- Planetary Features: Cities on Jhalaan require a forcefield to protect them from the raging salt-storms that periodically blow over the planet.
- Major Locations:
- NuHarbor: NuHarbor was established by Governor Sarai Harbower in 151ABY and has remained the largest city ever since. It is home to the largest space port on Jhalaan, the Moff's Palace where the Harbower family resides, and is home to around 11,000,000 citizens. It is from NuHarbor that The Constabulary and the Lord Protector at its head rule the planet and oversee the countless regiments of constables who maintain the law and wage war against the criminal syndicates on Jhalaan. Great blue, gold, and white banners marked with the mark of the Constabulary hang off of government buildings with smaller variants positioned strategically around the city both as decoration and a reminder to its populace who rules them.
- The Salt Flats: Most of Jhalaan is dominated by massive salt flats, remnants of an ocean that at one point covered the world. These flats are constantly wracked by storms and kick up great clouds of salt which whip through the air, tearing through clothing and filling the lungs of those unfortunate enough to breath it in. Most cities are positinoed away from these flats; atop mesas or deep underground.
- The Anvil: Above the planet is The Anvil, a massive shipyard whose capabilites are rented out to the highest bidder. Countless corporations own facitilities aboard The Anvil, drawn by the promise of cheap labor and low taxes.
POPULATION
- Native Species: None
- Immigrated Species: Humans, Many Near-Humans
- Population: Moderate - Estimated to be around 3 Billion
- Demographics: Primarily human with an estimated 15% of assorted near-human species.
- Primary Languages: Galactic Basic.
- Culture: Most people living on Jhalaan dwell inside the cities. These cities are a bustling hub of industry with great factories and mines which fuel the planet's industry. Outside of the cities life is hard, ruled by criminal cartels and syndicates who hord valuable resources such as food, water, and masks to maintain their power. Those who live outside the cities are usually hiding from something, or desire the freedom of the wilderness.
- Government: Authoritarian Republic: The Constabulary
- Affiliation: Independent
- Wealth: Medium
- Stability: Medium
- Freedom & Oppression: Citizens of The Constabulary have certain guarenteed rights and liberties; freedom of expression, the ability to vote in local elections for many government offices, and freedom of movement specifically. But the law is upheld vigorously and those who break the law are punished to the full extent allowed. Furthermore the elites of The Constabulary regularly weaponize the law against the populace to break dissent or reformist movements. Those who live outside the cities are practically unprotected. Most of these settlements are aligned with local gangs who in turn are vassals of much larger interstellar cartels. There are regular clashes between The Constabulary, who attempts to subjugate these settlements and relocate their populations into the cities, and the various gangs across the planet.
- Military: Jhalaan lacks significant space defenses, mostly a few dozen defense satellites in orbit and a small fleet of frigates to deter pirates from interfering with the system. Most of the ground forces of Jhalaan are the police, though they are well trained and well equipped. Their long history of fighting with interstellar cartels has hardened them as a group, and while not as much of a threat as a professional army they will certainly put up a fight.
- Technology: Galactic Standard
Jhalaan was first settled as a mining colony by the Pentastar Alignment. While lacking any truely valuable materials the planet's proximity to the Daragon Trail and vast riches of the materials needed for Durasteel and Quadanium Steel made it an ideal candidate for a vast mining industry. This lack of true importance saw it mostly unbothered throughout its history, especially with the smooth political operating of the planetary governor. Governor Samson Harbower was often overlooked for his less than stellar service in the military, yet as a politician he excelled. Through the planet's absorbption into the Imperial Remnant and then the Fel Empire he held onto power through smooth operating and competance in his role. Resources flowed steadily under his watch, and continued to do so when Samson's eldest son, Gabriel Harbower, was appointed as Governor in Samson's old age. Gabriel, having spent most of his life being his father's apprentice, held onto power through pure competancy. While not particularly charismatic, he always delivered results and kept his appointment even through Darth Krayt's coup and eventual defeat. His eldest daughter Sarai Harbower would receive a similar treatment of tutorship and would be appointed to the position in Gabriel's final years.
It is during Sarai's tenure as Governor that Jhalaan expanded dramatically. The Galactic Federation Triumvirate and the peace it brang to the space lanes saw the mines of Jhalaan expand dramatically. The foundation of the first true colonines along with factories, a proper space port, a militia, and a small fleet purchased by Sarai directly through her family's accumulated funds put Jhalaan officially on the map. Jhalaani Durasteel was shipped across the galaxy and Sarai's fortune doubled that of her father and grandfather as she expertly navigated the planet through the early stages of its post-mining world history. By the time of her death in 201ABY the planet hosted dozens of millions of citizens. She, in her dying breath, would appoint her youngest son Jeshwa Harbower as her successor. Jeshwa's two older brothers both assumed the eldest would succeed her, and the planet would quickly devolve into a strange succession crisis. Each of the three sons would attempt to gain legitimacy to their mother's position. Petitioning neighboring planets, business partners, and even the Triumvirate itself to intercede. Though little help came. Soon the three brothers were waging a private war against one another, with Jeshwa Harbower's eldest brother Maxim Harbower aligning with the Hutt Cartels and ultimately coming out on top. During Maxim's reign as governor the Hutt's established countless illicet factories, venues, and ports from which goods may be hidden on their way along the Daragon Trail. Maxim turned a blind eye, instead using the Hutt's muscle to prop himself up not only as Governor, but as the newly styled "Lord Protector" of Jhlaan. Maxim's closest friends would fill the seats of his government, establishing aristocratic dynasties that have continued into the modern era.
Jhlaan would be devastated by the Gulag Plague during Maxim's grandson's reign. Samson the Second was as incompetant as his father and grandfather before him, and only held onto power through brutal police actions against rival political groups and the cartels who sought to seize power during the chaos. It is during Samson II's reign that the government would be disbanded and reformed into The Constabulary, a true police-state who would weather the storm of the Gulag Plague through brutal utilitarian violence. It is Samson II Harbower that declared war against the cartels that his grandfather had permitted onto the planet, a war which continues to this day.
With the death of Lancel Harbower in 890ABY the planet has fallen into the hands of Samson IV Harbower, a brilliant strategist, businessman, and politican who has stewarded the planet through the turbulent times of the past few decades. Samson, a utilitarian leader, is not afraid of compromise whether it be with his own people or with the interstellar governments which rise and fall. So long as the Harbower's remain in control, any deal can be struck. The only people he is unwilling to compromise with are the criminals of his world. Samson IV Harbower has vowed to remove organized crime from Jhlaan, and he may even do it.
