Lyra Ventor
Character
The quieter praise registered without pulling Lyra completely away this time. She kept her eyes closed and concentrated on her breathing, gradually becoming aware that Syn had matched his rhythm to hers. For a few breaths it helped. There weren't two separate patterns anymore, only one steady inhale and exhale to follow, and Lyra managed to hold onto that simplicity longer than she had before.
Then Syn moved his hand, and almost immediately she lost it.
Her brow furrowed as she reached outward again, searching for the presence she'd only just learned to distinguish. Something brushed against her awareness, enough that she thought she'd found him, but the instant she concentrated harder on it, the sensation seemed to slip away. Frustration followed, then the thought that she was frustrated, then the realization that thinking about being frustrated was exactly the sort of distraction she was supposed to avoid. Within seconds, her carefully quieted mind was busy again.
Lyra drew another breath and returned to the rhythm Syn had established. She found him again eventually, or at least thought she did, only to lose the impression before she could determine where his hand had gone. Her fingers twitched at her side with the temptation to reach out physically, but she resisted. Another breath. Another attempt. This time she held the faint vibration for a few seconds longer before it vanished again. Lyra stayed silent, stubbornly starting over instead of opening her eyes or asking Syn to make it easier.
