Followers of the Rapture - Submitted

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Organization Name: Followers of the Rapture
  • Classification: Cult
  • Affiliation:
    • Self-affiliated
      • Generally distrusting of those who are outside of the group
    • Purrgils
  • Organization Symbol: The swirl of hyperspace within a circle. The symbol is bronze and white.
  • Description:
    • The Followers of the Rapture are a cult who utilize the effects of Hyper-Rapture to receive visions. These visions, which are very difficult to interpret, are said to lead to a mysterious world that is strong in the Force (whether or not this is true is still unknown.) The group has a close connection with Purrgils, as they are the ones who supposedly know how to reach this planet.
GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
  • Headquarters: Ring of the Rapture
  • Domain:
    • Hall of the Last Sight - Mezokara, Moon of the Coral Dawn
      • Coral cave on the moon where a sect of Followers ventured to try and further expand their visions.
      • Overall neutral relationship with the locals of Mezokara. The Followers more often than not just keep to themselves.
    • Small sects set up all across the Scar Worlds and the Tingel Arm
  • Notable Assets:
    • No other notable assests or special locations
SOCIAL INFORMATION
  • Hierarchy:
    • There is a lose chain of command within the cult. Those who are strong in the Force are typically the ones in charge, because they are able to withstand the strains of Hyper-Rapture better than people who are not Force sensitive. Since they can withstand the madness which Hyper-Rapture can lead one to, they are able to see fragmented visions of the mysterious planet which they believe holds all of the secrets to hyperspace. There are individuals though who are not Force sensitive but still have a strong resistance to the pains of Hyper-Rapture, so they are able to view the visions as well.
    • The remainder of the people who have a harder time viewing the mysterious planet in their minds typically fall lower in the chain of command. The still contribute as much as they can whether it is through even more fragmented visions, flying ships towards where the Followers believe the planet they are searching for is, or keeping the Ring of the Rapture operational.
  • Membership:
    • There are currently a few thousand Followers of the Rapture.
    • The general obscurity of the cult is what keeps the numbers of the group so limited.
    • Those who join are typically recruited by other Followers who frequent various starports and moons. They are looking for those who are interested in finding the hidden powers of the galaxy through the hidden planet that infests their visions. Anyone who has the same goals and desires is welcome to join and provide assistance in any way they can.
      • Force sensitives are often recruited more than those who are not Force sensitive. But those who are attuned to the Force may still join.
  • Climate:
    • Distrusting of those who are outside of the cult. Many hear of the Followers' mission and pass it off as a laughable cause, so that is why those people remain neutral in terms of relationship with the Followers. But those who are interested and believe in their mission are more than welcome to join, as long as they help contribute in some way. Once you join the cult, the mood is friendly and helpful, as everyone has the same goal in mind.
  • Reputation:
    • The group is seen as quirky and strange from an outsider's perspective. Most do not understand purpose and mission of the Followers, and they do not take the time to try and get to know it. So that is why the Followers are talked about in an odd sense. But typically, there is not resentment held towards the members from outsiders. Only a slight feeling of wariness due to the lack of knowledge people outside of the cult have. From the galaxy at large, there is no consensus of opinion about the Followers, only because in the grand scheme of life there are so few who align with this cult.
  • Curios:
    • Members carry necklaces or other small trinkets made out of Purrgil bones. The Followers themselves do not kill the Purrgil to obtain their bones, as they hold a deep respect and appreciation for them. Instead, when deemed appropriate, Followers will venture out to a Purrgil graveyard and collect a small bone fragment to create their own curio.
    • While not required, most members typically wear cloth that is bronze or orange in color.
  • Rules:
    • The Followers of the Rapture are not allowed, either intentionally or unintentionally, allowed to harm a Purrgil in any way. Doing so will mean immediate banishment from the cult. In some cases, depending on the severity, those who harm the Purrgil may be put to death by the Followers.
    • Those who receive visions through Hyper-Rapture must share them with the rest of the group. No one is allowed to keep their visions to themselves if they hold significance in terms of their mission.
    • No one may kill another Follower. Self-defense is allowed, but only in justifiable cases. The only exception to this rule is those who harm the Purrgil.
  • Goals:
    • To locate the mysterious world that fills their visions through the effects of Hyper-Rapture.
    • Once the planet has been located, the Followers want to seek whoever the creator of hyperspace is, because they believe they live on this planet. They don't want to take control of hyperspace. They just simply want to learn about where it comes from and understand it.

    • [ What are the goals of this organization? Future plans for expansion? Collection of information? Providing education to those who seek it in certain skills? Supporting charitable works? For all intents and purposes, this is your in-character intent with this organization. ]

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
(Expanded from here for some background info.)

Eons ago, the Celestials created hyperspace.

No one understands how they were able to construct this type of technology, but it was one of their crowning achievements. The ability to venture across the stars in a fraction of the time. But it allowed them to travel all across the galaxy, laying claim to numerous planets and systems. Since traveling this way through the stars was so new, the Celestials decided to create a map that could only be viewed by staring into the blue-white swirl of hyperspace. They were able to view the swirl perfectly, while others would fall into insanity if they looked for too long. This madness would soon be known as Hyper-Rapture, a name giving by the earliest space-faring species. As time went on, these species eventually gained visions from this madness, though none could interpret what they meant.

The map would lead back to the home of the Celestials. During this time, Abeloth was mutated and born, forcing the Celestials to leave their planet behind. The world now became a prison for the monster. But the visions remained the same through the rapture. Many attempted to understand what they saw. Studies were done and classes were taught, but no answer was revealed. Abeloth did all she could to enhance the "signal" of the map through the Force, spreading it to as many as she could. If people were to find her planet, then she would be able to escape.

A few hundred years after the imprisonment of Abeloth, the theory of what Hyper-Rapture was started to expand. People were determined to understand what visions they were seeing, as well as finding the location in which the map led. That is how the Followers of the Rapture formed. The group started off small, with only fifty spacers and astronomers joining together in the pursuit of adventure. Eventually more and more members started to join, until there were a few thousand actively seeking to understand the visions. Some were driven into madness because of how often they were engaging in the rapture. Plus, it was dangerous to have ships fly to all corners of the galaxy for hours upon end.

To combat this, the Followers of the Rapture built the Ring of the Rapture. A huge structure is built around the yawning mouth of a black hole. The station was able to enter hyperspace while spinning in a circle, pulled in by the black hole. Now the Followers were able to view hyperspace while staying in one place. The station has been around for a few millennia, with all Followers having experienced Hyper-Rapture at least once because of it. The Followers are obsessed with finding out the secrets of their visions. None were after the "power" in which others rumored was upon the planet they were searching for. The cult was more so fascinated with this from an astronomical anomaly standpoint. Members of the cult loved to venture all across the stars. So, finding a new stellar location that none had ever seen before consumed their thoughts. Whether for better, or for worse.

In their visions, the Followers believed that the Purrgils were the "guides" to this mysterious location. Somehow, they were the only ones who were able to travel to the world. This was because the Purrgils were sent to be the protectors of Abeloth's World. Granted Force-sensitivity by the Celestials, the Purrgils encircled the planet, ensuring the Abeloth had no way to escape. The world was surrounded by black holes, making travel extremely difficult. Purrgils were the only ones (supposedly) who could navigate the maw. Followers of the Rapture were very protective of the Purrgils for this very reason.

Mid 890ABY saw the Ashlan Crusade venture out toward the Ring of the Rapture, in hopes to study and take control of it. At this point in time, the Followers of the Rapture had shrunk in size. But with this new faction fly out towards the station, the Followers took it as a reason to take control once more and start recruiting once again for their cause. The Ashlan Crusade eventually lost control of the system, allowing the cult to resume their visioning once more.

This did not stop researchers from visiting the station though. While the Followers were distrusting of outsiders, they understood that people still wanted to learn and understand, just like they did. Keeping under the disguise of being old and abandoned, the Followers try to remain in secrecy, but it did not last for long. A group of researchers visited the station, seeking to understand the effects of the visions. Graciously, the Followers offered some of their equipment and writings so that they could be studied by others. Unfortunately, the research vessel was attacked, causing the gear to become lost.

Some of the Followers get lost in their own visions, falling into madness. The few who do are kicked out of the group, forced to make their own way. In their crazed state, they travel to nearby systems, such as Mezokara. They attack others and loot from their homes, now desperate to find anything that will replicate their visions, whether it works or not. Those lost members are even willing to kill in order to find answers. None are ever found though. Enraptured by these visions, they terrorize anyone they come across. Retreating into the depths of the moon's oceans, the lost Followers set up camps of their own, the madness still holding onto them tightly. Now mutated in the Force, just like Abeloth, the Followers on Mezokara caused trouble with anyone who dared enter. Sometime in early 900ABY, Brooke Waters Brooke Waters and Cato Fett Cato Fett got into a skirmish with this group of lost Followers, quickly dispatching them.

During this time, tension broke out amongst the cult. Followers started to divide into factions, the visions they were seeing becoming twisted and hard to interpret. Two rival factions started fighting on the station, the Inverse Path and the Sons of the Chiliad Serpent. The former had lost all sense of purpose when it came to interpreting the visions of the rapture. They felt as if they had wasted their lives trying to solve and impossible question. The latter felt as if they did not find the answer to their visions soon, a terrible evil would overtake them. While both groups only made up a small portion of the overall cult, their numbers were still large enough to cause issues. During one of the rapturing ceremonies, a firefight broke out, with Kasmion Duum Kasmion Duum and Cato Fett Cato Fett caught in the middle of it. They were able to escape the confrontation and power down the station, pausing the ceremony. The leaders within the cult then banished both factions, determining that they were too dangerous to the cause.

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

SETTING INFORMATION
  • Space Station Name: Ring of the Rapture
  • Station Model: Custom model built by an ancient cult called the Followers of the Rapture
  • Classification: Cult Station
  • Location: Beneath Tash-Taral
  • Affiliation:
  • Population:
    • Heavy
  • Demographics:
    • The Ring was home to many different species that identified as Followers of the Rapture, most commonly Humans.
  • Accessibility:

    • The Ring of the Rapture is located in the far reaches of the East. Knowledge of the station has been sealed off for thousands of years, as hyperspace anomalies surrounding the base prevent any travel besides sublight, and even that can be dangerous. Anyone can freely land on the station, but the black hole and the rotation of the base can cause issues for explorers.
  • Traffic:

    • Current: Untraveled
      • No travelers venture out to the Ring anymore. It is considered taboo and bad luck for anyone that even flies near the megastructure.
    • Ancient: High
      • When the Followers of the Rapture were at their peak membership the station was heavily travelled. It acted as a religious headquarters so to speak. The station allowed for almost all of the followers to actively use it at once.
  • Description:

    • The Ring of the Rapture was once a massive religious station that surrounded an active black hole. Once enough energy had been gained, the station could entering into a "hyperspace circle." The station would spin in this circle, giving the followers the ability to watch out of the viewports, causing Hyper-rapture.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Central Hyperdrive Control

    • Four different points within the Ring are home to the control rooms that help navigate and maneuver the massive hyperdrive used by the station. These rooms are manned by about 20 people each, usually the followers who are on the Off-Rapture Period. In these control rooms the operators control the speed of the hyperdrives, making sure that all four are running equally at the same time. If any were to become off kiltered the station would fall into a violent spin, colliding with the black hole that helps stabilize the station itself.
  • Gathering Halls

    • When the time has come to engage in the act of viewing the Rapture, the followers will gather in these massive halls to stare out of the large windows. The followers all sit on the ground, either starting to meditate to clear their minds, or gathering all of their thoughts in hope to have the Rapture take them away. Once the station has engaged in its spin, the Rapture effect can be induced by starting out of the viewports, sending the followers into a hallucinatory state.
  • Black Hole Stabilization Center

    • The Black Hole is what allows this unique station to power and induce the effects of Rapture in a different way. Constant tug from the Black Hole makes it so the Ring will spin instead of actually taking off and traveling far away in Hyperspace. This power has to be stabilized to make sure the station doesn't start to be taken apart by the Black Hole either. In this center a large collection device gathers the energy from the Black Hole and transfers it into a small amount of power for the four Hyperdrives.

SECURITY: Low

Both in ancient and current times the station has relied on its obscureness and secrecy to keep it protected. The Followers of the Rapture were never a very social type, thus keeping the station pretty much unknown to anyone not a part of the religion.

The large ring's hyperdrive and the black hole have created a small "safe zone" that prevents any hyperspace travel. Ships trying to fly near the station will be pulled out of Hyperspace, as Nav computers have trouble charting a proper route near the ring.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
What started with a few simple hyperdrives evolved into a galaxy-wide religion that would seemingly vanish around twenty thousand years ago.

The Followers of the Rapture were a cult-like group of people who used the effect of Hyper-Rapture to try and become closer to the supposed "creators" of Hyperspace, the Purrgils. The followers would use every chance that they could to travel through Hyperspace. They believed the by staying in Hyperspace for extended periods of time they would see visions of the Purrgil home-system. Once found, they would use all of their resources to get there.

Once this place had been "found", the followers would chart their starships in that direction. Those who undertook the journey would never be heard from again. Either they found the system or simply perished somewhere in deep space while being affected by the Hyper-Rapture.

This large station, dubbed the "Ring of the Rapture", was a massive place of worship for the followers. Here thousands would gather for a collective religious awakening, hoping to receive the like others have.

Construction of the station was rather interesting, mainly due to the black hole that allowed the station to operate. Three large and powerful hyperdrives were placed attached in select spots on the ring. Once activated, the station would start to spin in a clockwise direction. The black hole would pull the station inward, thus preventing it from pulling itself apart.

In Hyperspace the followers could stare out of the massive viewports to start to induce Hyper-Rapture. This "mass rapturing" would usually last for hours upon end, or until the hyperdrives needed to power down.

The Ring now sits crumbling, still surprising the large black hole. It is believed that all of the followers received a vision of the home-system and left the station behind. Most knowledge about the followers has been lost to time. One of the only things to remain is the Ring, standing testament to time.

Hyper-Rapture - An examination
I will be using this thread to expand upon the idea of Hyper-Rapture and its effects on characters. There was not a Codex format that I felt fit with what I am wanting to write, so that is why I am doing it here.

Hyper-Rapture, as defined from Wookieepedia and Legends content, is a "supposed form of madness acquired from staring into hyperspace for a prolonged time." The only Canon definition that we have of Hyper-Rapture falls under Lightspeed Psychosis, which was described as a "mental condition related to hyperspace." There are four total texts that use Hyper-Rapture, with three being Legend and only one being Canon. So, there is not a lot of material to work with.

When I first explored the idea of Hyper-Rapture, it was when I was working on the Ring of the Rapture for a Codex competition. At the time I had maybe read the Wookieepedia article once or twice. I enjoyed Purrgils when watching Star Wars Rebels, so I knew that I wanted to include them in that submission. Mixing the two of them together, I wrote that when one was to stare into hyperspace for long enough, the effects of Hyper-Rapture would start to set in, and the victim would receive visions of the "Purrgil home-system." Granted I should have expanded on this A LOT more initially, but I left the submission how it was. Fast forward to over a year later and Ahsoka is released. Purrgils were one of the key focuses in the show in terms of how to get to Peridea. I knew from then that I wanted to expand on the idea of Hyper-Rapture more and what it could do.

And that leads me to here, with the start of my "Hyper-Rapture Project." A plan to help expand and redefine on a plethora of Star Wars items regarding hyperspace.

All of the stuff that I am talking about in here will be based upon eventual Codex approval, so I will come back and update this as time goes on.

The overarching theme of this expansion is that the Celestials are the original creators of hyperspace. That is going to be the basis of all of this lore that I am writing. Though I still have yet to play the SW KOTOR games, I'm using the works of Wookieepedia to help build on my ideas. From what I read, the Rakata, Gree, and Killik were all species that served the Celestials in one way or another. The Gree and Killik had developed forms of hyperspace travel on their own, while the Rakatans were granted the ability to travel the stars through the Kwa using Force-drives.

During this same time (again, all from what I've read on Wookieepedia) Abeloth is created from drinking out of the Pool of Knowledge. This left her corrupted and ultimately abandoned by the Celestials on Abeloth's planet. Now imprisoned there, she has no way to escape the world. But to ensure this, guards needed to be created to monitor the surrounding space. That is where the Purrgils come in. These space-faring creatures were born from the stars and granted force sensitivity by the Celestials. These magnificent creatures were able to travel through hyperspace, along with the ability to navigate the dangerous Maw where Abeloth's planet now resided. Celestials entrusting them with protecting the planet, both from Abeloth from escaping and from anyone trying to access the world.

Sometime near Abeloth's imprisonment, the Rakata decided to rebel against the Celestials, go on to conquer a major chunk of the galaxy. The Force-drives became corrupted with their dark side energy, fueling their conquest. Realizing the threat that the Rakatans now posed, the Celestials started to divert some of the Purrgils to track down Rakatan warships, destroying them and stopping their reign of terror. But since their numbers were spreading thin, Abeloth's world started to become less secure. She was able to send a message through the Force out to the galaxy, calling for anyone to come in rescue her. In reality, she wanted to possess and control whoever decided to visit her planet.

One of the groups to receive this message was the Rakatans. They had heard tales of Abeloth and how she rebelled against the Celestials. If they were able to control her and conquer her powers, their Force-drives would become unstoppable. This also meant that they had a chance of using her to fight the Celestials, taking them over as well. A large chunk of their forces was sent to try and find the planet. The Purrgils did all that they could to try and stop them, but ultimately the planet was discovered. A large battle broke out between Abeloth, the Rakatans, and the Purrgils, with Abeloth ultimately winning. All the Rakatans were defeated and imprisoned on the world, now servants to Abeloth. The surviving Purrgil retreated, returning to the Celestials to try and recover.

How does this all relate back to Hyper-Rapture? Well, part of the Celestials efforts in order to hide the planet was to create a large Maw surrounding Abeloth's planet. The only way to reach this world was through hyperspace, specifically by following the Purrgil's path into the plethora of black holes shrouding the system. Since the journey was dangerous, travelers had to enter hyperspace early and stay in it for the entire journey until they were right at the planet. Before large studies of hyperspace travel were completed, many spacers stared directly out of their viewports to ensure that their ship would not hit anything. Staring into the blue and white swirl for extended periods led initially to headaches and feeling and nausea. But those who were able to endure this were soon granted visions and hallucinations. Those who were able to view these visions (typically those strong in the Force) were shown the pathway to Abeloth's world.

Again, since I am saying that Celestials were the ones to create hyperspace travel, they would have done so on Abeloth's world (their original home planet.) Now that they have abandoned the world and moved to Mortis, the only inhabitant of their former home is Abeloth. But the Force power needed to create this way of travel still radiates from there. So, the visions which people saw showed them how to find where hyperspace originated from. But madness usually set in with those seeing the visions because many were not strong enough to comprehend what they were actually seeing.

The Followers of the Rapture are a group that I created who are obsessed with finding the secrets of Hyper-Rapture. Originally, I wrote them as wanting to find the "home system of the Purrgils." Now, I am shifting it to where they are trying to find this mysterious world (Abeloth's planet) and unlock the secrets of it. As far as the galaxy knows, Abeloth was killed around 40ABY. But for this lore, I am writing that she is still alive and building up her strength once more. Her call has been sent out to the stars in order to find Force-sensitive individuals to grow her power. The Followers of the Rapture do not know that she is still alive, or that the visions they are seeing lead to her world. The are simply obsessed with finding this location that plagues their hallucinations.

There is a whole lot of lore that I am wanting to create regarding Abeloth, Purrgils, Starweirds, hyperlanes, hyperspace, and a few more things that will all tie together. But for now, I wanted to just start with Hyper-Rapture and get my base thoughts down so I can build from there. I am really excited to share this with y'all, as it's something I have been wanting to write for a long time now.

If anyone has any thoughts/feedback/ideas about lore that I should incorporate, or things I should explore, please let me know. I want this project to include a bunch of Chaos lore and stories, making it something that the community can enjoy as a whole.
