Investments and Finery [Cordel | GUIDE Investor]

"Gabe! Gabe! He's replied! He wants to meet to discuss investment! Oh this is wonderful! Gabe are you listening?"

"Yippee."

"Don't be such a canker."

"The term you're looking for, Magpie-"

Magda sat at her desk, making faces as her brother spoke from his room across the hall.

"-is wanker."

"That's a terrible thing to call an Investor."

Dear Mr. Cordel,

Smiling brightly, she tapped out her reply to the missive received.

I'm delighted to learn of your interest in GUIDE. I will be traveling to Hypori and expect to arrive in one week's time. If it pleases you to arrange a lunch-time meeting I would be happy to bring some local vintage to share.

Sincerely,
Magdalena Lethe
GUIDE Founder

Money is what made the galaxy go round that was a well known fact and it was the spenders who kept the wheels turning. Lucien liked to think himself a spender that was why he had agreed to meet with [member="Magdalena Lethe"], her name was not one he knew and if he didn't know it he hoped no one else did. If she fell flat on her face there was no embarrassment but if she soared well then he discovered her. Such a discovery would catapult him up the social strata.

Dear Mdme. Lethe

Mr. Cordel would take great delight in hosting you in a week's time you are booked in for a private meeting at 12:30 and his calendar is clear to host you for as long as you should require. On the day if you report to the front desk a member of staff will escort you up to his offices as his floor requires access codes. In addition to the vintage Mr. Cordel wishes to see any documents or proposals etc. you have relating to guide.

Mr. Cordel Thanks you in advance for your punctuality,

Yours Sincerely
Levinia Lemande
Personal Secretary to Lucien Cordel

One week would pass by quickly enough. From the buzzing activity of Empress Teta along the shallow tail end of the Daragon Trail over past Coruscant where they swung into Corellian Run. Out along the Core and across the Colonies region where it whisked them off along trails both familiar and not.

Inner Rim.

Expansion Region.

Outer Rim.

Magda marveled over their far-away travels one long night while watching a holofilm with her brother.

"We've never been this far out without Pa before," she said meekly, blue eyes wandering from the screen to a nearby viewport where naught but hyperspace stars streaked by. Gabe, frowning, pulled an arm over his sister and gave her shoulders a squeeze ... then promptly stole the remaining popcorn in typical big brother fashion.

Wild Space.

Only by mere whim of living in the Outer Rim had they ever gone so close to the edges of the galaxy. Wild Space was unexplored by Lethe standards. Magda took notes along the way on ideal places for pit-stops, marking down those less-ideal as well. Before she knew it they'd swung off Corellian Run and passed beyond Tattooine - that mythical place of history.

"I want to go there on our way back," Magda said while seated in the pilot's chair, watching the gleam of the planet far off to her left.

"Why? It's just hot and full of sand."

"There's podracing. Didn't you say you always wanted to see a real podrace? Oh! Maybe we could recruit some new pilots for GUIDE..."

"Hm," said Gabe, rubbing thoughtfully at his chin, "I do want to see a real podrace..."

"So you want to go then?"

"Why not, we're already out here aren't we? What's the worse that could happen..." so many things that could happen, Gabe thought to himself.

"Yay! Oh I can't wait to see the market town. Do you think there will be thugs? Should I bring my little blaster pistol? I've never had to use it on a real person before..."

"Magie, fo-cus."

"Right. Hypori."

~~~~~~
"Hello, I'm Magdalena Lethe and this is my brother Gabriel. I have a 12:30 appointment with Mr. Cordel," the young lady smiled brightly. She'd taken some liberty in spending a bit of money on some nice suites for herself and Gabriel for occasions like this. Cordel was a prim and proper man, so she'd read in her research of the company, and if nothing else she was hoping to impress upon him that they were in this for the long haul. Nothing said I'm serious about my job than a well-tailored suit.
They waited in the foyer for their escort.
"Does my hair look OK Gabi? I can never get it as nice as Tasi. Hers is always so perfect."
"You look fine," Gabe replied, his own gaze swiveling around the interior of the building complex.
"Just fine? I mean, I didn't want to go overboard and make us look like millionaires, cause," she snorted, "who wants to invest in that?"
"We don't look like millionaires."
"No? Are you sure? We don't look shabby do we? Goff, I knew I should have picked ivory instead of seafoam, this outfit is all wrong. Mother would have-"
"Magie ... shut up."
"-rude."
"I think our escort is here."
[member="Lucien Cordel"]
To say that Gabriel Lethe was uncomfortable in his suit was to lie with blatant disregard for the reality at hand. He look fabulous in his suit, amazing, extraordinary and he was reasonably sure that the secretary at the desk had been checking him out for some time… yes, quite some time indeed.
Which was no surprise in itself, because who wouldn’t be checking out the young, rich and upcoming bachelor who was valiantly supporting and taking care of his young (and naive) sister?
Exac-
Oh Lord. Now he was the one who was allowing all of this shet to get up his head. Meggy was busy worrying about one detail to the next while he himself was pretending to be something that he was certainly not.
Millionaires? Ugh. How- why did he allow this to happen? And Gabriel was about to say something about this indignity, until his eye caught the excited (and slightly nauseated) expression on his sister’s face… which, in turn, softened his own gaze.
Hey, look.” the older (and bigger!) brother coughed softly. “We have come a long way since we got here, and you have been great. You deserve this.”
A scratch of the chin as Gabriel started to realize he was being far too genuine. Last thing he wanted was for her to have it get to her head.
We will be fine, but let’s be a bit careful here, alright? I can’t help but feel a bit… anxious around this Lord Cordel.”
[member="Magdalena Lethe"] [member="Lucien Cordel"]
The desk attendant looked up eyes drifting over the girl and the man, they looked sincere, well dressed they looked the part. That said one could never be too careful when people claimed to have appointments with Lucien. None the less they were in the system, She was therefore satisfied these people were legitimately among the lucky few who could secure an appointment.
she nodded up at [member="Magdalena Lethe"] "Welcome Madam Lethe, Mr. Lethe Mrs. Lemande will be with you in a moment"
Then she returned to work, she didn't have time to 'check out' [member="Gabriel Lethe"] and why would she want to fall apart over a man she'd never met anyway. No if he wanted her time he would need to do better than a suit. She put The Lethe siblings out of her mind they were after all just one of the many people she would have to deal with.
A moment or so later the elevator doors behind the security barriers opened and an austere looking woman stepped out. Levinia was a woman in her late forties with a face like a sour grape and a voice like a grater.
"Madam Lethe, Mr. Lethe, follow me " She called buzzing them both through the barriers. One could never be too careful, when it came to security not with all these whispers of a growing underworld. The well trained eye might notice a number of the staff wore side arms. She led them back to the elevator and punched in the code for top floor access. "Mr. Cordel was rather intrigued by your proposal" She added with a half smile, she largely ignored them otherwise. The journey didn't take long so there was no really need for small talk as far as she was concerned.
The elevator opened into a small sub office around which sat a large fish tank through which glimpses of Lucien's office space could be seen. straight facing them was a set of double doors through which the siblings were led. Lucien rose as they entered stepping out from behind his desk. "Welcome" he smiled offering his hand first to Magdalena then to Gabriel "I must say you intrigued me, would you like some tea?" He asked before gesturing to a subdued sitting area "Shall we begin, I'm sure you have a number of details to tell me about?"
"I would love some tea!" Magda replied brightly, white smile of clean and straight teeth greeting [member="Lucien Cordel"] upon introduction, "it's such an honor to meet you Mr. Cordel. I've read so much about your company - how fantastic it is to be here. Oh, and I brought you this," from the satchel over her shoulder she pulled a bottle of vintage Empress Teta wine.
"Red, semi-dry, robust and poignant fruit finish, easy on the pallet, goes well with red meat. Mm, incroyable!" a most impeccable High Coruscanti accent to boot, "Oh, and just as an aside, I'm not sure that your Assistant realizes her faux pas. She called me Madame - but I most assuredly am not an aged woman or married. Mademoiselle would be the correct term," it was at this point that she realized she was correcting the assistant of a potential Investor and her own social faux pas.
Probably not the best way to start a meeting.
"Ah," Magda gave a meek laugh and passed her gaze around the room before taking a seat, "but I'm flattered either way. Right...so, to business..."
[member="Gabriel Lethe"]
Lucien gave a mildly amused smirk at [member="Magdalena Lethe"] 's exclamation at his offer of tea. He had almost forgotten what it was like to be so young and excited. Normally he would have a server pour the tea but he was worried too many servants would be overbearing so he intended to just make do alone. A rare occurrence indeed. He brought over a pot and three cups on a tray and placed it on the coffee table, pouring first to Magdalena then to her brother and finally to himself. whilst he listened to Mags the sugar and milk began to add themselves to his cup, it seemed tea was the only victim of his mastery of the force these days.
Her comment about the honour of meeting him and the subsequent announcement of a gift earnt a proper smile from the sith Lord. "Why thank you Miss Lethe," he took the bottle from her, he was fond of most types of red "Empress Teta, I can assure you this will find it's way to my dining table before too long" He appreciated gifts, they appealed to his ego and his ego was very big. The gift had put him in a good mood and so infact did the acknowledgment of his assistants faux pas, he liked people with the spine to challenge him and his staff. That even earned a chuckle " I apologise on her behalf, low birth oft has a habit of rearing it's ugly head" He tapped the arm of his chair "She tries so very hard to hide the muck, She'll get the etiquette right eventually I'm sure" Lucien supposed she was a little old to be sent to finishing school.
He detected that his guest was feeling slightly embarrassed, a reasonable reaction even if it was unnecessary . "To business indeed, so tell me about GUIDE" he picked up his tea "Why should I give you money?"
[member="Gabriel Lethe"]
Gabriel was mostly the silent partner - at least when it came to the meetings that were being held with the investors.
Simply because he himself realized that Maggy was much better at the negotiation and convincing-stage, at least when she managed to get herself out of the “Oh no, I am so embarrassed!!”-stage that she so loved to get herself into.
Instead he was simply there… to be there for her. The GUIDE was mostly her pet project, he was content with enjoying the ride and seeing what kind of problems Mags would get them into and in the meanwhile he would support her in any way he could. Which mostly meant sitting there… quietly… listening… trying not to fall asleep and generally whenever she needed him to pat her on the shoulder and take over?
He would.
Which hadn’t happened yet, so Gabe was pretty confident in her ability to lead this conversation too… even if [member="Lucien Cordel"] was giving him a bad feeling.
Something about the low birth comment and the muck.
It might have sounded like a joke, but something told Gabriel that Cordel truly believed himself to be superior - which wasn’t really all that different from most other noblemen, so his feelings might amount to nothing after all.
Still, Megs always was too trusting. So being attentive would be a good step.
[member="Magdalena Lethe"]
The low birth and muck comments did not escape the notice of Magda either and even caused the young woman to pause for a moment. Much as that sort of thing may have bothered her, she had to be able to push aside personal interest for the bigger picture here.
The bigger picture here was GUIDE.
Suddenly she was extremely grateful for Gabriel's presence today. Having him here was reassuring, for if he did not support this project of hers he certainly would not be sitting there. A small smile etched its way into her expression as she felt her confidence return. Magda squared her shoulders, sat up a bit straighter and gently cleared her throat.
"Mr. Cordel, my father once said to me that A person of money is also often a person of knowledge. In these words and in my journey across the stars seeking out the means to building the GUIDE, I have found this quotation to be one of great truth. It takes knowledge and intelligence to earn a proper credit and in many cases it is knowledge that funds the very basis of our economy and gives the credit its value. In turn you might consider just how much you'd be willing to spend for knowledge. How much more would you be willing to spend knowing that the knowledge provided is up-to-date and relevant to your current position on the galactic map? To your destination?"
"The Galactic United Information Database Enclave thrives on the collective of knowledge throughout the galaxy. From system to system we find and collate the most relevant information to date - creating a uniform, connected web of information that far supersedes the low standards provided by the basic holonet resource."
[member="Lucien Cordel"]
Lucien noted the discomfort in both [member="Gabriel Lethe"] and [member="Magdalena Lethe"]. He could only assume they were somewhat taken aback by his comments on the underclasses. It was a harsh truth that not all in the world were equal, some people by nature of birth were born better and some like him fought tooth and nail to become better. The rest were lesser and he was more than willing to say as much.
Despite the small pause Mags did go on to give a rather good pitch, she regained her posture and maintained a gravities few could lay claim to. He was impressed.
"Your Father sounds to have been an intelligent and perceptive man " Lucien Mused with a smile. Intelligent people were hard to comeby, most were too poor or too fearful to have an impact ... too weak to break from the cess pit of mediocrity. A cess pit Lucien had not visited for many years. Lucien wondered just who Mags father was, was he weak like lucien's own father? or had Lucien just never been observant enough to hear of him? Pertinent questions but not appropriate at present.
Her opening pitch was one of Gloss and veneer and Lucien whilst enticed was not convinced. A pitch of principle on morality, both of those things were all very well but they didn't pay all that well on their own. "An enterprise of principle I'm sure ... most necessary" He began leaning across the coffee table to pick up a cigar and put it between his teeth as he lit it "I'm going to smoke I trust that causes no concern" He stated, not in the business of asking permission much anymore "Now as I was saying you have pitched to me of all the good you will do with my money and that is ... good" he took a drag before sending smoke piling up to the air vents in his office roof "But if goodness payed the bills I'd be the one needing investment ... I need cold hard financial facts what will you charge for the service guide provides? what are your projected earnings? In short will I ever see a return on my investment?"
Magda's smile did not waver. She knew those questions were coming. Cordel was a man of good and great fortune - naturally he would want to see where his investment would take him.
"Imagine, if you will Mr. Cordel, that you are a man standing on the brink of greatness. You've ideas in your head that you know are sound and feasible and useful but you just aren't sure of a proper outlet. On the day you decide to leave your home you are overwhelmed at the vast opportunities the galaxy has to offer - where do you go? Who do you see? What venues would best serve your interests and your skills? It's all a bit disconcerting, perhaps even a bit frightening. Then you discover something called The Guide."
"REMAIN CALM, it tells you, we are here to guide you."
"For a fee that will remain affordable to the average working citizen you can subscribe to The Guide and download the application directly to your own datapad. The Basic Subscription Package will give you access to all the knowledge The Guide has to offer. You're a man who has ideas for new droid tech, so on a whim you enter droid into the search. Within a few moments all relevant articles are linked to you, categorized by products, companies, local locations, and more. Now perhaps you decide, after reading up on the provided companies, that you'd like to start your own business instead. You've got a good mind for business, but maybe you just don't have the money."
"You need an investor."
"Who should be the first investment company to appear on your search?" Magda lofted a brow at Lucien, her smile curling upwards.
[member="Lucien Cordel"]
Listened listened as she continued on in her round about way. It was a good job he didn't charge for these consultations or she'd be talking away her assets. None the less lucien did like a good story so he tolerated her.
He listened to her hypothetical tale with some amusement. It didn't give him any harder facts than before she started. None the less he was as stated susceptible to a good story. She did also imply that he would be given priority advertising space. He smiled and raised his brow right back "How many investment Companies have received that self same offer and what did they promise in return ?" He asked, Priority search results didn't do anything if every tom, Dick or Harry who threw money in the pot got it. So he would throw money at her to cut the others out of the top bracket.
"Also just how much is the fee that 'will remain affordable to the average working citizen' ?" Added he was after all not the most charitable soul and though he was eager to invest he would only put up so much to fund pixie dust and Pipe-dreams of the little guy making it big, this fee was his only guarantee of a return afterall. He would have solid answers even if he had to sit here all day, He might need a fresh cigar mind.
He wandered how many other investors [member="Magdalena Lethe"] had. He wasn't much good at playing second fiddle so if he was to invest it would have to be far more than the others. In for a penny in for a pound that was his philosophy. He waited to raise these issues however until he had his earlier questions answered, The Lady before him seemed to have a tendency to over elaborate and he wanted concise answers so it was perhaps best not to overload her.
Without further ado Magdalena pulled a datapad from her bag and initiated the screen. It wasn't a running program of The Guide - not yet, that was in the works. Instead it was her notations on Fees, Profits, ROI, and the list of Investment Tiers.
"The correct answer is whichever investor has made the highest tier bracket, Mr. Cordel. Fees for Subscription Packages are projected to start at 55c a month with discounts on quarterly or annual packages - Basic level. This might perhaps seem low for the offering, but the idea is not to cut out the average galactic citizen - which would cut profits by a substantial percentage - but to maintain different levels of subscription depending on one's needs and available finances. The greater the need, the greater the offering, the higher the subscription fee."
"GUIDE currently has several Investors that have made significant contributions. As you can see on the list of Investment Tiers there are qualifying levels that offer greater ROI for you including GUIDE access, marketing and advertising for your company."
[member="Lucien Cordel"]
Lucien nodded taking the data pad with his free hand. Then it occurred to him he would need to put down hi cigar to scroll or risk burning his pants. He was unwilling to do either of these things. He resolved to make one of his interns earn their place. He whistled and by the power of his ego and extreme coercion behind the scenes an intern ran into the office.
"You ... Intern person, wanna see real life Investment Banking?" The intern nodded "Good come hold this data pad for me" Lucien replied. The intern looked disappointed but Lucien didn't care. He hummed a little as he read through the tiers "The Platinum level appeals to me but I can't risk 100 million on a start up ... not all in one go anyway" he liked to think he was big and very wealthy but 100 million credits was a lot of money. "I can give you 50 million now and a further 10 million every year for the next five years with a guarantee to renegotiate at the end of that period" Was his ego writing checks his body couldn't cash? Possibly but guide seemed profitable and the list of investors was quite a star studded affair. "I can make an officially unofficial promise to scale up investment at the end of those five years if business for guide is good"
As for the standard price of access to guide he was appeased with her strategy. She of course knew best on that front. nodded to the intern "Hand back Miss. [member="Magdalena Lethe"] 's data pad, tell my secretary to make a reservation for three at a nice restaurant and return to your duties " Lucien smiled to himself no doubt the boy learnt so much in his brief tenure at the top.
"I note that a number of your investors have offered other incentives beside currency , I can't offer you fuel or anything of that type but I do have connections to the foreperson of the Techno union and If you wished I could refer guide up and perhaps get you some heavier sponsorship from them and some of my other acquaintances" He shrugged, he admitted to himself that he was gunning above his weight going for top tier but in the union you went big or you went home.
The show of power playing out before her was as curious a spectacle as it was ...baffling. Was this what happened to people who came into a lot of money or was this simply the whim of a man who cared little for his underlings? She gave a brief glance to [member="Gabriel Lethe"] simply to see if he held the same reaction. Lucien, for all his Lordly powers, might've been able to tell...or maybe not, who knew his limits? Not she.
But Magda knew nearly every nuance of expression on her brother's face and she could certainly see it for what it really was, fake facade or not.
"This tea is lovely..." she remarked quietly over a slow sip as Cordel set himself up with his intern.
And no, she didn't mind the smoking. The scent of the cigar was quite strong and though it wasn't her preferred aroma it did wonders for a nostalgic mind. Her father didn't often partake but she recalled how wisened he looked when he did. The smell made her miss home and were it not for the offer Lucien put on the table she might've had to fight back the pang of lament.
Magda gently cleared her throat and set down her tea, "Thank you, Mr. Cordel. I would be happy to place you on our Platinum Tier with that offer," she paused as he posed one last offer. Something she had not quite expected. The Techno Union? Another glance to her brother out of surprise, Magda shifted in her seat, "That would be...much appreciated. We had not initially considered approaching the larger governmental entities simply out of virtue of our current start-up status. If you think the Union or your fellow business acquaintances would be interested I would gladly meet with its leading figureheads for discussion."
[member="Lucien Cordel"]
Lucien nodded at her compliment of the tea "Thank you, It's a custom Blend ... my Son commissioned a year's batch for my birthday last year" He smiled, no doubt that now his son was 7 years younger Lucie would not receive the same gift anytime soon.
He didn't note the awkwardness in either of his two guests, he was never very good at noticing the emotions of others.
snubbing the remains of his cigar into an ash tray. Lucien's own father had dabbled in Cigars and indeed Lucien was sad to see he was slowly becoming his father, that was disappointing. he had done so much to avoid such a fate but alas it seemed fate had a sense of humour.
As for the acceptance of his offer that brought a smile "Very good" He smiled being a platinum investor would be most prestigious and would go some distance in building up his name. "I will have to make some arrangements and such but I'll get back to you in due course on a date when you can pitch to the executive council" It would no doubt be of great benefit to the Techno union to invest in Guide. Afterall there's was a corporate theocracy "I can't promise they'll invest but I can't see why they wouldn't" He smiled then lent back "It seemed we are settled then, I'll have my accountants transfer the funds to you and handle the paperwork " Such trivialities bored Lucien.
"Shall we go out for a spot of lunch to celebrate and perhaps you can point me to some people who will be able to help me create some adverts and such things for GUIDE , I fear I'm not creative enough"
A bright smile stole Magdalena's expression as the mood seemed to lighten. This was all going rather splendidly - overwhelmingly so. She simply couldn't believe how quickly things had taken off for GUIDE and all it took was a bit of hard work and persistence. If they could land the investment of the Techno Union ... well, what couldn't they do?
Surely something of that magnitude would sway the likes of [member="Danger Arceneau"] and her galactic trade corporation.
She finished off her tea and replaced her datapad to her bag, looking up in a bit of surprise at the invitation to lunch. Goodness.
"Lunch would be lovely, thank you Mr. Cordel," Magda replied, pausing at his finishing statement and giving a nod, "I know of some people that can help with that. They're doing marketing work for GUIDE currently."
[member="Gabriel Lethe"] [member="Lucien Cordel"]
Lucien nodded, "Very good" He smiled, all the best arrangements were cemented over lunch and it was an informal setting to talk about these marketing people. He needed someone good the creation of art was never really one of lucien's strong suits better left to those who gifts lay in the area.
There was transport waiting outside the office for them, The restaurant Lucien was taking them too was perhaps the hidden gem of the capital, tucked away beneath the behemoth skyscrapers in a back street. It sat in a poor area and catered to a rather odd clientele. Its customer base knew of it either by the poverty that came with living in the area or the wealth required to be 'in' on the in places to visit.
entering the restaurant was quite the surreal experience to see men and women in patched together attempts at formal wear sat but a table over from people wearing one of a kind artisan jewelry. An onlooker might question why an oligarch of the type that made up the richer half of the clientele would suffer the poorer half and the answer was simple the poor ensured the place would never change, that it would never go 'Nouveau riche', this was the in place for the classy money and the poor helped it stay like that.
With the fear of losing exclusivity came rules on its maintenance the money entered via an underground carpark in the block behind and up a service elevator, for the aged wealthy this was quite the adventure. Lucien being secretly of new money didn't subscribe to that rubbish but the cloak and dagger entry did serve to provide a way to avoid the media.
"This place is quite something I hope you'll agree, cooks food of the kind my grandmother used to serve" he explained as the elevator made it's slow grinding progress to the restaurant floor.
[member="Magdalena Lethe"]
"How very haute couture," Magda commented, smilng to herself as she looked about the lift. Though their parents had been comfortably wealthy it was not often that Magda and her siblings participated in such extremes. Dipping behind the facade of a building to escape the press - there were certain things that a gal could only dream of needing to do!
"What sort of food did your grandmother used to serve?" That's right, Magie, take an interest in your investor. Invest in his interests, too! The best way to forming a productive working relationship was to be interested, after all. That was the whole point.
[member="Lucien Cordel"]
"It is isn't it" he smiled as the lift ground it's way up to the restaurant. Lucien enjoyed being seen in this restaurant it marked him as part of an elite club that could be very useful when one was trying to manipulate a business person. Lucien was also probably free from press attention however one had to be cautious the scandal of a fall from the inner circle of fine dining could ruin him.
Lucien pondered Magie's question a moment. In truth Lucien's grandmother had been woefully inept at cooking, when she did cook it was either very poor or no more complex than a sandwich. Her cook did most of the cooking. Lucien hated that cook. No blue milk, no cookies before dinner and his Grandmother always seemed to be taking part in a fad diet " Pie, pasta ... that ilk lots of meat plenty of starch, hearty food " Lucien chuckled as the doors opened on the restaurant. Lucien gestured for [member="Magdalena Lethe"] to enter ahead of him.
They were quickly sat down and handed menus "so tell me about yourself Miss Lethe" Lucien remarked looking over his menu.
