author of it made him pause, made him chew his bottom lip and think. Ever a master of irony, Ostanes pulled off the white gloves he wore and let his hands hover before they typed up his reply. There was a resolution in his eyes when he did so. Things like this rarely happened, and if he needed to prove himself competent, it would be wise to make such acquaintances. Further, to have them in his debt would only serve his own ends even more so, though he held no illusions trying to control Ashin would be like trying to tame a coriolis storm in full force. The reply would come from a personal account on a serve completely separate from A.E.I. and their mainframe. It was high time to step from the shadows, at least a bit.

Ashin-

Three cloaks will be provided at no cost to you monetarily. Favors, Alchemical or otherwise, can be discussed at a later date. While those of my nature are ever in the business of profit, I find the One Sith and in particular the Vong to be quite bad for business. They put a stranglehold on things in the name of 'Order', when true Order is naturally, as well as paradoxically, native Chaos. Anything that might disrupt them is most welcome.

Please feel free to come in person, or respond with a suitable place for me to deliver your merchandise to. As well, if you need it, A.E.I. will pledge the full might of its' considerable resources to this cause. Whatever else we produce that might aid you, or your companions, it is but an asking away. I daresay you are almost as familiar with our resources as most of the Galaxy is, if not more so. And if what you need is not something we make, then we can always talk of what is required therein as well.

Mr. Ostanes,

Your offer has me at a loss for words. I hadn't realized that the success of the One Sith was such a challenge for corporations, but in hindsight, given their subsidies to favored quasi-parastatals and their awkward position in the alchemy field, I can see your point.

I'm not in a position that allows me to leave your further offer unaccepted. I trust it won't sound too audacious to ask for a Talisman of Concentration, as I know for a fact they don't cost nearly as much to produce as what Rave Merrill put on the price tag. If you could see your way to providing me with some arsensalts and industrial-strength desiccants, as well as a personal ray/particle shield from any of the usual manufacturers, I would be grateful.

I can meet your representatives anywhere in Mandalorian territory. I understand AEI has a long business history there. Alternately, if you retain any holdings in the north end of the Unknown Regions, I can meet them there.

Miss Varanin-

I have knowledge of a few contacts in the arms industry. I will contact them post haste to see about any shielding, since that isn't an active product at our company. The talisman is yours as well as the other sundries, to be sent at your convenience. I would offer you my own services, but I am of little use in the direct line of fire that your enterprise will likely require. And, besides the point, I am not a fan of the noise and mess of battle. I have people and sithspawn for that, of course. In that end, unless you have your triad picked out, I would recommend polling some of the more prominent mercenaries in the Galaxy, or contracting a group of Mandalorians, since they seem so hell-bent against the One Sith. A distraction to pull them in another direction might be just the ticket, really. Again, I can help pay for said distraction, if need be.

I suppose I've become so used to running all operations solo that the idea of hiring aid isn't one I've seriously considered for this situation. As I mentioned, I'm in no position to turn down your aid, though we both know there's no such thing as a free lunch. What actually gives me pause, though, is the likelihood of someone seeing that play coming. The One Sith know who they've taken and they know I'll be on my way. Virtually any distraction runs the risk of being spotted for what it is, which increases the likelihood that it'll enhance the readiness levels I have to contend with. That said, the idea has merit, and some Mandalorians are known for bringing down disproportionate results. I have enough contacts in that direction that I can make your bankroll offer go far. I'll let you know if anything develops in that regard.

You mention Sithspawn. I know the company's previous CEO once took part in the Omega Protectorate's raid to recapture Cira from a Vongshaped world; though it's not public knowledge, I even know she was a trained Vong shaper. On the off chance that AEI has any shelved backroom projects designed for use on a Vongshaped world, I could try to arrange you an anonymous field test.

Haven't lost her, not yet. The offer of a fleet is appreciated, but we're talking about Selvaris, and there's a whole lot of hostile galaxy between your assets and that neck of the woods. That said, if the One Sith happen to get a good reason to focus on somewhere that's not Selvaris -- assuming that fits your plans -- I'd be grateful if the timing lined up.

Like I said, any stealth ship will do. Full disclosure: I can't promise it, or I, will come back in one piece, so I completely understand if nothing's available.

3x Exemplar-class Personal Energy Shields have been obtained from ArmaTech. The Talisman, and Cloaks, are ready for delivery. As well, I will research our archives for a suitable toy that might yield interesting results on Selvaris. I have a few ideas that are possible in the end, though which can be finished to a deploy-able stage is the question. Whenever you are able to meet, Mandalorian Space would likely be the less watched region I have access to at the moment.

She sent the message and sat back, folding her arms. The death field had faded as she wrote -- as she began to feel more in control of the situation. Not hopeless, not helpless, not alone. Still didn't mean she was guaranteed to succeed, or even to survive.

Ms. Garter,

Your reputation precedes you. I understand you've done quite a bit of business in the galactic southeast, not far away from former Horde territory and former Titan Industries global projects. I'm looking for, if possible, a comprehensive dataset on the weaknesses and capabilities of modern Yuuzhan Vong biots. This is no idle request: it involves a family member in severe danger. I don't have money, but I understand you run a popular and lucrative auction series. I've accumulated various trophies and mementos during my career, some of which may interest you. In trade for the information I seek, I offer the lightsabre of Emperor Ronin Fel, whose death I arranged (file attached); the Seal of the Lady Protector that I earned for saving Cira's life; and potential other curios, if this proposal is amenable to you.

Best wishes,
Ashin Varanin

Sarge smiled faintly at her words, then sent a simple response, one she'd likely hear in the peculiar gravelly timbre that was his voice anymore. Or, perhaps, in her case, she'd hear that same immature boy with a shotgun, out of his depth but acting like he'd never lost control.

<<You don't owe me a thing. It's what friends are for.>>

With that, he stood from the desk, intent on finding [member="Cira"]. For some reason, he had an intense desire to hold the things that mattered most in life.

Miss Blonde

Trying to be straight in a crooked Galaxy
Sitting at her desk on Cartao Patricia was going over various files and paperwork for the recently spawned second generation of clone troopers. Being brought into this world as ten year olds to be trained into professional soldiers took a lot of paperwork you know? But asides from that she was determined to knock it out early and head home for the next week to spend time with her family, then of course her computer light up with an urgent message and she sighed knowing that whatever this was it would probably keep her late.

"Can't a girl file any god damn pap.." she said as her jaw dropped and saw who was messaging her.

Taking in the request Patricia saw what the woman had to offer, and while she could flip it and make a few bucks from it, this wasn't about money anymore. One of the more powerful entities in the galaxy had contacted her directly looking for help, and when that happened it was always best to assist them. People like them didn't have short memories after all.

"WALDO!!" she said with a screech to her assistant.

"Yes, ma'am?" a voice answered back on her intercom.

"What's the fastest ship we own currently?" She asked nicely.

"The dark harvester ma'am, we got it from that solan fellow for payment from the auction. It's in orbit by Yuuzhan'tar" the voice responded on the intercom.

Patricia sighed in relief got an idea to make sure she was in Ash's good graces.

"I want you to call Mister Green, tell him to load up the harvester with every single piece of Vong weapon, ammo, and armor there is that can fit. Blast bugs, fire jelly, Vonduun crab, all of it. Then I want you to have one of his scribes write up the weapons stats on the manifest and set them to the side on the ship. Once that's done send the ship with a droid pilot to these coordinates." she said to Waldo pinging him the exact location for the drop.

"Give them the ship, and everything on it. We'll send a ride to get the droid back with the traded items." She gave her orders and they were a go.

Getting back on the holo computer she began to type a message up to [member="Ashin Varanin"]

Recently you sent a message to the sales department of Vanir Technologies. The Corporation closely monitors the sales of this particular weapon, mostly due to its effects and the nature of its function. Were this technology to fall into the wrong hands, mainly those of the One Sith, it would quickly be rendered inert, something that would be a detriment to both my company and those utilizing the lens. A such the sale of the product is carefully screened by myself.

I have but a single question for you. Why? I realize the matter may be personal, but if you intend on utilizing this product I must know your reason.

Hands pressed at his back, his head swiveled and a small whisper went into his ear. Alric knew what he had to do, he knew what he himself would do, had done, in that situation. His lips thinned slightly, and he looked towards the holo-screen that sat in front of him. Going up against the Vong was no joke, going up against the One Sith was even less of one.

His head shook, and he nodded slightly as he came to a decision. He may have been a neutral entity, but he knew what the Sith did to ones spouses. His own wife...his now dead wife had been one of them, stark realities had eventually been learned, and she had told him tales of the Sith and their prisons. Alric was a pragmatist in the end, and he perhaps if he could help this person it would make up for some of his own sins, and those of his late wife.
