For all its strength in strike, defense, and electronic warfare, the Corps possessed no dedicated reconnaissance platform — no fast, long-legged scout to range ahead of a formation, identify what waited there, and bring that picture home before the fleet committed. The Prowler's sensors served electronic warfare; the Nightshrike's deep-scan was a feature of an elite, rarely fielded multi-role bird. Nothing in the inventory existed simply to see first. The Harrier is that craft, and the new ISR designation it inaugurates marks reconnaissance as a discipline the Corps now fields in its own right.
Built on the three forward-swept panel array that gives it both its silhouette and its sensor reach, the Harrier mounts the SPX-Aetherveil suite at full capability — not the stripped auxiliary fit its strike-fleet cousins carry, but the complete long-range system: vessel-class identification, power and shield profiling, and subspace-ripple early warning, all available in a passive mode that reveals nothing of the Harrier's own presence.
