Private Held in the Currents of the Force

Lyra followed his gaze out over the drop, her eyes tracing the same path down through the mist and layered canopy, though where he seemed to read something deeper within it, she saw distance. Height. Impact.

Her arms folded loosely as she leaned just slightly forward, testing the edge more with instinct than intent before easing back again.

"I might be a pilot," she said, her tone dry but not dismissive, "but I don't like doing jumps without a parachute."

There was a brief pause as she glanced down again, longer this time, measuring it in a way that had nothing to do with the Force and everything to do with angles, descent, and survivability.

Her gaze shifted back to him, then to the arm he offered, and something in her expression softened just a fraction. Not hesitation exactly, but a quiet acknowledgment of trust that had not been there before.

"That said…" she added, exhaling lightly as she stepped closer to the edge, "I've made worse decisions mid-flight."

Her hand came up, resting against his arm, not gripping tightly, just enough to steady herself against the unfamiliarity of it all.

"You're sure about the landing?" she asked, glancing down one last time before looking back at him.

He looked at her and gave a small nod of his head as he move din close and he lifted her effortlessly. Holding her close with a nod of his head before he moved. THe tension and coiling of his muscles before he lept into the air and wrapped himself in the force. There was a small look as he was slowing his descent towards the lower jungle. ONe hand coming out as he directed himself with the force sending him to the side but he was guiding himself down into the trees. Moving forward with a run along the top as the canopy was thicker, holding his weight with her but he was holding her closer to him so that they would be able to move... the jedi master was checking on the smaller mountains and cliffs within. FInding where it reached up when he jumped to staand on a vine but he looked at Lyra. "Mid-flight it is easier to adjust but we won't go to the floor until we know there isn't things going to drop on our heads."

The sudden lift stole whatever words Lyra might have had, whisking them away into the humid mountain air.

For a brief, disorienting instant, her entire reality shifted from the safety of solid ground to a chaotic blur of motion, height, and proximity. Her hands came up instinctively, not out of a pilot's fear of the fall, but as a desperate reflex to find an anchor. She found it against him, her palms pressing into the steady strength of his bare chest as the Force-fueled jump launched them into the open void.

Her breath caught sharply in her throat.

It wasn't the terrifying drop that did it. It was the heat.

The rush of the wind, the dizzying green smear of the canopy, and the controlled arc of their descent all blurred into secondary static compared to the overwhelming awareness of where she was and who she was pressed against. Every micro-adjustment Syn made to their trajectory translated directly through her skin. Every shift in his balance was a grounding vibration that felt entirely, dangerously different from the mechanical feedback of a yoke or a throttle.

In a cockpit, flying had always been about distance. It was about the vastness between her and the stars.

This was the opposite. This was a crushing, breathless lack of distance.

"I—" she started, the syllable dying as they hit the upper branches.

He landed with the impossible lightness of a predator, settling onto the swaying canopy, but Lyra's grip only tightened. Her fingers curled slightly against him, a subconscious refusal to let go of the only thing keeping her world from spinning off its axis.

Her eyes flicked everywhere but at him. She tracked the serrated edges of leaves, the rough texture of bark, the way the mist swirled around their boots, anything to provide a focal point that wasn't the warmth of his hold or the steady thrum of his heartbeat so close to her own. When she finally did look up, it was a fractured, accidental collision of gazes before she wrenched her eyes away again, her cheeks flushing a deep, traitorous crimson.

"Right…mid-flight…adjustments," she managed, her voice hitching in a way that betrayed her completely. "Yes. That…that makes sense. Theoretically."

Inside, her thoughts were a panicked scramble of flight data and sheer disbelief.

Maker, she thought, the word a silent plea.

Of all the variables she had accounted for when she agreed to this, of all the ways a mission into a forgotten jungle could have unfolded, this specific geometry was not in the charts. Not the altitude. Not the humidity. And certainly not the terrifyingly comfortable way his arm felt anchored around her.

Why is this happening? Why now?

Her fingers shifted against his chest, a restless, fluttering movement as she became acutely aware of the contact, yet she didn't pull away. She couldn't. Not while they were perched on a living tightrope of vines and branches that demanded a level of focus she was currently losing to a sea of flustered static.

"You could have warned me," she breathed after a long second. There was no real bite to the accusation, only the shaky, desperate attempt of a girl trying to reclaim a sense of control that had vanished the moment her boots left the dirt.

She dropped her gaze to his shoulder, her pulse hammering in her neck, loud enough that she was certain he could feel it.

"I would have…prepared," she added, though as she felt the steady rise and fall of his chest beneath her hands, she realized there wasn't a simulator in the galaxy that could have prepared her for this.

He looked at her while he stood there but held her close enough. Feeling her hand and he could hear the pulse in her neck as he spoke. "Would you have been able to?" He was curious about it. He had rarely met ones who knew how to prepare to jump off a clip even if they were expecting it. There was a look though at her when he turned his head to look upon her. "We still have to get there, I can move us along the branches unless you want to get down?" He said it while looking but he knew he could support his and her weight easily enough. He was looking torwards where they needed to go but was looking at a circular movement that they would be able to use to scout around it.

Lyra did not answer him immediately.

His question lingered somewhere between them, and for a moment she simply stood there, still very aware of how little distance existed between them, of the steady rhythm beneath her hand, of the fact that her thoughts had not quite returned to where they should have been.

Would she have been able to?

Her eyes flicked up to him, then away again just as quickly, her breath catching once more before she forced it into something steadier.

"No," she admitted quietly, the honesty slipping out before she could dress it up into something more composed. "Probably not."

There was a faint exhale after that, almost like she was conceding something to herself as much as to him.

Her gaze shifted downward toward the jungle floor far below, its layered depth reminding her just how far removed they were from anything solid. The idea of getting down from here without him was…not appealing.

"And I think I'd prefer not to test that theory right now," she added, a small thread of dry humor returning as she glanced back up, though it was softer than usual.

Her fingers adjusted slightly where they rested against him, less uncertain now, more deliberate as she found her balance again along the shifting canopy.

"Branches are fine," she continued, her voice steadier this time, even if her pulse had not entirely agreed. "It's closer to flying anyway. Just… slower, and with more consequences."

Her eyes followed the direction he had been looking, tracing the circular path through the trees, trying to map it in her mind the same way she would a flight line.

"You lead," she said after a moment, quieter now, but without hesitation. "I'll adjust."

The words came more easily that time. Familiar. Even if everything else about the situation was not.

He gave her a nod while moving and stepping on the branches he would be able to balance easily enough. His senses flaring out for the moment as he moved tracking more of the force itself. THe branches thick but he was making his steps distinctive so that Lyra would be able to follow him and where he was going. He started moving fast going from thick branch to thicker branch and weaving into the canopy so that he could get a visual in the force of the jungle floor around them. Mist clinging to his skin when he got closer. The scent of the water was sharper. "The jungle is thicker the closer we are able to get. The canopies branches are at least wide enough to move but it also means other things can use them."

Lyra followed a half step behind him, her focus split in a way she was not accustomed to, part of it locked onto where his feet landed, memorizing each placement so she could mirror it, and the rest…struggling to stay where it needed to be.

The branches were wide enough, stable enough, but they were alive in a way metal never was. They shifted under her weight, subtle but constant, forcing her to adjust with every step as she kept her eyes fixed on him rather than the drop below.

It was easier that way. Mostly.

"Right thicker jungle…more things that can use it," she repeated, her voice quieter than usual as she tried to anchor herself in the logic of it instead of everything else pressing at the edges of her awareness.

Her foot caught slightly on a raised knot in the bark, not enough to stumble, but enough to break her rhythm for a fraction of a second before she corrected, her hand brushing the trunk beside her to steady herself.

"That's…good to know," she added, though there was a faint breath behind the words that suggested she wasn't entirely convinced it was good at all.

Her gaze lifted again, tracking him as he moved faster, more certain, the distance between them stretching and closing in uneven intervals as she worked to keep pace. The mist clung to her skin now, too, dampening stray strands of hair and cooling the heat that had not entirely faded from before.

Maker…

Her thoughts slipped again, unbidden.

Of all the assignments she could have found herself in, of all the places she could have ended up, she was here, balancing on branches in a jungle that felt far too quiet, following someone who moved through it as if he belonged there.

What have you gotten me into?

Her fingers flexed slightly at her sides before she forced them to still, her focus narrowing again as she matched his next step.

"If something is using the canopy," she said after a moment, her tone steadier now, pulling herself back into something more analytical, "I'd prefer we see it before it sees us."

A brief pause, then a quieter addition, almost to herself. "Though I'm starting to think that's not how this place works."

He moved but he could feel her in the force and see her in his senses as she was falling back a little at times. Adjusting his pacing but not making it as obvious while he moved with intention towards it as coming near the source of the mists he was looking. The air in the secluded grotto was thick with a cool, persistent mist that clings to the skin like a damp veil. There is no sharp heat here, only the muted, silvered light of a sun filtered through a dense canopy of emerald leaves. The waterfalls descend in broad, rhythmic sheets, their movement so fluid they appear more like falling lace than rushing water. Each cascade spilling over ancient, moss-slicked stone ledges that have been smoothed into soft, rounded edges by the tireless passage of time.

The palette a soothing gradient of teals, aquamarines, and deep forest greens, creating a visual sanctuary that lacks any jarring or neon hues. It was a place designed for the eyes to rest, where the boundary between the stone and the water is blurred by the rising haze. Below the primary falls, the water gathered into a crystalline basin that remained remarkably still, despite the constant influx from above. The surface of the pool acting as a pale turquoise mirror, reflecting the towering rock faces and the sun-drenched foliage of the upper cliffs with a soft, dreamlike diffusion. There was no crashing waves or violent sprays; instead, the water transitioned from the vertical drop into the horizontal pool with a gentle, bubbling grace.

Large, pale gray boulders sitting anchored in the shallows, their surfaces dry and matte against the shimmering liquid surrounding them. The environment feeling heavy and grounded, insulated from the outside world by the sheer walls of the canyon. The surrounding vegetation growing in lush, quiet abundance, softening the jagged lines of the geological formations. Trees with slender branches leaning over the precipice, their leaves glowing with a translucent, lime-colored light that suggests a permanent state of spring. There was a profound sense of stillness that underlies the movement of the falls, a quietude that seems to absorb all sound into the soft roar of the white noise created by the water.

No harsh shadows or high-contrast glares disrupt the scene; the lighting is an even, ethereal glow that emanates from the mist itself. The jedi master was moving as he looked with a moment for himself. He was guiding the way for her to be able to move and find a place. "That would be the preferable way. The other is not splitting up, most smart predators are ambush predators that come when their prey are divided unless they have overwhelming numbers." He said it but was looking around, at least the two of them had something good going for them. They knew not to do certain things as opposed to creatures that usually worked on instinct.

Lyra slowed as the space opened around them, her steps easing not because the footing became easier, but because something about the place demanded it.

Her gaze lifted, drawn outward despite herself. For a moment, she forgot to move.

The constant tension she had been holding since they entered the jungle loosened just slightly as she took in the basin below, the way the water moved without violence, the way the light softened everything it touched. It felt…contained. Not safe, not exactly, but quieter than anything they had passed through to reach it.

Different.

Her breath came out slower as she stepped onto a broader stretch of branch, her balance settling more naturally now as she adjusted to the living surface beneath her boots.

"It doesn't feel like a place anything should be hunting in," she said quietly, her voice almost lost beneath the softened rush of the falls. "Which probably means something is."

Her eyes traced the water's stillness, lingering on the surface that reflected everything too perfectly, too cleanly, before shifting back toward the surrounding stone and foliage. She was not looking for life the way he did. She was looking for disruption. Patterns that did not quite fit.

"Ambush makes more sense here," she continued, more thoughtfully now. "Too many blind angles. Too much cover. If something wanted to wait, it could."

She stepped a little closer along the branch, careful but more controlled now, her earlier distraction fading into something quieter and more focused, though not entirely gone.

Her gaze flicked toward him briefly, then back to the basin.

"So we stay together," she said, more to confirm than question, her tone steady again. "And we don't give anything a reason to think we're easy."

A small pause followed, her expression softening just slightly as she looked out over the water again.

"It's…almost peaceful," she admitted, quieter now. "Which I'm guessing is exactly why it shouldn't be trusted."

He gave a nod of his head. "It would be, the stillness here would be ideal for a predator or something kept this far out. If the place in the center was built at the same time then it is one scenario, if it was made before or after then that means this place has been found more then once and held people." He was saying it as he thought about more of it but stood there with her. "But we will endure, I said I would show you wonders and this wasn't the initial idea. I had planned just for starbursts or a nova from a distance. Something you maybe have not seen in the galaxy." Not this he thought but he stood there and moved one hand to his belt as he slid a lightsaber off of his hip from the groove of the armored plate. He held it with a look. "IN case, it has been modified to for cutting beskar and vong armor."

Lyra's attention shifted from the water back to him as he spoke, the quiet of the place settling differently now that he had given it context. What had felt serene a moment ago now carried weight, history layered into it in ways she could not see but could almost sense. Her eyes flicked briefly toward the distant citadel before returning to the basin below, trying to reconcile the beauty of the landscape with the unsettling possibilities he had raised.

"So either it belongs here," she said slowly, thinking it through aloud as if voicing the thought might make it more logical, "or something came here and decided it was worth staying."

Neither option felt particularly comforting given the valley's isolation. Her gaze dropped to the lightsaber as he drew it, the motion catching her attention fully and holding it for a second longer than she meant to. She studied the weapon not with fear, but with a quiet, analytical curiosity, noting how the way he held it with such practiced ease contrasted sharply with the dangerous implications of what he had just said.

"That's reassuring," she added, though there was a faint dryness to the words that betrayed her skepticism. "In a very specific kind of way."

Her fingers brushed lightly against her own side in an unconscious check for something that wasn't there, a phantom search for a cockpit or controls, as if she were looking for any familiar anchor to ground her in this alien environment. At his earlier comment, however, something in her expression softened just slightly, the tension in her brow easing as she considered his perspective.

"A nova might have been a little easier to process," she admitted, glancing back out over the water with a voice that had grown quieter and more introspective. "Less immediate than whatever is happening down there."

A small pause followed, then a faint breath of something almost like amusement touched her lips, a brief flicker of her usual spirit returning.

"But I don't think I've ever seen anything like this either," she said, more honestly this time, "so I suppose it still counts as a discovery."

Her gaze lifted again, scanning the edges of the basin, the gnarled branches, and the ancient stone as her focus returned to something more grounded and tactical.

"If something is here," she continued, her tone steadying as she processed the reality of their situation, "it is either very patient or very confident."

She shifted her footing slightly, settling into a more ready stance without fully tensing, her pilot's instincts beginning to take over where her wonder had left off.

"Either way," she added, glancing toward him and the weapon he now held ready, "I'm starting to understand why you're keeping that close at hand. It seems this place demands a bit more than just observation."

He gave her a nod to what she was saying. The saber there as he brought it and place it in her hands. "Yes but it is in case we get separated. It will be brighter in the force and I can track it as well as you." He said it when he was looking as her now but also senses the area around them. "There is always a chance something will happen and I want you to be safe. So even if you don't actually draw it, keep it with you for now. It will be more motivation for not going solo to go after whatever is here." he said it but he looked at the water while he walked with a nod of his head. "But take a moment first, we'll wait a few moments and recoup ourselves before finishing the way there."

Lyra stilled slightly when he placed the saber in her hands, the unexpected weight of it drawing her full attention. Her fingers adjusted around the hilt, careful, deliberate, as if she wasn't entirely sure how firmly she was supposed to hold something like this.

Her gaze lingered on it for a brief moment before lifting back to him.

"Alright," she said quietly, a small nod following as she accepted it without argument.

The reasoning made sense. She didn't need to understand the Force to grasp its intent.

Her grip settled, more certain now, though she made no move to activate it.

"I won't go wandering off," she added, a faint trace of dry reassurance in her tone.

After a second, her eyes drifted back toward the water, the stillness of it pulling her attention again as she let out a slow breath.

"A moment sounds good," she murmured.

He gave a nod of his head to that with her. THe moment was going to be something that could center them and he moved while scenting the water with a look. His hands going to a rock as he sat on it and crossed his legs to allow himself to focus and center his mind and vision. THe force was expanding in his vision as he breathed in and then outwards. Motioning for her to sit across from him and it gave him the best view of the jungle in case something was coming towards them and keeping the water and mountain at their back. He could feel the water easier in most cases before he spoke. "A moment, then, sit and find your center. The force here is wild and even untrained you are going to want your mental shields to be strong."

Lyra shifted slightly as she settled across from him, the lightsaber resting across her palms as she adjusted her posture to find a center of gravity that felt right. For a long moment, she simply listened to the environment around them, letting the sound of the water, the dampness of the mist, and the quiet that wasn't quite quiet wash over her.

Then she let her eyes lower, not fully closed, but just enough to dim the distractions of the physical world. She drew in a slow, steady breath, and instead of reaching outward for the Force as she had been taught, she reached inward toward the things she truly understood.

The Starling's hull came to her first. She visualized the clean, familiar lines of the ship and the pattern of weld seams she could trace without looking, her hands knowing every inch of the metal by memory alone. The sound followed soon after, that low, steady hum of the engines that remained constant and reliable, never shifting unless she gave the command. There were no questions there and no pressure, just something that was entirely hers.

She held onto that feeling as she sat. The jungle didn't disappear, and the sound of the falls remained along with the damp air pressing against her skin, but the world began to dull at the edges. It lost its weight as she focused on the environment instead of trying to push it away.

Everything became structured, familiar, and controlled. Her breathing evened out, and her shoulders settled, the lingering tension in her frame finally easing into something quieter and more deliberate.

"I've got it," she said softly after a moment, not opening her eyes, her voice sounding steadier than it had all day.

He sat there and breathed in as she did, holding it for a moment.. then let his senses expand. He was closer to the jungle now and the focus was easier before he was checking on parts of it. His senses expanding under the canopy better as he could sense what was there.. Lyra's mental shields were rising which was good and he could feel more of the planet now that he was away from the temple above. The Force moved with his awareness following the river's path as it descended beyond the falls. Dropping and weaving through the jungle itself while he tracked it with his senses. Breathing steadied but expanding to wrap the pair of them in a bubble.

A sunken courtyard emerged in the force, bathed in golden light that filtered through the ancient canopy. Towering stone arches, draped in thick, living vines, formed a majestic circle around a vast, tranquil pool of crystalline turquoise water. The pool glowed from within with a soft, inner radiance, its surface rippling faintly as multiple gentle waterfalls cascaded into it from surrounding moss-covered ledges and staircases. Broad stone stairs, worn smooth by time and softened with emerald growth, descended gracefully on multiple sides into the glowing waters. Smaller streams trickled down the steps themselves, merging seamlessly into the central basin.

A low stone bridge arched over one section of the pool, with delicate falls spilling beneath it into the luminous depths. Delicate clusters of purple and pink blossoms dotted the edges and vine-covered pillars, their forms faintly pulsing with the same serene Force presence that suffused the entire place. The ruins carried an aura of forgotten sanctity grand arches standing as silent guardians, reclaimed yet preserved by the surrounding jungle in perfect, harmonious balance. Everything in the vision shimmered with quiet power: the clear waters revealing faint submerged stones beneath, the dappled light beams carrying a sense of profound peace and invitation. The vision lingered and he could feel the bond with Lyra, clear and there if she was able to pick up the impressions.

Lyra didn't notice the shift at first, her focus remaining anchored exactly where she had placed it with the Starling's steady hull feeling like a physical weight beneath her thoughts. The familiar hum of its engines formed a quiet, reliable barrier between her mind and the weight of everything else pressing in from the outside world, keeping the encroaching jungle at the edges of her perception while the roar of the falls softened into something distant and manageable.

Then something changed in the space between heartbeats.

It wasn't a sound that she could hear with her ears, nor was it a feeling she could easily put a name to. It felt more like something slipping past the edges of the mental walls she had built, neither breaking through nor forcing its way in, but merely touching against her consciousness with a presence that didn't belong to the jungle or to her.

Her brow furrowed as the hum of the Starling seemed to flicker for a moment, not disappearing entirely but suddenly being forced to share space with a new, radiant warmth. Her breath hitched just slightly as an image began to form, appearing not in front of her eyes but somewhere deep behind them, filled with shapes and colors that didn't match the mist and stone where she had been sitting just moments before.

She didn't reach for the vision because she didn't know how to grasp something so ethereal, yet it remained there, shimmering with a quiet, persistent light. Her fingers tightened instinctively around the lightsaber in her lap as her breathing shifted, losing its perfect rhythm, though she managed to keep the panic at bay. The walls she had built held their ground, yet something was pressing gently against them now, asking for entry rather than demanding it.

"I…" she started, her voice trailing off into a whisper that sounded more uncertain than she ever willingly allowed herself to be.

She tried to anchor herself again, pulling the familiar structure of her ship back into place and steadying her pulse before letting her thoughts brush closer to the sensation. There was the impression of stone and water, paired with a brilliant light that didn't belong to the filtered green canopy hanging above them. Her head tilted just slightly, as if she were physically trying to align her senses with something she couldn't quite see with her eyes.

"There is something out there," she said slowly, choosing her words with deliberate care as she tried to make sense of the feeling without losing her footing entirely. "It is not right here, but somewhere below us, or perhaps further into the heart of the ruins."

Her eyes opened halfway, remaining unfocused for a second before they finally settled, though she pointedly avoided looking directly at Syn.

"It feels strangely structured," she hesitated, searching for terms that made sense to a mind built for mechanics and flight paths. "It feels almost like it was designed with the intention of being found."

Her grip eased as she finally found her center again, letting the Starling's hum return to the forefront of her mind, yet the impression of that ancient place lingered like a ghost in her thoughts.

"Is that you doing that?" she asked quietly, her tone lacking any accusation as she simply tried to understand where the boundary lay between his influence and whatever was waiting for them in the dark.

He could feel it, he couldn't see it... guided in the force with his vision as she spoke and. "No, not entirely. I was reaching out to sense and try to find anything in the force here that stood out but it is like I said before. Everything resonate except there." He wasn't sure but he could see it more like a softer glow with the world making it visible as opposed to it being overwhelming. "I wasn't expecting it to be able to reach you." He said it but remained there as she was focusing more in a moment. He allowed the force to push back here as his bubble was going against it. To reinforce their own vision instead with stronger mental shields. "This place is... different in other ways. Even relaxing to meditate it can push at the mind to try and lower resistance."

Lyra drew in a slow breath as he spoke, the edges of that presence easing slightly as she retreated into the familiar, mental architecture of the Starling. She focused on the steady hum of the engines, the clean lines of the cockpit, and the absolute sense of control she felt behind the yolk. It steadied her, allowing her posture to settle and the pressure against her thoughts to lessen, though the sensation remained a persistent weight at the back of her mind.

"Yeah," she murmured, her voice sounding more grounded as she adjusted her grip on the hilt in her lap. "I felt that."

Her brow knit in concentration rather than fear, carefully maintaining the mental walls he had taught her to build. She sat with the feeling for a moment, turning the sensation over in her mind before adding, "It's not forcing anything. It's more like it wants you to relax enough to let it in."

A faint exhale followed the realization.

"Which is probably worse," she admitted. Her eyes opened fully, her focus returning to the world outside herself, though she made sure not to let the mental structures she had built crumble. "So, we don't relax too much."

He gave a nod of his head to her in agreement with that. Relaxing was something that should have given focus and if they couldn't focus it was something that could be more dangerous eventually. THe jedi master moved from where he was sitting though and offered his hand for her to get back up. "Agreed." He was looking into the jungle though as he moved though but had a heading and a plan or the makings of a plan. "We'll stick to the original plan but also watch the river if it goes into where we saw then it could mean we have a way in there in case it is sealed or damaged... or occupied. It might be a means to sneak in and around instead of trying to move around and be exposed."
