Both legends and canon work in a vague wash together here. Many of the events happened 800+ years ago in our timeline, and before a period known as The Four Hundred Year Darkness. Much of what you see in the movies, comics and novels is shrouded in mystery, myth and legend brought on by the centuries.
It works well to bring the best of both.
