How to make a good Public Thread?

I've looked through the Open Roleplaying section a lot lately, and it seems dominated by faction politics and wars, to the point where even supposedly "public" threads seem to be a faction meeting put, but also allows for some other group of people to pounce in and ruin there day.

I've posted a few public threads before, and some of them were absolutely brilliant (case in point, my first thread with Zambrano the Hutt went to fifty posts, had nothing to do with factions, basically catapulted the character onto the scene, and was overall extremely fun and unexpected)

So, what goes into a public thread that can make it fun and entertaining? Cuz I could really use some easy-to-enter open-ended fun.

Disney's Princess
  • Location - Neutral or Faction Influenced
  • Title - Click Bait or Activity Specific
  • Posts Thus Far - The most posts in a Public Thread, the larger the barrier to entry
  • Page 1 - The deeper it's buried, the harder it is to join
  • Less is More - Too many heavy paragraphs in the first post, the less likely shy newcomers will just drop in
  • Sex Appeal - Three Gamoreans is a fight. Three Zeltrons is a flirt. Three Corellians is a drinking contest. etc...
  • Your Sig and Bio - Random is good. But some people research your character and plot for chemistry before jumping in.

I could go on. But that way too many already. Lulz. Anyway. 2 cents. Just rambling. :D

It's like there are no other meeting places in the galaxy. Don't get me wrong, I like a drink as much as the next guy, and considerably more than most at this moment, but there are limits. Why not an art gallery, or an opium den? Maybe a petrol station.

Or, I dunno, maybe one of the millions of planets outside of civilization or on the fringes of in the galaxy?

Hell, there's literally infinite space with nothing there, where no one can find you. And the best part is, no tetanus Or hepatitis. Unless you run a nasty ship, that is.

Those require the most "thought" because who wants to just appear on a planet that has nothing to do with their IC and OOC goals and on top of that in the middle of nowhere and meet people they have no reason to meet? Nobody except probably explorers...Which are few and far between on this board of UberJedi and UberSith

[member="Rusty"], [member="Braith Achlys"] Well it's clear a bar is undesirable, but what about a Bazaar situation? Going shopping and you run into people?

Can you give me an example of some casual place that's easy to jump into?

Bazaars work. So do malls, restaurants, arms expos, etc. Any sufficiently public place where people might run into each other can be fun, if it's done right. But bars and cantinas have that iconic Star Wars feel. It's easy shorthand for "I'm a lovable scoundrel."

How about a casino? A library/media café? A park or water feature or town square? Where would your character hang out or even just be passing by? Own and operate a ship? You probably have to go to a mechanic's shop at some point or another. If the universe is infinite, the number of options for your character to visit is also infinite.

Which really just comes down to creativity and ingenuity. The two things that might be most important when trying to pull unrelated parties into your public thread.

Totes cool. It's just that 99% of chaos public threads have taken place in a bar of some form or another. It's my only gripe.

Wait for somebody else to create the public thread and crash that bad boy.

On a more serious note while not public threads I have started trying to branch out to more than just the typical "bar thread".

Back alley of random planet, Gladiatorial Arena as a spectator not fighter, nature preserve.
