Faction Hunting Party - Yharwod Society

Safiya was running late, as per usual, but this time she couldn't even blame training, she had over slept. "Damn! where is it?" she cursed to herself as she rummaged through her storage locker in the outpost dormitory. A dozen or so hunters had been staying there in shifts recently while hunting in the wilderness. There were two hunting teams formed up currently, one had just finished a 3 day trek, her party was due to leave "Feth! 40 minutes ago! They'll be half way to the lowlands by now?"

"Looking for this?" asked another disgruntled hunter from the bunk room as he tossed her her Enrico "Now get you ass put of her Saf and get caught up"

"Cheers Marc! Get some rest yeah!"

"Hmmm... night Saf"

She ran out the door and clipped her rifle and pack to her Orbak, placed her hat on her head and jumped on to the beast. "Yah!!" she gee'd up her Orbak and thundered out of the coral down the trail towards the hunting ground. A pack of Viators and some boar-wolves had been troubling the cattle recently and had already taken a few babies. She would need to push Clarrisa hard to get caught up but she had grabbed a couple of the juiciest apples that the orbaks weren't allowed from the breakfast table as a bribe. Before long she could see the others in the distance moving at a quick trot. She wrinkled her nose up at the ribbing she would get from the others for being late, particularly from her cousin Kalli Mylas Kalli Mylas , but it was her own fault this time so she would have to suck it up.

The lands out here were beautiful, rolling fields interspersed with copses and small woodlands. The sun was rising and quickly warming the air, the brim of her had was pulled low to keep the sun out of her eyes. She put her fingers in her mouth.

PHWEEEEEEEEEEEP

A peircing whistle came out to signal her approach to her collegues and to get them to wait, she was still a couple of hundred metres away but quickly crossed the gap.

'Horseback Ambience'

With the gentle morning sun glaring upon the small hunting party, Kalli squinted as the bright rays of sunshine kept catching the side of her eye under her hat. They were still in the height of summer, yet the stresses of the upcoming autumn harvest weighed heavily in her mind as she bobbed up and down on the back of her Orbak. Joined by two of her fellow Yharwodians, Jhon "Grim" Grimark Jhon "Grim" Grimark , the boss of the Yharwod Marshals, and Naran Ambras,

one of her finest livestock farmers and traders, they had left without their fourth member, the notoriously absent lightball captain and Kalli's cousin, Safiya Mylas Safiya Mylas .

It had been forty minutes and they had left without her~ they had made it relatively far through their mountain range, maintaining a comfortable trot to conserve the energy of their mounts. Leading the trio, she called behind her, "Anyone reckon' she'll show?" she grinned, no doubt in her mind that her younger cousin would be panicking after realising what time it was.

" 'both got your gear all sorted?" she questioned, double checking her
scattergun was firmly holstered within her saddle, as well as rations and her camping gear; they'd be staying overnight after all, though anything they hunted would not be wasted. A few more moments passed before the trio would hear a distant whistle from behind them, " 'bout time," she grinned, checking the time on her rusty chronometer as she squinted to see Safiya charging towards them.

Bringing up the rear of the trio, Yharwod's Director of Security rode on in silence. The large, muscular former soldier rarely smiled, his face set impassively in a grim, emotionless mask. His stoic demeanor had earned him his nickname: "Grim", and he lived up to the moniker. For their hunting party, he'd dressed in his customary black leather coat and rugged denim jeans, which were likewise covered by a set of worn dark leather chaps. Nestled in the stirrups of his own mount, a dark grey & mottled brown female Orbak he'd come to call "Calamity", a pair of sturdy riding boots rose to mid-shin to protect his ankles & feet from the rigors of the trail.

Sheathed on his right hip, a wicked, broad, long-bladed hunting knife hung from his belt. Accompanying it, lashed to his thigh in an old faded rig, was a large-bore revolver - the Society's standard-issue sidearms, and capable of delivering a 10mm slug at high speed with a booming report which could be heard from a kilometer away. Lashed to the cowboy's back was a peculiar long-blaster; longer, heavier, and bulkier than the Enrico many of the Yharwod Society carried, the weapon would be recognizable by those with a knowledge of blasters to be a Valken M-39 Blaster Rifle - the Paratrooper Model, designed to deliver a powerful blast accurately at long range, and famous for its performance on battlefields across the Galaxy.

Sergeant Grim had proven his prowess on more than one occasion with the rare weapon, and he tended to prefer it over other designs, especially on long treks such as this.
"Anyone reckon' she'll show?"

Kalli's voice, carried by the gentle mountain breeze, reached his ears. A smirk tugged imperceptibly at the corner of his lip, and he spit a stream of tabaac juice into the dirt. "And miss a chance to get away from all the excitement on the farm? Hell naw."

A few moments later, a shrill whistle sounded behind them and the retired Pathfinder shifted slightly in the saddle to glance behind them.

In the distance, bearing down on them at speed, another Orbak was galloping with haste... and astride the beast was surely Kalli's cousin.

'bout time,"

"Yep." He muttered under his breath, turning to face ahead.

When Safiya Mylas Safiya Mylas reached them, she'd find Sergeant Grim looking in her direction impassively, his expression entirely unreadable. Whether he was disappointed in her or surprised, she'd be unable to tell.

"Get enough sleep?" He asked. "Didn't wanna wake you. You looked like you were having a nice dream. Sucking your thumb & everything."

"To be honest, I get it." Kel murmured, looking down from the rocky hill. He was far from the group, but that was just the way he was. He preferred doing his hunting alone, as he did most things. He still didn't sleep in the barracks, instead making camp out in some patch of wilderness. He knew it made some of the farmers mad. But to be fair, he had saved a lot of cattle by sleeping in the pastures. Besides, the animals seemed to like him more anyway.

He waved at Jhon "Grim" Grimark Jhon "Grim" Grimark , the Kaleesh knew him enough to know he definitely saw it. He turned his eyes from the group to the dead Viator on the ground, the hole still smoking in its side. "I get why you hunt. You're hungry." He said, propping himself up with Ingmal.

"I was once hungry." Kel continued, "Still am, sometimes. But hunger comes and goes." He looked off, distantly gazing.

He leaned over the beast, examining it even closer. "Maybe I find one of your young, eh? Make sure they aren't so hungry anymore." He nodded to himself, he liked that idea.

He patted the dead thing on Its side. "Good hunter, you are."

He raised himself from his kneeling position, being a lot more visible to the group, with one motion, Ingmal was on his back. He made his way down the rocks, preparing to meet the others.

Safiya caught up with the other hunters to be confronted with a light jab from Jhon "Grim" Grimark Jhon "Grim" Grimark and she smiled "I always sleep better once the snorers head out of the dorm." she looked at Kalli Mylas Kalli Mylas with a slight image of shame on her face "Sorry coz, totally meant to be on time this morning."

As the group continued she adjusted her hat and reached down to feed her Orbak one of the liberated apples, that she happily devoured from the woman's hand. "Good girl, i'll carry you on the way back" she joked as she stroked the mane of the noble creature.

Looking ahead she saw Kel Qyr Savuk making his way down a small incline towards them, she knew this guy less well than the others, but everyone knew everyone in the commune, so loner or not, it was hard to avoid making at least some connections. "What did you hit Kel? she shouted out to the hunter, they were still far from the main lands their prey inhabited but it wasn't too unusual to have them out this far marking boundaries.

It had taken Safiya a couple of hours of hard riding to catch up with the head start the rest of the group had on her, so at the first opportunity, she suggested they briefly stop at a brook and allow their mounts to drink. She would also take the opportunity to have a glance at the map and make a proper plan for where they might head and intention for camping the night. She might be known for being late sometimes, but she did take her jobs seriously and animal management was a bit of a favourite for this farmhand.

'Horseback Ambience'

"Hah!" she chucked at Jhon's comment as her cousin had caught up to the riding group, though her amusement would soon be cut short by the sound of blaster fire up ahead. To her relief it was only Kel Qyr Savuk, one of
u0ZzmYr.png
their latest hires, an odd one but one that was promptly welcomed regardless~ it was their job to take care of anyone who needed it and the Kaleesh seemed to fit in ok.

Smiling to herself once he showed himself up the hill, she couldn't help but wave at him before turning back to Safiya, "
sure, sure.. you're never late to lightball practice though, eh?" Kalli grinned to herself, also taking a 'dig' at her cousin. "Maybe you could start camping out with our friend up there? That'll get you moving nice and early!"

Safiya's request was taken into consideration, perhaps a short stop would be good~ if not to at least let her cousins tired orbak rest for a few moments. "
Mm, good idea; let's stop at the base of that waterfall, we'll recollect and orient ourselves before the big push past the mountains," she paused for a moment as if to wave for Kel Qyr Savuk to come and join them, "sound good?"

"I always sleep better once the snorers head out of the dorm."

The quick come-back from the young woman gave Jhon reason to smile, and he did - barely - but said nothing in return. It was a common joke within the Community that Jhon was only quiet when he was awake, but he'd privately confirmed it with a few of the folks he trusted most that he did not, in fact, snore loud enough to wake the dead.

They plodded on, continuing down the trail with Jhon holding position at the rear of the line. The warrior's mount, a dark-gray Orbak with a chipped right tusk & black fur at its ankles, tossed its head to avoid a swarm of gnats dancing in a pool of sunlight. The party's Marksman kept a weathered eye on the trail ahead, on the rocky incline beside them, and on the forested hill opposite - quietly plodding along in his own thoughts.

Kel Qyr Savuk waved in his direction from atop a rise nearby, and Jhon noticed it immediately - lifting one hand in a slight wave of recognition. He knew, immediately, that the Kaleesh had the eyes of a hawk and would see the replied greeting. Safiya's voice rose in a shout as she called out to the lone hunter running on their perimeter. Jhon had recognized, a short while before, the sound of a blaster shot as it echoed through the trees... but he'd been unconcerned. He made it a point to learn the reports of the weapons his men carried.

"Mm, good idea; let's stop at the base of that waterfall, we'll recollect and orient ourselves before the big push past the mountains," she paused for a moment as if to wave for Kel Qyr Savuk to come and join them, "sound good?"

"Aye." Jhon replied, taking the reins of his mount in both hands. He was thirsty anyway, and if he was, he knew "Ol' Bill" would be too.

"We can get some fresh water for the Orbaks, maybe eat a protein bar. Stretch our legs a minute."

He would follow Kalli Mylas Kalli Mylas ' lead to the very edge of the clear, ice-cold watering hole, where he would dismount & stretch. The feeling of the warm sun & gentle spray of the roaring waterfall nearby dappled his skin, and the clear, pure air of Epica's wilderness filled his lungs as the big man took a deep breath... then let it out.
