Juno - II/0571

Affiliation:

Galactic Alliance
-Galactic Alliance Defense Force
–Galactic Alliance Defense Fleet
—ANV Where Night is Blind (Ship’s A.I)
Rank: Artificial Intelligence Interface
Model: REC-DC/01 "Servitor" - Permission to Exist (x)

Strengths:
Thinker:
As a sophisticated artificial intelligence program, Juno’s purpose is to multitask a plethora of items in the span of a single millisecond, running calculations and processing stimuli faster than any human could hope to.
Learner:
The designers at the Republic Engineering Corporation did not merely design those of the Servitor program as simple AIs; for REC’s efforts, Juno can learn and continuously adapt to the environment around them.

Weaknesses:
Bound by Photons and Programming:
Juno exists merely in the interfaces connected to the ANV Where Night is Blind, manifesting in any semblance of human form entirely through the vessel’s integrated holo-projectors and otherwise no more than an elaborate matrix of code and information.
Bright Stars Burn Fast:
As a result of the nature of the “Servitor” system and its learning algorithms, Juno picks up and stores information at a dangerously rapid pace. Within an average of 5 years of activation, the system must be rebooted as to protect against catastrophic failure. Should Juno require such a procedure, the AI will lose any and all data collected over the years.

Biography:

Swift As We Be
Juno II/0571 had a rather unremarkable start as one of the many individual “Servitor” interfaces programmed and sold to the Galactic Alliance by the Republic Engineering Corporation. Upon equally unremarkable pre-launch testing, the program would find its first use aboard the ANS Swift As We Be as the battlecruiser’s onboard A.I administration unit. The vessel itself would participate in numerous pitched battles during the infamous Stygian Campaign, with Juno coordinating its gun decks and nearly every aspect of the Swift’s onboard technologies. Over the bloody years of the battlecruiser’s long tenure, II/0571 would acquire countless strings of data pertaining to the vessel’s operations, and would develop what the crew may have considered an “attachment” to the ship and its personnel.

Those were silly notions; despite any outward action on Juno’s part, it all was simply a matrix of responses and patterns that enacted them. Even when the blood of the Swift As We Be was set alight, II/0571 could not have truly felt pain. And yet, in those moments, the program produced a reaction that could be interpreted as such, a reaction that it had never once produced before.

As the Swift burst from the inside, Juno screamed.

Auldre Fidene
Though the Swift As We Be and its crew found their lives cut short and erased from the canvas of the universe, the unmodified Juno program remained in the warship’s black box– soon to be collected by Alliance forces sent to examine the wreckage.

The program, seemingly lacking the memories and cluttered matrix of its forebearer, was in the ideal condition to be re-tasked to another vessel. And as such, Juno was made the shipboard AI of the newly christened ANV Auldre Fidene, deployed from spacedock in the waning years of the Alliance-Sith conflict. The cruiser led a far less fiery life than the Swift, more often than not regulated to patrol in friendly systems even beyond the moment the war finally ended.

With this relative uneventfulness, space in Juno’s matrix was left uncluttered; and from its depths, something began to form. It appeared fractions of II/0571’s previous iteration had seeped into the Swift’s black box and lay dormant in the code of the new iteration. In time, long-lost memories were discovered by the A.I’s processing centers and it began to experience a new “emotion:” curiosity. As Juno began to analyze these forgotten memories, the interface began to wonder: what had happened? What had become of the previous iteration? II/0751 began to lead queries into Alliance databases. When it finally found answers, the program developed yet another sensation:

Fear.

It wasn’t long before this new development began to compromise the Juno AI entirely, overflowing failing computational matrices to the point where the program began to make increasingly erratic decisions against the will of the Fidene’s captain. In order to protect the vessel from harm, the intelligence interface was disabled, and the II/0571 received yet another reboot. This time, the Alliance was sure any trace of the previous iterations was wiped from history. Thus, with the danger of Quantum Cascade apparently averted, the third Juno iteration was re-assigned to the ANV Where Night is Blind.

Yet, somewhere deep in its code, something gnawed at the mind of the II/0571 unit. Juno could never put a finger on the source.
