Following his fateful encounter with a powerful Dark Lord, Irdorax was on the brink of death but quickly recovered from the field of battle by a squad of Stormtroopers who acted quite sensible by bringing him into a medbay without delay, leaving the battle behind. There he was kept alive through simple power of will and emergency operations and life-support. His lungs were crushed, his stomach and intestants largely mush, one of his arms and both legs ceased to exist and only by the luck his head only received a deep scar nearly taking one of his eyes.
Considered to be a valuable asset and especially in regards to his unbendable willpower which made the former Sith nearly force the doctors to act, it was decided to give him an extensive life-support system encased in an armor. Their inspiration and also reference were the data available on the armored of infamous Darth Vader and they implemented a lot of its functions into this system, but not all were necessary as Irdorax wounds were not as severe as the ones of Vader. He could survive outside the suit for a decent amount of time, just not do that much.
The main factor were indeed improvements through cybernetics and to increase his physical potential, sacrificing agility for strength and reflexes. It was a statement in the Empire, for the new Empire, to make one of the most famous of its original enforcers and reconciled warriors a figure for the New Empire and New Order to come.
