OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a multi-functional, adaptive mesh
  • Image Credit: Me; I made this.
  • Canon: N/A
  • Links: None
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: JS-FORM
  • Homeworld: None, created on Ithor, on The Farm
  • Other Locations: Must be manufactured on The Farm; does not grow naturally, but can regenerate its form if placed in contact with a nutrient source.
  • Classification: Custom-formed plant lattice mesh
  • Average Growth Cycle: 5 minutes to form amount shown in image; regenerates based on nutrient source.
  • Viability: Self-sustainable in any and every natural environment, if given a nutrient source.
  • Description: JS-FORM is a plant lattice, designed to adapt to any active physical duress. It adapts by shifting form, similar to reactive armor on vehicles, but instead of physically expanding or growing, it adapts by shifting molecular and physical structure. Applied by bonding to a surface, it becomes integrated to the surface below it, similar to a laminate coating. Once bonded, it can shift and change as necessary to provide a variety of resourceful protections, such as bark-like toughness against knives and blades, or waxy coatings against flame and energy weapons. Bonding to surfaces is a relatively quick procedure, taking only 1 minute per square meter.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Average height: ~2 mm total thickness, ~0.4 mm effective thickness
  • Average length: N/A; sheets are grown tens of square meters at a time.
  • Color: Deep green, can adjust color to better suit the surface it is bonded to
  • Nutritional Value: None
  • Distinctions: Appears to be a thick sheet of green paper, smooth yet slightly bumpy on one side, and very fuzzy and malleable on the other.
Strengths:
  • Discreet - Extremely thin, able to bond to any surface, it is useful for coating clothing or armor plating with an additional layer of protection, without being particularly obvious.
  • Adaptive - Able to change shape, thickness, or consistency based on attacks, it is useful for a variety of needs, and unlike most JS-series plants, can become quite resilient to fire.
  • Self-repairing - The large tendrils shown are used both for bonding to the surface and as emergency nutrient wells. If needed, the lattice can repair itself by drawing from these nutrient wells.
Weaknesses:
  • Thin - The actual protective layer is only about 2/5 of a millimeter thick. While it is capable of withstanding stabs or slices, scraping attacks or extremely abrasive weather conditions will quickly wear this protection thin.
  • Non-Reproducible - Like most plants engineered on The Farm, it is incapable of reproduction.
  • Required Bond - The lattice cannot maintain any form when not bonded to a surface. While it is able to bond to any surface, it must be bonded to the surface before any form of protection is to be had.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The JS-FORM is Jak Sandrow's latest push towards all-natural armor. Designed to take the adaptive abilities of the JS-STEM to a more focused degree, it loses the JS-STEM's regenerative powers in the process, but gains a faster adaptive ability. Able to react to adverse conditions in real-time, it greatly reduces - though does not entirely negate - negative effects of said attacks.

For example, a stabbing attempt would cause the plant lattice to harden and become bark-like. While contact is still felt, there is no penetration and no wound to speak of. Another example would be a blaster bolt - the lattice would become waxy and shiny, letting the heated plasma of the bolt dissipate and dissolve away, however the impact of the plasma would still be noticed by the wearer. Slugthrowers and similar heavy impacts would become much more noticeable, and could still potentially bruise the wearer.

No, this isn't meant for the Factory; it is going to be used in tech submissions in the future, but this is not a tech submission.

I do realize, however, that this current submission is no longer following the 2.2 Codex template for species, and I will update that as necessary, tagging you again when completed.

The last paragraph is a bit of a grey area, and does appear as a tech submission, but I want to be clear that is not the case. What should I do to rectify this?

This reads as a material for creating things, thus materials are put through the factory. Please submit this through the factory or create the species you're trying to create and create it as such. From the way you've described the submission it reads as a material.

Thank you.
