Description:
The Imperator class Turbolaser is a large caliber capital ship weapon with outstanding damage potential and a high rate of fire. It was designed as an alternative weapon for the Imperial Navy to utilize where the cumbersome Heavy Long Range Turbolasers would be inappropriate. As such, the weapon sports an identical 'per shot' damage potential when compared to a Heavy Long Range Turbolaser, but with a significantly higher rate of fire and, consequently, a significantly shorter range. Also, since the weapon lacks the delicate mounting and advanced targeting and tracking systems required to engage targets at extreme ranges, engineers were able to incorporate significantly higher tracking speeds into the design. Though originally designed to fire a burst of twenty high powered shots in rapid succession, limitations with the weapon's coolant system have reduced this. In practice, commanders and gun crews have found two different weapon setting to be most effective with this gun. By lowering the power settings and rate of fire by one-third, crews are able to safely operate the weapon at a speed of one shot every 3 seconds indefinitely, so long as ammunition remains. Alternatively, when keeping the weapon's rate of fire and power settings at their standard levels, gun crews are able to fire a burst of six or seven high powered shots over ten seconds before allowing a twenty second cooldown period. When operating at full power settings, the Imperator class Turbolaser proves to be four times as powerful as a standard turbolaser, or twice as powerful as most 'heavy turbolasers'. However, due to the weapon's rapid burst of energy interfering with the cannon's own targeting systems, the weapon proves to be inaccurate at long ranges when utilizing the burst firing method and is only advised at medium and close ranges. When operating at its two-thirds power setting, the Imperator class Turbolaser proves to be roughly two and a half times as powerful as a standard turbolaser and has proven to be very accurate at long ranges.

Dual Cannon Turret variants of this weapon are able to utilize three fire control settings. The first two settings utilize the sustained fire setting mentioned above, which fires each barrel at a rate of one shot every 3 seconds. While on the sustained fire setting, a dual cannon turret will either fire in alternating bursts to sustain a near-constant stream of fire, or will fire in twin-linked bursts for maximum penetration and stopping power per shot. The third fire control setting utilizes both cannon barrels firing identical six or seven round bursts of laser fire over ten seconds at the maximum power setting, then pausing for 20 seconds between firings for the barrels to cool down.

Quad Cannon Turret variants of this weapon are able to utilize five different fire control settings. The first three fire control settings utilize the sustained fire setting of the Imperator Turbolaser, which fires each barrel at a rate of one shot every 3 seconds. On the first setting, four identical shots are fired from each barrel simultaneously for maximum penetration and stopping power per shot. On the second setting, two barrels are fired at a time in an alternating pattern that allows for a near-constant stream of fire and superior damage and penetration potential than a pair of dual cannon turrets would have on a target. On the third setting, each barrel is timed to fire 750 milliseconds after the last barrel, creating a constant stream of fire from the turret. The fourth and fifth fire control setting for this type of turret utilizes the burst laser fire setting of the Imperator Turbolaser. For the fourth fire control setting, the turret crews operate the weapon as if it were a pair of dual cannons, firing each pair in alternating six or seven round bursts over ten secondswith a five second delay between the silencing of one pair and the firing of the other pair. In the fifth and final fire control setting, all four weapon barrels are fired at their maximum power setting for ten seconds before allowing twenty seconds of cooldown before firing the weapon once again. When utilizing the fifth fire control setting, the weapon system is firing a burst of energy equivalent to 96 turbolasers firing at a single area over a ten second period of time. While the damage potential is impressive, the extreme levels of interference on the weapon's own targeting systems causes this fire control setting to be wildly inaccurate at long and medium ranges and is only advised for very close ranges.

Didn't think a long range turbolaser hit like four turbolasers? (2)

I think I've already developed an effective counter:

Hang on, I'm losing myself a little in the opening paragraph.

Could you please outline each firing mode clearly, with a bullet point for each please? A straight forward:
  • Mode, Rate of Fire, Power, Range
Would make this infinitely easier to read.

The modifiers for Long Range Turbolasers is 2x for damage and 3x for Range coming in at a 5x total modifier. That's what Ayden and I came up with when it was originally proposed as a standard armament option. Adding a 'Heavy' modifier to that created 2x2 modifiers for damage (hitting for the damage of 4 Turbolasers) and 2x3 modifiers for range (where the remaining 6/10 value comes from).

If you really want a laugh, remember that Hypervelocity guns are effectively Heavy, Long Range Mass-Drivers. 4x damage and 6x range. So a Heavy, Long Range Hypervelocity Gun? 4x2x5 Damage (40), 6x2x5 Range (60)... Meaning that a dual Umi Ganzu Cannon, at 30 points, does about as much damage as a 100 point HLR Hypervelocity Cannon (or a Particle Beam Cannon, that claims to do the same damage as the former).

sure. One sec.

What are you considering the base sustained ROF for a regular turbolaser?
I've yet to find a reliable and realistic source on that matter. And we all know the movies only do 'so good' at it. Each video reference shows a different rate of fire based on what that particular director thinks looks best. God help us if Michael Bay ever gets a hold of a Star Wars movie.

The Umi Ganzu Cannon is the only sub I can find that specifically states a reasonable and realistic rate of fire for a weapon of its size. So I'm basing the rate of fire of this weapon with how it compares to that Turbolaser variant. Nothing on Wookieepedia really specifies "X number of shots over Y period of time." And the links I provided above were some of the most detailed and specific wookieepedia pages I could find.

BUT! Let's try anyway.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lchA-lwqrPw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWoGkrt5Upg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYPmuWiEvTE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbn-Ox1XawI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPZigWFyK2o

In each of these videos, it appears as if only a few individual turrets are being used at a time. As an average, each Turbolaser in the videos appears to be firing once every 4-8 seconds. Keep in mind though, there doesn't appear to be any 'specific' standard. Which is appropriate, because (as the wookieepedia pages tell us) different Turbolaser variants had different damage profiles, effective ranges, and rates of fire. In the third video (at the 1:35 mark), you get to see a very close image of a battery of twin-barreled Turbolasers firing at what appears to be a rate of 1 shot every 5-6 seconds. In the first video, you see a VERY close range fight between two ships. At the 13 second mark, you get a good view of these ships opening fire at each other. You see the left-most turret on the Venator-class Star Destroyer fire what appears to be a two twin shots in rapid succession followed by a 3 second pause before firing a single twin shot. That's... something like 3 shots per barrel over a period of 6-8 seconds.

For purposes of Gun Math and Weapon Consolidation? It's valued at 2x standard levels. Simple and vague, which is how we like it around here... because thinking hard is a pain in the butt.

For roleplay values? It does what it's described as doing. Because that makes it interesting.

In your summary, could you please add a "sustained ROF" relative to standard turbolasers please?
I'm not sure I understand what you mean here... Under the Rate of Fire section of the template, I already have that included... I think. The summery is where I clarify what that specifically entails.

In the summary section... each barrel has the same rate of fire as the cannon itself. The 'shots per second' in the summary explains the overall effect for the turret as a whole, with all weapon barrels taken into consideration.

So what I'd like to make this nice and simple to review is:

Sustained ROF: 2x standard turbolaser

Or along those lines.

I tried to comply with this. I really did.

But if I comply with this request, it will make the summary section less clear and strait forward and more complicated. The way it stands, when reading the summary section it is easy to take in the effects of the turret at a glance and move on. If I change it to what you're suggesting, people will read it and then have to think about what that means or PM me and ask what it means. And honestly, with one of the fire-control settings being a 'burst of shots' followed by a cooldown period... there is no simple way to relate the burst fire mode to a 'rate of fire in relation to a normal turbolaser'.... which.... would make the entire formatting of the summary section feel awkward. And my OCD wont allow that.

  • Quad-Burst: Burst Mode, Short Range, one quad pulse every 30 seconds, 4x turbolaser damage (per shot)

Which... like I said... is more difficult to understand while reading. At least to me anyway. And I hate the way it reads. The summary section is there to give a strait forward accounting of how the weapon functions. What you're asking for is already clearly labeled under the Rate of Fire section. And.... you asked for a clearly labeled summary section so that the sub would be easier to read... But... what you're asking for now is counter-productive to that... in my eyes anyway. And... frell. I just hate the way it looks.

Like... I can kinda see why that would make it better if all you want to do is gloss over the actual mechanics of the sub and put everything into relation to capital ship gun math... But that makes it.... a fairly crappy sub. And defeats the purpose of making unique subs. If all I wanted was gun math, I'd have just slapped "Heavy, Heavy, Repeating Turbolasers" on a ship submission.

Like... the only edits you've asked for so far are given with the explanation that they will make them easier for you to read and understand and easier for you to review 'if formatted a specific way'. Everything is already clearly labeled and organized in a manner that is aesthetically pleasing... All that should be left for this submission is a review for balance and fair play.

Honestly man, if you're just doing this because you're having a hard time understanding my writing, you an PM me and I can find a shorthand that you can get. So this can actually get a review in terms of balance and we can move on. Because... none of the edits you've asked for are in relation to or effect balance.

I made my own. The first thing that's apparent is your maths seems a bit off on the sustained rotating mode for the 4 cannons. I assume you mean one shot every 750 milliseconds?

! Ouch. Yeah, I messed that one up. I was thinking there were 60 miliseconds in a second... for... yeah. Fixing now.

I hope you can see I'm not trying to be mean here, just trying to reconcile the descriptions and the numbers presented and to ensure the damage potential is balanced with the cost :)

Oh, I know your not trying to be mean man. I was just getting flustered earlier. I wanted to comply with the request but I just.... I really hated how it flowed when I read it again after making the edits.
