Illyria (Aeris Tyrai)

Name: Ilyria – Alias and name for the Goddess of Death. Birth name Aeris Tyrai.
Loyalties: Darth Shadow, herself.
Role: To be an apprentice to Darth Shadow, and be his personal agent.
Development Threads: Yes. Introduction there.
Age: 78
Species: Eldorai
Force Sensitivity: Yes, Sith Apprentice.
Appearance: Ilyria is not too different from most Eldorai. She is tall and slender, with pale golden hair and blue eyes. She bears the usual Eldorai pointed ears and long hands. She does have some unique markings though. A deep scar runs across her left cheek, and even repeated medical treatments have not fully erased it.
Illyria tends to wear long, flowing robes which cover her as much as possible. She tends to wear gloves and boots where possible, and tends to favour concealing hoods. Her hair is tightly secured behind her head to prevent it getting in the way.
Personality:
Though she has come a long way from her youth in Kaeshana, Illyria retains some of the most recognisable habits of her culture. Specifically, she has a very calm, aloof manner, especially dealing with non-Eldorai. Though exposure to the galaxy has tempered her views, she is still rather sexist concerning female superiority. This naturally makes her relationship with her Master rather curious. However, she seems to have justified this by classifying him as asexual as the Sith Lord has no interest at all in such matters.

It is clear to an outside observer that Illyria has some deep seated anger issues. Having been forced from her home and forced to literally beg to get by has made her cynical, even cruel. She sees the galaxy as a collection of threats and opportunities. Those who she does not fear she seeks to exploit.

Though ruthless at times and willing to use expedients to get her objective, Illyria does have a code of ethics she follows. She does not strike down the weak and helpless unless it gains her an advantage. She is also not given to pointless or gratuitous cruelty, and will give opponents who fought well a clean death.

Illyria chooses not to use her very good looks to seduce others to get information, choosing to conceal herself where possible with heavy clothing. This relates to a dark time in her life where she was forced to do this to survive, and the memory fuels her anger, as does the deep scar on her face. She reacts very poorly to anyone who tries to seduce her, though she is not as asexual as her Master or she would have the galaxy believes. The difference is that if she initiates contact she feels in control and can express her passions in that way.
Weapon of Choice: Illyria carries a single bladed purple lightsabre and a concealed vibroblade hidden in a wrist sheath. She also, of course, uses the Force, covered below in skills.
Wealth: Though given a cut of her Master’s profits, Illyria is not wealthy at all.
Combat Function:
Illyria is the ‘Maul’ to Shadow’s ‘Palpatine’ in that she works as his hand and enforcer. However, her combat function is not one of direct, brute force. Rather, Illyria uses her race’s strengths to her advantage, using her agility to keep out of danger and attack unexpectedly. Though she disdains ranged weapons, Illyria relies mainly on the Force to strike at the enemy. Close in she uses her lightsabre defensively to parry and deflect using Soresu to allow her Force talents better reign.

Strengths:
  • Agility: Illyria is an Eldorai and thus more nimble and dextrous than a human. Able to escape harm by retreating or move quickly and quietly.
  • Force Strength: Illyria has powerful potential, blending the traditional Eldorai elemental talents with more regular Sith skills.
  • Ruthless: Illyria is more than capable of using and disposing of people as required. She will do practically anything to achieve her goals.

Weaknesses:
  • Weak: Even for an Eldorai, Illyria lacks in pure physical presence and strength compared to a human. In combat she fights defensively in melee where possible.
  • Ideological Imbalance: There is a reason few Eldorai have become Sith (or Jedi) – they rely on a view of the galaxy alien to an Eldorai. This means that although Illyria accepts Shadow’s training and skills, ideologically she is not a true believer in the Sith ideals.
  • Reserved: An introvert by nature, Illyria’s past has made her reluctant to seek out others as allies or to use her considerable physical attractiveness in the role.
Skills:
  • Form III (Soresu) – Advanced
  • Form I (Shi-Cho) – Basic

Other Notes:
Eldorai love political intrigue as much as any species in the galaxy. Unfortunately, these Byzantine machinations often have real personal costs involved. This was the case with the Tyrai family, whose fall from grace was sadly not uncommon.
Kaeshana, in the decades before the planet’s opening to the galaxy was a reactionary place. The current queen’s mother, Tirathana VI, stubbornly tried to keep the Eldorai out of the galaxy. Thus she used the Angelii and political expedients to tamp down on anyone who dared suggest accommodation with the off-worlders. She had the not illogical fear that if the Eldorai opened themselves up to the galaxy then they would turn away from their traditional beliefs and values.

The Tyrai family were minor status nobles in the far south of Kaeshana. They administered a patch of land in the name of the Star Queen, and were charged with its upkeep, collections of tithes and defending the area. Slavery and pirates had proved quite an issue, and raids especially on the outlying areas were becoming more common as Eldorai weakness became known.
Into this situation young Aeris was born, the youngest of three daughters. She grew up in relative wealth and received a good education. For the first forty years of her life she lived almost without incident. Her Sciiac abilities were detected early and she was enrolled with the Angelii for training to control her powers.

When she was 43 though everything changed. In that year the Red Eyes slavers came to Kaeshana in greater numbers than ever before. They invaded the southern areas, and Annea Tyrai – Aeris’ mother – tried to oppose them, but with outdated weaponry she had no chance. In desperation she accepted the aid of a smuggler crew who offered their aid for a considerable price. Together, they launched an ambush, with the smugglers using their ship’s weapons to disable and distract the slavers so that the Eldorai could get close enough for their Sarixi and Sarzmigars to take effect. The battle was a great victory, but cost the Eldorai of that fief a considerable amount to pay their allies.

The reaction Annea got when she reported the victory was astonishing though. She was ordered to appear before the Star Queen, and Angelii were sent to ensure her appearance. When brought before the Queen she was treated as a traitor rather than a hero. Her alliance with the outsiders was judged heretical (since off-worlders were still considered demonic apparitions…officially anyway) and she was accused of organising the raid.
The motive behind this was not hard to discover – one of the Queen’s favourites was a neighbouring magnate who saw this chance to be rid of a rival and to seize her territory. She had falsified documents and spread tales of treason into the paranoid old Queen’s mind.

Therefore the Tyrai family was sent to join their ‘friends’ offworld, being taken in an Eldorai ship to the nearest inhabited system and literally fired in an escape pod at it.
A sad irony is of course that the Eldorai were only a few years away from having to accept the existence of aliens when a Jedi-led expedition negotiated terms. By then, for the Tyrai family, it was far too late.

The nearest planet was Quesaya a mining world run by ruthless corporate types. Very soon the Eldorai family found themselves forced to work in grim and hard conditions. Already unused to such rigors because of their upbringing, they were further hampered by their genetic weakness compared with humans. In order to spare themselves such suffering the owners of the mine operations allowed them to ‘entertain’ the workers instead. One particularly drunk and vicious miner cut her face badly when she refused his requests. For Aeris this humiliation fed a burning anger, but she could not summon her Sciiac powers to strike her enemies.

In another ironic twist it would be the same slavers who had inadvertently caused their fall from grace which would unexpectedly aid the family. Driven off Kaeshana, the Red Eyes had sought a weaker target, and a few years after that defeat came to the mining world. There they broke into the facility, killing or capturing many. With the help of a forewoman who had always been sympathetic to them, the family escaped in the confusion aboard a freighter.

What followed was a long odyssey for many years around the galaxy. The impoverished family moved first to Denon, but the planet’s zombie problems forced them to leave for Corellia, then Coruscant. By this time, the factions of the Republic and Protectorate were arising, but for the desperate family little changed. Conditions in Coruscant were always poor, and Annea was killed in a gang related bombing. With her eldest sister leaving to join a ship crew and the middle sister leaving to try and return home, Aeris took a job with a merchant craft and left Coruscant. She never saw her sisters again.

In the years afterwards Aeris wandered the galaxy, poor, alone and angry. She avoided other Eldorai and developed her Sciiac powers in private, though let no one know she had such gifts. It was a few years before the present when she was encountered by the Sith Lord Darth Shadow. The Sith, her powers concealed and pretending to be a simply businessman named Quoll Levert, saw the anger in the Eldorai and hired her to translate some documents. Cunningly he had mixed in some documents among the regular translations certain to anger her further. Stories of her former enemies, stories of the death of her sister, and the doom of Kaeshana.

When at last he confronted her and offered to train her, Aeris initially refused. The Sith was male, his beliefs were strange and illogical, and she did not want to use her powers. However, Shadow was cunning and worked on her desire for revenge and power. He told her that he would make her stronger than any Eldorai, and that the Dark Side would give her true strength.

And so, at last, Aeris relented. Her name changed to Illyria, the Eldorai Goddess of the Underworld, and what part of her still looked backwards to Kaeshana withered. With the literal destruction of Kaeshana recently, she seeks to learn and grow from the Sith Lord, even if she is not fully convinced of the values he teaches. Whether one day this will prove to be a point of conflict remains to be seen.

Intent: To create an NPC apprentice for Darth Shadow. As the Sith Lord rarely goes into the field himself, this gives him someone to use and to operate for him. As creator of the Eldorai, I have not yet made a Sith of them, and it will be interesting to see through RP whether this character is interesting enough to promote to full character status.
In terms of abilities she is a fairly standard Sith Apprentice with some specialist Eldorai skills added in.

So I see no issues with this submission after reading it over a second time and reading the dev thread. It might be a bit thin, but as you point out, it's just an introduction to the apprentice.
