The site is set at 900ABY, so quite far into the future if you compare it to other Star Wars Media. As for the plot, it changes quite a bit. There's no overarching site plot, but it's what the writers here create themselves. So it can be factions starting conflicts with each other, times of peace, or whatever folks decide to write together.

Currently there isn't really a major conflict, the Galactic Alliance just finished the Second Great Hyperspace War against a faction called the Brotherhood of the Maw and are resting on their laurels as cleanup operations begin.
Remnants from both the Maw and the Imperial faction are stirring on the fringes in the north while the Rimward Trade League establishes itself along the edge of the Core.
The Sith Order of the Outer Rim have thus far managed to escape too much attention due to the ongoing wars but soon enough the RTL will be in a position to move against them and the wider GA will take notice as well, so there is indeed conflict to come.
There are also minor factions here and there with their own stories as well, yet to make their presence on the galactic stage.

For the flairs, those are pretty easy to find! Just click at your name at the top of the forum and a little drop down list should pop up. Then click flair chooser and pick whichever ones apply to your character or look nice! You can choose a maximum of three at at time.
As for your character, it really depends on what you intend for him to do. Factions, especially major ones, are not mandatory so you could wander around as you see fit really. The GA and RTL both have Jedi Orders but there are a few other Jedi sects littered around that are largely unaffiliated or neutral to any one faction aside from Sith lol.
