Strengths:
  • Capacity: The Inferis-class is able to facilitate the needs of 300 prisoners with holding cells, garment fabrication facilities, hydroponics bays, and even dedicated mess halls. As well, the prison ship is able to comfortably house its rather small crew, droids, and security personnel.
  • Versatility: The individual holding cells contained in most of the Inferis' central mass utilize a highly modular design which allows them to be removed or quickly reconfigured for various purposes (as 2-prisoner holding units, solitary confinement cells, or even as interrogation facilities.)
  • Security: Supplementing the organic and droid security personnel aboard Inferis-class vessels are vast networks of cameras and sensors which can be monitored from a secured wing of the bridge.
  • Scanning and Communications: To supplement less-than-remarkable defenses, the Inferis-class is equipped with an advanced long-range communications suite to notify allies of troublesome developments and to otherwise keep a steady link to friendly forces. As well, the vessel has been granted an extensive array of scanners as to warn its crew of impending attack.
Weaknesses:
  • Defenses: The Inferis-class is merely armed with a combined 12 dual laser cannons, hardly enough to provide defensive coverage of its entire profile, and surely not enough to repel hostile military vessels. The vessel's shielding is similarly limited; its civilian-grade deflectors are hardly equipped to withstand much punishment.
  • Maneuverability: Should an Inferis be unable to execute a hyperspace jump while under attack, it would have little hope of evading enemy fire; its sparse network of maneuvering jets struggle while pushing against the mass of its spaceframe.
  • Exposed Bridge: The Inferis' bridge is located directly at the bow of the vessel, presenting a prime target for hostile invaders.
History and Description:

Ultimately, a faction is a fragile, and high-maintenance creature. For every inch of bustling territory it controls, for every grandiose fleet its has at its disposal, there must always be a capacity to fulfil what some would consider less-glamourous tasks. Cargo must be ferried from world to world on long, uneventful voyages; warships must be refueled and resupplied constantly; all manner of criminals must be contained. Recognizing this element of sentient nature, the Intergalactic Shipping Collective drafted plans for the Inferis-class Prison Barge. In four months, the first vessel would be purchased by the Galactic Alliance, with new acquisitions from a variety of governments and planetary defense forces to follow.

The nature of the vessel's existence necessitated a design that could reliably ferry an organization's prisoners across its territory, either depositing its living cargo within land-based prison installations or aboard orbital containment facilities. And while the Inferis-class met these requirements with flying colors, its designers also saw fit to design the barge as one of the aforementioned facilities in and of itself. With hydroponics bays, an expansive gym, and garment fabrication devices to supplement its 400-prisoner capacity, the vessel could quite easily be repurposed as a dedicated prison. And it was in this role that the vessels were often seen, while taking advantage of their mobility by jumping between systems to either release or accept prisoners.

The outward appearance of the Inferis-class largely resembles the now-ancient New Republic's Correctional Transport, though a good deal more massive and advanced. Its prow is primarily occupied by the vessel's crew quarters, bridge, and the majority of its other standard shipboard facilities. Further aft, and occupying the middle section of the craft are the rows of holding cells and the necessary facilities to sustain their operation, including the hydroponics bay and prisoner mess hall. At the far aft of the Inferis is its engineering section, responsible for overseeing the transport's primary ion drives and its droid construction facilities. An underslung hanger bay is located adjacent to this section, providing ample space for the vessel's complement of shuttlecraft.
